Greetings Rotarians and Friends

It has been another busy week on the Rotary Calendar. The AGM was held on Monday 29th November and I met with President Beverley McFarlane from the RC Fitzroy to discuss the plans for our incoming exchange student from Brazil. Kristen Widdop and her family are very excited about having her to stay with them. As part of this process I have to inspect the Widdop home – bathrooms and all so Kristen will be busy with the Jif!

The Heritage Cluster Clubs support the Rochester district and I have included an email received recently which demonstrates the continuing issues this community faces.

Edited version-

‘Due to demand we are again having our Annual Christmas Shop, here at the Centre on December 2nd. This is where those in need in our communities and our farming families that are still enduring hardship come to select from Christmas hampers, gifts and toys.

With the volume of requests this week, we feel the need to act on this once again! We would be incredibly delighted and appreciative if you would help us to help those in need at this time. We are finding the stress levels and emotional strain amongst our farming families has escalated once again with the intense pressure of locusts and significant water issues, not to mention financial hardship. These issues are impacting on their farming operations and their personal lives and driving the level of request for support from our services. This time of year can be a time of year of happiness and celebration. This is not always the case for the families we are seeing. We seek support to bring some Christmas cheer to our community which is currently in a fragmented and fragile state

Thank you sincerely –

Allannah Jenkins Rural Community Support Officer, Counsellor”

I also attended the Heritage Cluster meeting where it was decided that we would donate $1000 of food vouchers to the RC Rochester for distribution to families who continue to need support in this district. PP Trevor Pang has also arranged the delivery of donated Jag watches.

Edited version of Trevor’s email ‘A Friend of the Rotary Club of Richmond has donated 10 x Ladies JAG Bracelet Watches (average RRP $200 to assist the needy in your farming community. All the very best for the festive season.’

This year the Heritage Cluster Clubs will support the RC Rochester’s “Port n Pie” night which will be held on Friday 6th May 2011 and hope that many of you can make this a weekend away, supporting the district by staying in local accommodation, purchasing food, drinks and goods at local shops. We should endeavor to make this a fellowship weekend for the club and I encourage you to plan ahead.

Until next week –

Jo Cowling President 2010-2011

DECEMBER IS ROTARY INTERNATIONAL FAMILY MONTH Celebrate Rotary’s commitment to family during the month of December particularly. Invite a family member to a Rotary meeting, event or function. Our Club’s Christmas dinner on Monday 20th December would be an ideal occasion to share with your family and friends… and your Richmond Rotary family would love to meet and welcome them too! ☺

VARIETY CLUB CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY Our Special Party Reporter, President Jo Cowling

The Melbourne Christmas Party for Special Children has had its association with Variety - the children's charity - since it's inception in 1995. The Melbourne Party is reputedly to be one of the largest (if not the largest) annual Christmas Party for Special Children in the World today. Sadly there are so many children with special needs and the Variety Club does it’s very best to share the joy around.

Rotarian Barry Roberts, FoRR Sue Roberts and President Jo Cowling volunteered for the Variety Club Children’s Party on Thursday 2nd December.

We attended the Melbourne Convention and Entertainment Centre (Jeff’s Shed) which had been decorated in readiness for the children’s arrival. It was a happy and fun occasion for the children their families and many carers. The children enjoyed the rides, activities, the party food - but best of all was the present from Santa!

Past President Michael O’Sullivan has had a long association with the Variety Club Party and was asking for volunteers to assist this year, which prompted Barry, Sue and I to put up our hands. We had a very rewarding day and I would recommend you consider it next year.

THIS MONDAY’S SPEAKERS CORNER: Meeting 2121, 6th December 2010

Guest Speaker: Kate Archdeacon – Design Research Assistant Topic: Sustainable Melbourne: View from VEIL Chair: PP Trevor Pang

Environmental sustainability has become a common topic of discussion in Melbourne. Pressures and potential shortages around water, energy, living space, transport and food are becoming pressing issues for a rapidly-growing city like Melbourne. Kate Archdeacon is a Design Research Assistant; Communications, at the Victorian Eco-Innovation Lab (VEIL) in the Faculty of Architecture, Melbourne University. She is the moderator for the website ‘Sustainable Melbourne’, which is part of VEIL.

VEIL is funded by Sustainability Victoria to introduce and expand ideas of a possible sustainable future for Melbourne, through engaging with university students, researchers, academics and professionals from Australia and abroad. Kate will present a series of examples of Melbourne-based responses to the pressures of sustainability. She will also feature some of the future visions produced by the university students, providing a context from the research conducted by VEIL over the past four years.

To see more of what VEIL is involved in, Kate suggests we have a look at these websites: www.ecoinnovationlab.com and www.sustainablemelbourne.com and www.sustainablecitiesnet.com

LAST WEEK’S SPEAKER’S CORNER Meeting 2120, Monday 29th November, 2010

Our Guest Speaker: Dr Claire Farrell (University of Melb) Her Topic: Green Roofs The Chair: PP Barry Roberts Reporter: Annie Wysham, Tiger Rag Sub-Editor

What are green roofs? What are the benefits? What about construction and design? Importance of plant selection? All these questions and more were addressed by our well-informed and most personable guest speaker, Dr Claire Farrell, at last weeks meeting. She stated, “Green roofs are landscapes on structures - defined as roofs which support planted vegetation.”

Research into the suitability of Australian native plants for ‘green roofs’ is under way at the University of Melbourne’s Burnley campus – the Burnley experimental roof project. “Green roofs - shallow rooftop gardens - are becoming increasingly popular internationally for their environmental and energy saving benefits.” Dr Claire said, “They have recently been evaluated and trialed by the University of Melbourne’s Green Infrastructure Research Group, Burnley campus team, under Australian climatic conditions.” The suitability of certain native plants researched was measured by their survival, growth rate and response to drought stress. Green roofs have demonstrated benefits. They can reduce run-off of roof water, offer aesthetically pleasing cityscapes, lengthen roof life, significantly reduce building energy use and reduce the urban heat island effect. To set up a ‘green roof’ a waterproof membrane is installed, then a root barrier, a cellular plastic drainage layer then specifically designed lightweight growing media (plants). Plants from arid, mountainous or coastal environments are preferred overseas. In Australia a range of exotic species, including herbs, native grasses and succulents from arid inland regions are ideal. Some Australian species are also being trialed by the University of Melbourne at the Burnley Campus, including grasses that grow in the native grasslands west of Melbourne and succulents from arid inland regions. The research outcomes will be utilised to provide information to architects, landscape designers and public policy-makers who plan to install green roofs suitable for Australian conditions and evaluate the environmental benefits.

“Plants need to be hardy, low to the ground with good drought and sun exposure tolerance,” Dr Farrell told us. Also – they need to be easily maintained and not get blown off the roof - two important considerations! On her recent trip to Australia, US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, accompanied by Prime Minister Julia Gillard, visited the exciting and new Grocon Pixel Building, situated at the corner of Queensberry and Bouverie Streets, Melbourne; the first carbon neutral building and the highest rated Green Star building in Australia. Grocon has developed the Pixel Building as a project that is so environmentally advanced it’s thought there is nothing presently like it in the world. Dr Claire featured overheads of the Pixel Building’s Green Roof, with the first reconstructured grasslands. (See pictured.) The green roof is one of the Pixel’s twelve environmental integrated systems and innovations. Visit the fascinating Pixel Building at: http://www.pixelbuilding.com.au/. Take the time to browse Green Roofs Australia’s photo gallery of green roofs from around the world at: greenroofs.wordpress.com/contact-us/ -

Now I just need my gardening gloves, tools, sheets of plastic, potting mix, plants and a large ladder…and I too can be a puddler on the roof!

AN EARLY WHITE CHRISTMAS IN THE UK! By Annie Wysham, Sub-Editor

These 2 pics were taken by a friend in Sheffield, UK. on the 2nd December last from inside his house. One shot is taken looking out the back door from the kitchen – and there is a six inch step down as well as the depth of snow seen! The other shows his front yard and car snowed under. He wrote that they closed their office for several days, as

did all the businesses around them. 'Barclays Bank and the big pub next door – even much of nearby Meadowhall Shopping Centre'. It appears that this is the worst Sheffield and surrounding areas have been hit 'since either 1947 or 1963'!
