Most Rotarians knew that for several decades, Rotary has operated with four Avenues of Service: namely Club Service, Vocational Service, Community, and International Service. But an unusual thing happened at the 2010 Council on Legislation! The proposed enactment to add a fifth Avenue of Service was approved by the Council after being rejected by the previous Councils. The new avenue is called New Generations Service, and there is some confusion and concern about the impact of the change. The proposer of the enactment did not file a statement of support, and therefore, we do not have a written statement of the proposer's rationale. However, it seems to me that the purpose and effect is to focus more attention on the Rotary programs for youth and young adults.Rotary's programs of Interact, RYLA, Rotaract, and Rotary Youth Exchange are some of the best in the world for young people. However, they have been divided between

Community Service and International Service at the club level and district level, which has made it more difficult for them to be coordinated. The change to five Avenues of Service will provide a single director or coordinator for each club and each district to supervise and promote the Rotary programs for young people. Our work with youth and young adults has two salutary benefits. First, the favorable influence on the participants by their exposure to the core values of Rotary, which are fellowship, service, integrity, diversity and leadership. Second, the positive memory of Rotary that often causes the participants to join Rotary clubs later in their lives. We need to do a better job of recruiting the participants into Rotary membership, and we are working on plans to record the names and e-mail addresses of the participants to stay in touch with them as they leave the youth and young adult programs. So in reality, the 2010 Council on Legislation did not create any new programs. But adding a fifth Avenue of Service will facilitate our quest to make the youth and young adult programs even Bigger, Better, and Bolder in the future - and to recruit even more of the participants into Rotary membership. The perfect example of a win-win situation!

Something old, something new

n organization's visibility enhances its relevance which

further impacts on its credibility. In other words, facts Aunreported do not exist or they rather exist on the fringes

of reality. No matter the quantum of good things one does, once you

are not visible or heard then you are like not existing. Pious folks

may say they do not do good for others to see, but for God alone to

appreciate and reward them, but there is obviously no harm in

letting people know what you do so that others may emulate. Thus

we have more generosity. That is the surest way to eliminate

poverty, and enhance social harmony. It is for this reason that the

Rotary Club of Banjul revives its monthly bulletin, and now

publishes it quarterly. In this bulletin recent activities of the club will

be documented. The bulletin will provide news, and be kept in our

archives for future generations of Rotarians to see what their

forebears did. In this issue, the concept of Rotary is emphasized by

the speeches of Rotary personalities; from a Rotary International

President to the Immediate Past President and the incumbent

President of the Rotary Club of Banjul. The intention is to woo

readers to the ideals of Rotary and win the hearts of more people

for Rotary to increase membership. There are many people out

there living the life of Rotarians who do not belong to Rotary as a

club of good-doers. This is an invitation to such people to embrace

Rotary and join us in our noble efforts to build peace by promoting

friendship and fellowship among people of different races and

backgrounds and to ensure professional integrity in our callings.

All the advertisements you see in the magazine are those of

generous companies who consistently patronize the Rotary Club of

Banjul in its charitable projects. In other words, they help us help

others. We carry their ads in this bulletin, gratis, to tell the whole

world how grateful we are to them.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEEPROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A ROTARIAN

1. Use my professional status to render services.

2. To be faithful to the spirit and the codes of conduct of my profession, the

laws of my country, and the moral rules of the community.

3. Make honour to my profession and promote ethical practices.

4. Be ethical towards my superiors, employees, partners, competitors,

customers, public and the people I meet through my profession.

5. Recognise and respect every professional which is useful to the society.

6. Use my professional skills to help young people in their career, help

people in need, and improve quality of life in my community.

7. Never use false publicity in my professional life.

8. Never look for or give to another Rotarian, favours or advantages that

are abnormal in the business world and professional field.

The Rotary formula is simple. We unite in one common purpose, that of making the world a better place in which to live, and do not concern ourselves with other questions. We recognize the fact that the Creator did not make all men alike. Rotary, therefore, does not attempt to put the minds of its members into a common mold. It would be neither possible nor desirable. We hew close to the line of our one objective. Friendliness and tolerance have been prime essentials in our efforts. Rotary clubs are unique in that their memberships comprise a conglomeration of racial, religious and political faiths. Rotary clubs in India, Egypt, and many other countries have enough different and opposing elements to destroy them if members arrayed themselves against each other, but they do not so array themselves. They respect each other's opinions and are tolerant and friendly at all times. Catholics, Protestants, Mohammedans, Jews, and Buddhists break bread together in Rotary.Rotary is a worldwide fellowship of business and professional men who occupy positions of leadership and influence in the communities and in the countries in which they live. Their combined power is imponderable even in so gigantic an undertaking as that of making this world a better place in which to live.Rotary is a miniature model of a world at peace, one which might advantageously be studied by nations. Rotarians believe that the universal application of tolerance and friendliness would bring about the international peace so earnestly desired by everyone.Paul HarrisROTARY'S FOUNDERBroadcasting to a world at war, 1941

The Rotary FormulaThe Rotary FormulaYour Excellency, Sheikh Prof. Alh. Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh, Assistant Governor, Rotarian Omaoshola Joiner, President Elect, Rotarian Seedy Saho, fellow Rotarians ,ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome to Rotary Club of Banjul's 31st Annual Fundraising Gala Dinner and Dance. Rotary Club of Banjul belongs to Rotary International which has a membership of about 1.3m in more than 33,000 clubs from more than two hundred countries and geographical areas. Rotarians are business and professional women and men united worldwide to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in business and professions, and help build goodwill and peace around the world.

Every year Rotarians initiate interesting projects which reflect the needs of their communities. Rotary Club of Banjul has initiated and completed a number of projects across the country. Our projects include: the provision of ninety-two concrete-lined wells with hand pumps nationwide, (worth 600,000 U.S. Dollars), participation in POLIO immunization campaigns, provision of a 15-seater van for the school of the visually impaired (GOVI), a Mobile Eye Clinic for the Upper River Region, and participation in tree planting activities, just to name a few.

We also did projects in the medical field, namely: providing the Diabetes Unit of the RVTH with equipment worth over 150,000 dalasi, provision of an Autoclave Sterilizing Unit for the Bansang Hospital. A few years ago, we initiated a Modern Science Lab Project for senior secondary schools in the Greater Banjul Area which is now at the finishing point. Thanks to His Excellency, the President of the Republic, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya AJJ Jammeh for his personal intervention by donating one and half million dalasi (D1.5m) to the club as his contribution to the Science Laboratory project. We are very grateful to you. We also thank Trust Bank Gambia Ltd for partnering with us in this science lab project. You contributed one and a quarter million dalasi (D1.25m) to the project. Thank you, Trust Bank.

To everyone here present, we are deeply touched by your patronage of our fundraising Gala Dinner. We appreciate your unrelenting support to the ideals of Rotary Club of Banjul. May I reassure you that all the funds raised here will be used to complete our science lab project which we have been struggling with for the past five years. Even though a huge amount of money (i.e. about five million dalasi) has gone into the project which saw the completion of the building, we still need about one million dalasi to do the finishing touches and furnish it. I would like to mention the generous support of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) for offering to equip the lab with the necessary apparatuses to the tune of one million dalasi. Thank you for your collaboration.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my fellow Rotarians for your tireless effort in making this program a success. You have really shown the true spirit of Rotary. I wish you all a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.

Annual Sponsored Walk

For over two decades, the Rotary Club of Banjul has been offering scholarships to needy and meritorious students in the Gambia at various levels, as part of its education program.Every year members of the club go on a 'Sponsored Walk' to raise funds for this Scholarship Program. Through this activity the club sponsors fifty students, annually. As a friend of Rotary, your contribution to this fund-raising activity will enable a needy and intelligent student to get an education that will give him/her a bright future, and enable them to contribute meaningfully to the development of the Gambia and the world.

To commemorate the centennial anniversary of Rotary in 2005, all Rotary clubs were charged by Rotary International to undertake a major project to 'celebrate Rotary'. The Rotary Club of Banjul, in response to this call, elected to erect and fully equip a laboratories complex for the

teaching of science and technology. The Secondary School Science Laboratories Project was conceived with

the main goal of providing a practical environment for the pursuit of scientific knowledge by secondary school students in the Gambia. This

goal will translate into the following objectives:1. To enhance the capacity of secondary schools in the Greater Banjul

Area to provide quality science education to students;2. To address a major deficiency in the availability of science laboratory

facilities in Gambian secondary schools;3. To support the national education policy in promoting and developing

computer and scientific education in schools;4. To provide a conducive environment for the increasing number of

secondary school students to pursue science and technology education for the realization of the goals of Vision 2020, The Gambia's

development blueprint.

On Friday 29 July 2011, the Rotary Club of Banjul held its Handing Over

ceremony to a new Executive Committee for the new Rotary year July 2011-

July 2012.

The Immediate Past President, Rotarian Safiyoung Manneh, in his Handing

Over speech, thanked his team and all Rotarians in the Banjul club for their

support and cooperation in the delivery of his services as President, most of

which was dedicated to the construction of the Multi-disciplinary Science

laboratory. He also thanked all Rotarians worldwide for sacrificing their time

and money to promote global peace and improve the lives of their

communities.

The new President, Rotarian Seedy Saho thanked his predecessor for

coaching him over the past year when he served as President-elect. He also

thanked his fellow members of the Rotary Club of Banjul for having faith in him to stir the affairs of the noble

organization and promised to live up to expectation. He identified as his priority the completion of the famous

Science Laboratory Project which is almost finished.

The Science Lab is the Centennial Project of the Rotary Club of Banjul. Work on it started in 2005 when

Rotary International clocked 100 years old, and each club was charged to come up with a project of utmost

importance to its immediate community. The Banjul club then thought of a Science laboratory that could be

used on a time-sharing basis by several secondary schools in the Greater Banjul Area. This is in response to

the lack of a state-of-the -art science laboratory in almost all the schools in this area. The provision of one

would therefore be of enormous importance to thousands of science students in the Gambia. When completed

the science lab will be given to the Conference of Principals to be managed for the intended purpose. So far,

about five million dalasis has gone into the civil works of the project, of which D1.5m was donated by His

Excellency the President of the Republic, Sheikh Professor Alh. Dr. Yahya AJJ Jammeh and D1.25m was

donated by Trust Bank Ltd. The rest of the funds were raised through personal contributions of members of

the club and through the sponsorship of many companies who patronized the club's annual gala dinner in

December. The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has also fulfilled its promise to provide the

apparatuses and consumables of the lab to the tune of D1.0m. Such a container has just arrived in time for the

laboratory to be inaugurated soon.

The high point of the event was the presentation of Awards to deserving members of the club. Rotarian Sony

Manly-Rollings won the Award for the most regular and punctual member to attend the weekly meetings. He

is also the only Rotarian coming all the way from Banjul City to the club meetings at Kairaba Hotel in Kololi.

Rotary Club of Banjul Donates Ambulance to Sulayman Junkung Hospital

otary is one of the largest and most influential humanitarian service organizations in the world. As Rvolunteers, Rotarians have been generously serving

the needs of communities around the world since 1905; some one hundred and six years ago. And we will never relent in our quest to serve communities in which we live.Today's occasion is another manifestation of the fulfillment of one of Rotary's objectives, and that is to promote health, by providing YET ANOTHER community an ambulance. This time, the b e n e f i c i a r y community is no other than our dear brothers and sisters, moms and dads of Bwiam. We are of the conviction that this ambulance will be able to serve Bwiam and i t s s a t e l l i t e v i l l a g e s immensely, by improving access to the hospital and saving lives. On behalf of members of the Rotary Club of Banjul, and indeed the Gambia Future Fund in the Netherlands who facilitated the acquisition of the ambulance,I now have the pleasure to call the Alkalo (Mayor) of Bwiam to receive the key on behalf of the Sulayman Junkung Hospital. Thank you.
