Volume 59, No. 14 5 October 2017
Meets Thursdays at 6pm for 6.30pm at the Foundry Hotel High Street Golden Square.
Rotary – Making a Difference
President’s update Club meeting 5 October 2017 We had a good roll up to be entertained by our in house guest speakers this week, marshaled by Chairman Peter Simmons. We were joined by regular guests Megan McKenna and Tom Campbell from RC Bendigo Next Generation. Always great to have the next generation of Rotary leaders along. YE student Victor set a cracking pace with his entertaining stories about his experiences, including sheep wrangling; playing (and losing miserably) school AFL football (and his infamous push in the back in front of goal); watching AFL football at the MCG with Gary, and locally with his mate who plays for Golden Square; playing real football (soccer) and winning regularly; escorting Finnish YE student Anna to the school formal; turning snags with Gary; taking the train to Melbourne to see the sights; and attending the Melbourne Show and Elmore Field Days. Victor is absolutely getting maximum value out of his exchange, and enriching our club along the way. Glenn and Ian had a hard act to follow, but rose to the occasion and gave a pictorial run down on their recent travel experiences. Glenn played on a cricket tour with an Australian team of Fellowship of Cricket Playing Rotarians in the UK. They padded up in Edinburgh, Inverness and York, and saw lots of sights along the way, while enjoying the hospitality of local Rotarians. Unfortunately Glenn forgot about the passage of the years, and did some serious mischief to his arm while playing like the young Glenn used to. He had significant surgery on his return home to patch up the arm, and will be wearing his bionic arm aid during the recovery period. Ian enjoyed a family visit to the UK and beyond. He took us to London, including his visit to the Rotary Club of Kennington, the pub where he used to work, the Beatles start up venue the Cavern Club, and an insider’s view of Buckingham Palace; then on to Oxford, Edinburgh, Bath, Ireland, Cornwall where he searched out his ancestors, and a snow skiing venue in Dubai of all places. If you missed the meeting, don’t forget you can catch all the video action on our Facebook page.

Tony updated us on Conference attendance and accommodation planning, Anne promoted the Every Rotarian Every Year aid of $2 coin tubes, and Heather got the ball rolling on the sale of raffle tickets to support RC Bendigo Strathdale Xmas trailer raffle. The tall poppy and Foundry voucher recipient this week is Clive Hughes, videographer extraordinaire, who is doing a great job implementing our digital connection innovation project. Thanks Clive. We also acknowledged the great support we get from our Foundry host Siobhan every week managing our catering and IT, and showing great flexibility in adapting to our changing needs. Board report Issues and decisions from our October Board meeting:
I asked Megan and Tom to give us an impromptu update at the start of our meeting on the RC Bendigo Next Generation club renewal project, which was followed by an exchange of ideas with our Board members.
We are continuing our investigations into development of a club storage facility.
We will support an initiative Anne brought to the Board to provide donated support packs to Annie North Echuca for women fleeing family violence.
We acknowledged Elizabeth’s participation in the Rotary leadership program.
We received an update to the business plan from Glenn covering the Youth Service budget and revenue sources.
We agreed on some revisions to our child protection policy to reflect updated advice received from D9800 at the briefing requested by the swap meet committee.
Rod reported on the Welsh Choir concert outcome, and next steps, including an evaluation.
Greg Noonan will resume Treasurer duties on 22 October, and Rod will then return to the Club Service Director role. Thanks to Rod for taking on the Acting Treasurer role again, and Anne for acting as Club Service Director. Thanks also to International Service Deputy Director Heather Nixon for standing in for Lindsay when required.
Other news [Note: No club meeting this week] The Lift the Lid (on mental illness) Hat Day Party supporting Australian Rotary Health scheduled for this week Thursday 12 October has been cancelled, as we could not muster sufficient numbers to sustain the planned event. There will be no club meeting this week 12 October. However this provides a great opportunity for members to either arrange a committee or project meeting, or to visit another club in the cluster (see their meeting details on the back page). Note that instead of their usual meetings this week, RC Bendigo and RC Bendigo Strathdale are holding their World’s Greatest Meal to support End Polio Now. It is at 6pm for 6.30pm Tuesday 10 October at the Bendigo Club, and is a partners night. I will be there. If you plan to attend, you will need to notify Glenn Reilly (0400 887 230, [email protected]) by Monday evening at the latest. The cluster Presidents met on Sunday at the RC Eaglehawk rooms. We had a valuable exchange of ideas on what is working well, and options for addressing challenges, including the new child welfare legislation, and funding club administration. We also received a presentation from the Polio Network Victoria on their annual Victorian forum which will be held in Bendigo this year.
