In 1992, eighteen (18) rotarized members of the Rotary Club of Sampaguita Grace Park of District 3800, led by its reluctantly elected President for Rotary 1993-94 Lita Wells, sought to transfer the club’s territorial service area from Caloocan to a more accessible area. Almost all of the members had offices or resided near Mandaluyong, San Juan or Pasig. The core group, consisting of Lita Wells, Vina Trinidad, Digna Rosales, Virgie Castillo and Fe Lainez remained undaunted even as their search for an area where the club was going to be transferred failed, and even as they had to absorb unnecessary gender-discriminating remarks from some clubs. It was however the suggestion of one member, Lorna Kapunan, to form a new club in another district and Maymay Liechstenstein’s suggestion of District 3810, that chartered the destiny of Rotary Club of Makati Jose P Rizal. Maymay’s husband, Lior, was a member of RC Makati Metro of District 3810. Thanks to the able leadership of Governor Joey Benedicto in District 3810, the strong move of some quarters in District 3800 to block the formation of the first all-woman club in District 3810 became futile. The club finally got their stamp of approval with the Rotary Club of Makati Palanan (now, Rotary Club of Makati Northwest), under President David Lim, as sponsoring club and Mhar Cabahug, as the new club’s DGSR. On January 21, 1993, Rotary International duly signed and approved the Charter of the Rotary Club of Makati Jose P. Rizal. The Charter Presentation and Induction Ceremonies were held on March 14, 1993 at the Illustrado, Intramuros, Manila, with Virgie Castillo as Charter President. Lita Wells, who was perceived by many to assume the Charter Presidency for having played a significant role in the move, gave way to Virgie, as the latter had the longest affiliation with Rotary (as Rotary Ann of a Past President). With a Filipiniana theme, all members donned uniform baro’t saya in various colors. This attire became the first of the club’s many uniforms adopted through the years. The motif gave significance to the club’s name which honors our national hero and the club’s seal which featured Dr. Jose P. Rizal and Maria Clara, as symbols of the Filipino and the Filipina as partners in service in the pursuit of the ideals and object of Rotary.

K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran is CEO and founder of Printcare PLC, a publicly listed printing, packaging, and digital media solutions company. It is arguably the world’s largest supplier of tea bag pack-aging, catering to nearly every major tea brand, with manufacturing facilities in Sri Lanka and India. Print care is the winner of national and international awards of excellence. Ravindran has been a featured speake r a t s e v e r a l i n t e r n a t i o n a l print and pack aging forums. Ravindran also serves on the b o a r d o f several other companies in Sri Lanka and India and charitable trusts, including the MJF (Dilmah) Charitable Foundation. He is the founding president of the Rotary-sponsored Sri Lanka Anti Narcotics Association, the largest such agency in Sri Lanka. During the country’s civil war, Ravindran was involved in the business

community efforts to find peaceful solutions to the conflict and was a featured speaker at the United Nations sponsored peace conference in New York for the Sri Lankan diaspora in 2002. A third generation Rotarian and a member himself since the age of 21,

Immunization Days. Aided by Rotary’s efforts, Sri Lanka reported its last case of polio in 1994. He also chaired the Schools Reawakening project, in which Rotary District 3220 raised more than $12 million to rebuild over 20 tsunami-devastated schools to benefit 14,000 children. He continues to play a role in his club’s project to build a cancer prevention and early detection center in Sri Lanka. Once completed, it will be the only dedicated national facility to offer

comprehensive screening and early detection services. Ravindran is a recipient of The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service, Distinguished Service Award, and Service Award for a Polio-Free World. He and Vanathy have been married since 1975, and they have two children and a recently born grandchild.

Marilyn De Leon Villarosa is the 7th of 11 children of Farmer Pio Villarosa and his wife Consuelo Villarosa. She was raised like any other typical barrio child in the early 60’s, she washed clothes in the river, went to church everyday, reluctantly went to school and sold freshly harvested vegetables at the nearby weekend market on the weekends. She went to Central Elementary School, Granary Co Education Institution for her secondary education and finished her studies at the University of the East with a degree in Secretarial Education. Now that I look back on It, the entrepreneural spirit was very evident even during her early years. here are the things t h a t s h e s o l d “ b u l a k l a k n g calabasa”, banana q, camote q, “scramble”, tocino, longaniza, shirts, herbal soap,yema, gugo shampoo, table cloth, jewellery, fruits, vegetables, shoes, rented out comics, opened a salon, restaurant, drug store, water refilling station and finally opening her own real estate office (most of these businesses are still in operation). even though she had a lot on her plate she is always available when I need her. I was

brought up to be independent and instilled a good work ethic. A s i d e f r o m t h e m a n y acknowledgment given to her throughout the years , it’s her compassion and her willingness to help people are her award winning qualities and would for sure would leave a positive mark during her presidency.

INTRODUCTION OF WCP MARILYN DE LEON VILLAROSA BY: PP HELEN PRATS

It is the number of years you have known a person that counts for a meaningful friendship to blossom. No matter how short a time you have been acquainted, by mere intuition, you would know that a lasting friendship will come out of it.

Marilyn and I have known each other for over a year only but the mutual feeling was like we have been together for decades. The 2 foreign trips we have had together, both related to Rotary events, have further cemented our friendship. Her life story comes as an inspiration for young men and women. Coming from a humble beginning, she is what she is today through hard work, patience and perseverance. Another trait that sets her apart from others is her being very prayerful, giving thanks to the Lord for the littlest things that happen. When we were travelling, each time we arrived on a certain place, no matter how short the distance was, the first thing she would say was “ Thank you, Lord”. So if in a day, we have gone to 10 different places, that is 10 “ Thank Yous” to the Lord. Well, I would say it has rubbed on me that I do the same thing now. This is to give you an idea of her character built over the years.

There is a saying that goes” When much is given, much is expected” Simply put, it means that as you reap in abundance, you must give back voluntarily without expecting anything in return. Most of us here are engaged in businesses and we employ people. This is one way of giving back and sharing our blessings-by giving employment to people. Marilyn has been doing that for a long time as there are about 50 persons under her and her son’s employ. She

confided to me that when she was afflicted with a life threating illness some years back, these are the same people who prayed hard for her to survive.

In the same token , when she was asked to assume the Presidency of our Club this year, she readily took up the challenge even though she did not undergo the complete preparation to become one. What drove her to do it- only one thing I supposed- the desire to do more and give back the abundance she has been showered with. What could be more noble than that. She knew that the Presidency would give her the opportunity to accomplish more and make better the lives of people in the communities we serve. As she always says , ‘ When you work and speak from the heart, you will never go wrong. I won’t be there to complete with anybody, I will be there to serve and gladly do what is expected of me. Awards and applause, though they are bonuses, will be forgotten. Only the felling of having done good will remain”. This, I would say, is the very essence of her character.
