Seventies Club Draw. The winners were as follows: i. Third prize – Rod Kestle - $50; ii. Second prize – Paul Jenner - $100; iii. First prize – Diane McCrae - $150.

The main draw for the Seventies Club will be held on changeover night on 1 July.

Notice from Bruce Murdoch Bruce advised that so far the club members had contributed $817 via Rotary Boxes donations for Polio Plus. Bruce needs all donations by Friday 7 June 2019. As members will be aware, Ian Devereux has offered to match each dollar donated with a further $4. Members are asked to liaise directly with Bruce about this. Five Minute Speakers Lua and Hilo reported on their experience at the RYLA week this year. Lua is a Samoan young woman whose parents came to New Zealand to give her and her sibliings the opportunity of a better life. Hilo is of Tongan and Maori descent. They were both very enthusiastic about their experience.

They gave a visual presentation with commentary. They saw the purpose of the week for themselves as providing an opportunity to:

• Gain more confidence in themselves; • Find out their strengths; • Get pushed out of their comfort zone;

and • Gain new friends.

The presentation gave detailed accounts of their individual experiences and their conclusions were that each of them:

• Had a lifetime experience which had both physical and mental challenges;

• Want to see more Maori and Pacific Island people participating in the week;

• Was motivated to attain further personal goals; and

• They both developed an increased confidence in their own abilities. Courageous Leadership – Presentation by Iain McCrae Iain reported on a Worldwide Webinar in which he had participated with other Rotary members around the world. The two major concerns were the decline in membership and the demography of most clubs, i.e. more older members. The most glaring local example is the fact that our district 9910 will need to amalgamate with the adjoining district 9120 because of a fall in membership. Situational leadership – one of the conclusions was that the Rotary organisation worldwide needed to consider a team approach to everything they engaged in rather than an hierarchical structure as now.

The outcome of a poll that was conducted during the course of the webinar on attendees’ views about the current state of Rotary showed the following.

o 24% considered there was a loss of enthusiasm in current members; o 21% considered there was a lack of commitment on the part of some members; o 16% considered that it was difficult to get people to step forward to do things, whether existing

members or new prospects; o 16% thought that no change was necessary.

The overall outcome was that Rotary needed a different model to use in the future. The conclusions were as follows, with the first question being, “Is our club sustainable with its current membership?”

o There is a need to attract new younger members. o We must engender enthusiasm amongst existing members. o Total involvement from members to be encouraged. o Existing members need to be willing to accept change. o We should start by asking what talents we have in our club and build on them.

Some suggestions made by Iain were as follows: We could start an Interact Club in association with Onehunga High School and PASS school either individually or on a joint basis. This is aimed at young people in the 12-18 year bracket. We could encourage the establishment of a Rotoract Club which is aimed at the 18-30 age group. We revisit starting a satellite club for other people who do not have sufficient time to take part in traditional club activities. Iain’s address was followed by a particularly lively and useful discussion broadly spread across the members present. The emerging consensus was that while the club was doing well it needed to continue to look at ways of changing to adapt for the future. The session ended with a thank you from Fatu Enari who led a beautiful short song of thanks in Samoan from himself and the RYLA attendees.
