Stress Stress is a normal part of life. It is an important evolutionary force which induces organisms to adapt.

We can thus accept that stress is part and parcel of everyday life and that we usually adequately cope with this stress, but when it is of such a degree that it becomes pathological(causing disease), then it reaches levels above which we can cope. The sources of stress are many fold and are too many to list, but basically, anything that causes one to become anxious is known as a stress trigger. These triggers do not affect us all the same way and that is why certain things bother some people and not others.

We are all familiar with the classical picture of the patient lying on a couch divulging all to his/her psychiatrist or psychologist. This is one method of handling the stresses of life. Medication is another form of treatment but the results are -just like most forms of therapy- never 100% effective.

So how do we handle stress if it becomes pathological?

If I had the magic bullet, I am sure I would be a wealthy man, but there is no magic bullet. What one person responds to does nothing for the next, with the result that there are a myriad of treatment/therapies available, ranging from folklore to scientifically based therapies or treatments.

The trick is in prevention. Ask ourselves, “What causes me to become stressed?” We will all have a different answer and the trick is to try and prevent that trigger from arising and causing stress in the first place. If you know something will bother you, don’t go there if possible.

I have found over the years that the things that stress me the most, are anticipatory. What will I do if this or that happens? I tended to mull over the anticipated predicament only to find that more often than not, that the situation or trigger never occurred in the first place. All that worrying for nothing!

I know try and take life as is comes and do the worrying once it happens. This has decreased my stress levels enormously.

Dragon Boats! We once again sponsored two boats in the Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope’s annual Dragon Boat Regatta. Here are some pics.
