NEWPORT-IRVINE ROTARY CLUB SEPTEMBER 27, 2012 Rota flyer Last Meeting Highlights Take a moment to see what you missed and view upcoming events.. Pres. Bob called order 12:30 Ron Hodge made an excellent brief invocation. Since Lou Van Lochem was absent, Bailey Smith led flag salute in his place. Pat Kolstead led the Four Way Test and Jim Parsons (stand-in for Scott) led a wonderful rendition “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” Pres Bob offered a historical Rotary minute about Rotary youth exchange programs. Visting Guests: It was wonderful to see Karen Spilly-Shahinian returning as a guest. She reported that she, husband Henry, and children are all well and prospering. Announcements: Announcements included our member Casey Crandall being up for the district Rotarian business leadership award. A luncheon will be held 11:30am at the DoubleTree Hotel in Orange on October 12. All members are encouraged to attend so that we can honor our brother Casey’s achievement. Oct 16, Chapman University President Jim Dotti will speak at a Pacific Club luncheon. Our member Margaret Richardson has a table and invites members to join her. Call Margaret directly to discuss this further. Pres Bob was pleased to announce a new member induction next week. Sanjay Dalal also reported formation of a new Interact Club at Irvine High School established via his internet connections. TJ Snyder followed on a somewhat more dismal note that invoices will issued for contributions to the club’s foundation. Please pay promptly. President Bob leaves on a two week vacation after the meeting next week. The first week will be a Navy reunion in San Diego, followed by a trip to Montreal to see his son who is working on his PHD at McGill. Fines-“Kinder and gentler” Fine Master, Blanca O’Campo managed to recognize ten members in rapid fashion. PDG John Brainerd was unable to identify the whereabouts of a recently reported 22 foot earthworm (found in South Africa). Singh Sawhney happily reported that he has been playing tennis regularly and had only good news to report. Junius Jaubert reports that he had been working too hard, but somehow managed to sneak away to a R&B concert in Oceanside as well as diner recently at the Bayside Dinner. Tim Shields (as usual) was fined for a ten day second honeymoon in Paris. Congratulations Tim & Beth. Patricia Kolstad should have been fined for blatant advertisement on accomplishments at O’Conner Mortuary. On a lively note, Pat reported that her darling five year old granddaughter is doing well and additional services are being provided for her special needs. Meeting Speaker Thursday, October 4th Jeff Bott: Public Affairs Rep Transport Corridor Agencies Jeff Bott has been a Senior Public Affairs and Community Relations Representative for the Transportation Corridor Agencies for the past 17 years. He is responsible for communicating to the public about the completion of State Route 241, a toll road project that will relieve traffic on the heavily traveled Interstate 5 in southern Orange County and northern San Diego County. Jeff received a B.A. in Communications from Cal State Fullerton and also attended Del Mar Media Arts in Irvine, California. He is a resident of San Clemente and also serves on the board of directors for the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce. He was elected board chairman in 2010. He also serves on the capital campaign committee for the Dorothy Visser Senior Center in San Clemente. Apparently Guy’s garage sales have not been sufficiently lucrative for Ivy League tuitions. Uzo Okereke was pleased to report on his recent visit to Morehouse College to visit his daughter and a visit the previous weekend to see his son at the Air Force Academy. Congratulations Uzo!! Speaker Bill Engle, Master Hypnotist. Presented discussions concerning the amazing “Virtual Lap Band” as well as patients breaking away from alcohol abuse, overcoming public speaking fears and cravings for chocolate, Bill’s presentation was very interesting including his own experience with dental surgery under “hypno amnesia”.
