Donna Rowe Nurse in Vietnam War

Donna entered the U.S. Army in 1964 through the Student Nurse Corps Program (ROTC). She was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in February of 1966 attending basic training at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. Her assignments included: • Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam

Houston, TX • Womack Army Hospital, Fort Bragg, N.C. • DeWitt Army Hospital, Fort Belvoir, VA with

attachment to Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, D.C.

• Vietnam: 3rd Field Hospital, Saigon (Head Nurse, Emergency Room/Triage Area), 1968-1969

Donna was promoted to Captain in June of1968 and received the Vietnam Service Ribbon and the Army Commendation Medal. She was honorably discharged in June of 1969.

Donna married Colonel (Retired) Al Rowe in April of 1967. They have two sons, Richard and John. Donna served as a Red Cross Nurse from 1969-1999 (Served at Womack Army Hospital, DeWitt Army Hospital and South Eastern Disaster Response Center) and was an R.N. Volunteer for Georgia Homeland Security in the GA Nurse Alert System from 2001-2009. She has served her community in many organizations. Donna has recently been featured in “The Kathleen Story” segment of the World Film Festival’s award winning Vietnam War documentary film, In the Shadow of the Blade, which was released on Veterans Day 2004 and can still be seen on the “Military Channel” and the “Discovery Channel”. “The Kathleen Story” segment of this film has been selected by The Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. to run during the permanent display on the Vietnam War in their American History Museum. Donna attended the VIP Festivities at the Ronald Reagan Library for the premiere of the film. It was selected by The Ronald Reagan Library Board to be the Keynote Event for the Library’s Veterans’ Day Celebration.

Annual Programs Fund The Annual Programs Fund is the primary source of unrestricted support for the programs of the Rotary Foundation. It funds programs in more than 160 countries on seven continents. From digging clean water wells for villages in Africa to teaching basic literacy skill to children in Latin America, during any given moment in a day, thousands of Rotarians volunteer their time and expertise ensure that all contributions given to The Annual Programs Fund are spent wisely on quality Rotary projects.

Matching Grants Rotary Clubs in Wisconsin, USA created the Power Flour Action Network to make an impact on the lives of infants and severely malnourished children and adults. Power Flour has targeted malnourished populations in 65 countries to date, providing a very small amount of barley malt flour to cooked starchy staples, such as rice, wheat or maize. The supplement helps digest the starch, converting it into sugars the body can absorb quickly and easily. The sugars power the body so that it can grow and function. A Matching Grant from The Rotary Foundation has enabled Rotarians in Wisconsin to bring Power Flour to children in orphanages and feeding programs in Panama. Rotarians in the Rotary del Norte club in Panama will carry out the distribution and training in Panama to reach up to 10,000 children in the first year. Members of the Sturgeon Bay, WI, USA club are now working to develop a commercial model for PowerFlour.

World Peace Fellows Izabela Pereira, a 2007 graduate of the Rotary Center for International Studies at Universidad del Salvador in Argentina, helped monitor Nicaragua’s recent election as part of an Organization of American States (OAS) mission to the country. Izabela says her experience as a Rotary World Peace Fellow and an OAS observer gave her a firsthand understanding of how democracy is being promoted and strengthened in Nicaragua. She has also conducted fieldwork in Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire for the United Nations Development Fund for Women. Izabela is one of hundreds of Rotary World Peace Fellows who have received the training and field experience necessary to work for lasting peace and stability throughout the world.

Bridging the Worlds Needs

During the rainy season in Ethiopia many rural communities are isolated by fast flowing flooded rivers that separate them from vital aspects of life. With support from a Rotary Foundation Matching grant eight foot bridges were built to alleviate these villages isolation. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and the Rotary Club of Gloucester, Virginia, USA these bridges will improve the living conditions of local communities and provide them with access to life’s daily needs. So even during the rainy season in Ethiopia, Rotarians will know that through contributions to The Rotary Foundation they helped provide a bridge out of isolation for these eight communities.

Mark Johnson introduced guests and visiting Rotarians while conducting the GRSP raffle. He also presented a bio on himself to the club.

Kim Gresh announced the perfect attendance members for the quarter.

Larry Landes won a gift certificate to the West Cobb Diner in the GRSP raffle.

Past President Mike White announced that matching funds are available for those who wish to donate to the Rotary Foundation.

Past President Robert Donovan announced that the holiday party would be on December 9th at the home of Kim Gresh.

Gordy Nichols announced an Interact Fun Day to be held at the North Fulton YMCA on November 12th.

Sandy Woltering announced that Cobb Diaper Day resulted in 60,000 donated diapers, 3,000 from Marietta Metro.

Past President Sally Platt announced that the club received a $6,000 district grant which will assist the Center for Children and Young Adults.

Daryle Higginbotham gave sunshine for the great lunch at the Mansour Center.

Johnny Fulmer gave sunshine for the excellent decorating at the Mansour Center.
