THE PRESIDENTIAL CROSS CHAT

For those members who missed last weeks’ meeting the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek

Board was very pleased to announce that Bev Baker PHF PP had agreed to accept the

position of President Elect for the year 2012 / 2013. As there were no other nominations

the Board had no hesitation in ratifying Bev Baker to this position. This position also

includes Club Administration. Welcome to the Board Bev and we all look forward to your

year as President in 2013 / 2014.

Of course this now leads me to my next point.

Bev will not be able to carry out her present duties as Public Relations Director, Family of

Rotary, Program / weekly roster and On to Conference. Bev is happy to keep On to

Conference but needs people to take over:

Bev has indicated to me that she will be more than happy to assist with a smooth

transition and ensure that the new office bearers are not left floundering. Please think

very carefully about these positions as I cannot emphasise enough how important they

are, particularly Public Relations.

What else happened last week? Well – it was Club Assembly where we basically tell you the

members what we the Board have been up to. Probably the most keenly waited for

announcement was our annual subscriptions and by now you would have received an

electronic invoice from our esteemed Treasurer Greg Adams. I can hear most of saying

there must be some mistake; it is the same as last year. No mistake – it is the same as last

year. The Board agreed that with much number crunching, pencil sharpening, belt

tightening and ….. I can’t think of any more metaphors, we would do our bit in the fight

against the GFC and shrinking superannuation and hold our subs. Enjoy the respite

whilst you can.

The weekend saw a hardy few of our members brave the elements and provide a BBQ for

the even hardier fewer volunteers at the National Tree Planting Day working bee at

Yarrambat Park. It was good to chat to the Nillumbik Shire workers and mayor who

greatly appreciated our presence and more significantly the hot snags and burgers. Great

effort and thanks to Arthur, Alan W, Bev and John. Check out the photos. Great example

of Rotary at work in our community.

GUEST SPEAKER—SHERIDAN MORRIS

Sheridan Morris takes her comedy very seriously, usually

with a cup of strong tea and some chocolate!

As a professional speaker, she found she could successfully broach sensitive and confronting

topics by using humour. This led her to take up studies in humour techniques and formulas at

P Pete Crofts Humourversity in Melbourne.

Sheridan stepped onto the Stand Up Comedy stage for the first time in November 2001 then

launched into a one-woman show in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival the following year!

Some say she was courageous taking such a bold step. She says it was more like a stumble and thinks

foolish may a better adjective! The show was a great success and she went on to perform in the Festival

the following two years as a member of successful comedy teams.

Tonight's presentation will be very much about communication and will address issues such as business

publications and publicity or inter-personal communication skills. Anecdotal material is drawn from

Sheridan’s professional experience as well as sound research and personal experience as a voluntary

worker, wife and parent. Please welcome Sheridan Morris.

Sergeant: Roger Knight extorted club members Using various dubious stories and distorted information. Club Assembly: President Steve announced that the incoming president elect is Bev Baker for 2013/2014. Bevs current roles need to be shared around club members. Please approach Bev and offer to take on some of her workload, Bev will be asking people to take on some of these roles and please offer. Next sunday is the Yarrambat Park tree planting day. Linda Gidlund: (foundation). Our district directory pg 45 gives an outline of foundation projects. November is foundation month. Celebration date for foundation is November 20th and this date is planned to include counting the 5cent cups at Bendigo bank, followed by dinner at Nandos. Linda is asking for other special events and activities that we want for foundation during the year. Some projects we may include include Goroka. Current foundation team members Greg Adams, Geoff Swann and Rod Mackenzie (phf context). We need to understand that foundation money comes back to our district after 3 years (gse/youth exchange & district grant). Rob Lloyd: Reminded us that the NZ trip is happening for us on sep 22nd. Rob is planning a BBQ on sat evening. Rob is assuming that they will want to spend time in Melbourne. We are looking for another host family - please talk to Rob. Conference is moving along. The exec team will be going to Ballarat in the next couple of weeks. Club members to pay for accommodation only. Bev has reserved 20 rooms at the Mercure in Ballarat. All members to please book. Email to come around with booking details this week. We need everyone to attend for all of the conference to assist as this will be a busy time. Any possible speakers - please let Rob know ASAP. Rod MacKenzie: Town fair 8th of September. Rod is working on sponsorship. All members of the club need to be involved on the day. All jobs will have job descriptions, the briefing will be the week before. Please let Rod know if there is anything hey want raised at the safety briefing. There are a few changes - inc show jumping....rabbits! President Steve acknowledged the effort that Rod puts in leading the town fair committee. Geoff Swan (social sec) planned events are:

17th November dinner cruise,

9th December Christmas party in Eltham Lower park 9th December families can come and enjoy Santa, mini train etc.

16th February progressive dinner at Lloyds, Adams, Swans. 4th & 5th May Mystery weekend.

Board meeting summary

Treasurers report: General admin ran over last year, annual subscriptions set at $220 again this year - same as last year. Club roles and directory will be coming out soon. Membership: Welcome to dc letter will be going out to PO boxes in Yarrambat and Hurstbridge, also some morning breakfasts to encourage a few people to come and meet Rotarians. Vocation and new generations. Jacqui has put together a program and we will ask for a run down next week. Next year we will have an outbound exchange student - District interviews are coming up soon. NYSF interviews have been held and we have a nominee going to district interviews.

RDU: Well done to Bev for getting us into RDU this month.

REPORT ON THE NATIONAL BOWEL SCAN PROJECT JUNE 2012

DISTRICT 9790 MELBOURNE METROPOLITAN AREA

With the guidance and assistance of Ian Coleman from District 9810, we have formed a group to

cover the Melbourne Metropolitan area with co-ordinators in District 9780 – Max Fry, District 9790 –

Alan White, District 9800 – Bryan Goodwin, Kevin Walsh, District 9810- Ian Coleman and District 9820

– Trevor Bew.

Kits are ordered through Helena Laboratories at Mount Waverley and payment for the kits and a

fee towards costs are made to the National Bowel Scan Committee in New South Wales.

Within the Melbourne metropolitan area, kits are delivered to the Rotary Club of Eltham for

distribution to Thompsons Amcal Pharmacy and Frosts Pharmacy and co-ordinator Alan White has

delivered direct to other pharmacies. The Rotary Club of Kinglake distributed in 2012 as well.

2012 has been the most successful year so far for District 9790. The kit is a simple way to ascertain if

there is occult blood in the stool. Purchasers of the kits are advised if their results are negative or

positive. Where there is a positive sample the purchaser’s doctor is also advised so that further tests

can be undertaken. Bowel cancer, when caught early, is completely curable by surgery – without

the need for chemotherapy.

What’s one thing most people would be surprised to know about you?

I have a pathological fear of sharks and confined spaces. That’s why I keep SCUBA diving to remind myself of those fears. It works!!!

What’s the smartest thing you’ve been told?

Have a go! Copped a hiding a couple of times but generally came out the other end in one piece.

How would someone you love describe you? Hardworking and caring but pig headed and stubborn.

What’s the oldest item in your wardrobe that you still wear?

A leather bomber jacket that’s older than our girls. Can’t part with it even though it has shrunk a little

What do you look or feel really good in?

A nicely made suit with quality shirt, ridiculous (Collingwood) tie and cuff links.

What’s one simple thing you’re really good at? Burning meat on a BBQ.

What do you least like to do? Clean windows and paint.

What’s the one talent you wish you had?

Sing in tune – Lexie will tell you that I sing in the key of B# and it sounds B awful.

One thing you refuse to eat? Brains

You would you like to invite to a dinner party ?

Jon Faine from 3LO and then sit back and enjoy the discussions.

I’m glad I .... Married, had 2 beautiful daughters who have given us 4.5 fantastic grand kids.

What was your best break in life?

Joining the RAAF which has led me via numerous pathways to where I am now. Whist in the RAAF and serving in South Vietnam I was wounded which resulted in a broken leg. “Them’s the breaks”.

What was your happiest birthday party? 50th. Got to drink 2 bottles of Penfolds Grange!!!!

Best holiday destination (or place you wish to visit)...........Individually – Micronesia. With Lexie – Europe.

Who’s your most memorable character?

Biggles. Loved those stories even though today they may be seen as “politically incorrect”.

Currently, you are reading what ?

If you were an animal what would you be ? Shark – most probably a Pacific White Tip. Beautiful creature that moves with effortless grace and eats any thing!!!
