Fund Raising for BC Children Hospital

by P.K. Chan

Raymond Li and Cecilia Liu from the Charity Fund of the Children Hospital called on Rotarians to

open their wallets for good causes.

Before Raymond Li made his presentation on May 29, 2007 about the history of the Children

Hospital Charity Fund, it was probably unbeknown to most of us that our hospital health system

has no budget for researches and developments. Researchers have been funded by donations,

results of the effort of many donors and volunteers working for the good causes.

The Hospital's objective is to bring more smiles to children. Cecilia Liu gave a first hand experience on how the

Hospital helped her stay together with her loving daughter, Cameron, for eighteen months. The time might be too

short for most people, but for Cameron, who suffered from the "Bubble Boy" desease, and Cecilia, they are very

thankful for the effort of the staff of the Children Hospital. Average life of a "Bubble Boy" is a year.

R.I. Presidential Citation

by Li, Quentin

"There is nothing intangible about Rotary: It is reality itself. To give is to receive; to

lose one self is to find one self; to be happy is to serve. These are old truths. . . for

the individual. . . and the mass, whether application be in the exchange of goods,

toil, knowledge, or love." - The Meaning of Rotary, THE ROTARIAN, November 1921

Effective Communication

by P.K. Chan

To be effective, you need to understand yourselves, and your audience.

Rtn. Gloria Tom Wing Staudt, president of Rotary Club of Burnaby Metrotown, spoke on her coaching experience and gave some useful advices on effective communication to the Club on May 15, 2007 .

True to yourself, respect others, don't be afraid to ask questions or paraphrase, avoid making judgment on other people - these are a few good tips to understanding others and making yourself understood. People have different values, styles and personalities. Focus on motivators, and find out the truth behind the scene.

An Evening with Kenneth Hsieh, Assistant Conductor, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra

by P.K. Chan

If you think artists are either dull or cool, try to meet Kenneth Hsieh and let him change your

opinion.

Not in a concert hall or in a theatre, our encounter

with Kenneth Hsieh on May 8, 2007 took place in

the usual hotel meeting room. But his presentation

brought a lot of luster and liveliness to those present. Young and

confident, his speech flowed smoothly and waltzed through his

childhood and the pursuit for music at UBC and Japan.

He believed his job as Assistant Conductor at VSO is to relay his

understanding and passion for music to people. Effective

communication requires a lot of skills and compromise. This is

something he really likes and excels.

Kenneth Hsieh's last performance with the VSO will be in July, after

which he will be taking on new responsibilities in Japan.

We all wish him well.

Results from the R.I. 2007 Council on Legislation

by Li, Quentin

The democratic process shaped the 2007 Council on Legislation in Chicago, which ran from 23 to

27 April. Overall, the Council had a busy week, addressing some 337 items that were brought

forward by delegates coming from throughout Rotary's 530 districts worldwide.

Preliminary report of official results of the 2007 Council on Legislation. Enacted items take effect 1 July 2007. Here are

a few of the adapted items. For complete listing, please visit RI newsroom.

To provide for a club board to cancel a club meeting for commonly recognized holidays

To require members to attend 50% of regular meetings in each half of the Rotary year.

To amend the provisions for calculating attendance records>

To consult with the governor when amending the name and locality of the club.

To amend the provisions for visiting Rotarians.

To exempt recent Rotaractors from paying an admission fee.

To provide that the president shall continue to serve until a successor who has attended the presidents-elect

training seminar and district assembly has been elected.

To request the RI Board to consider emphasizing the qualifications for membership.

 Dues increase

In a move that will impact all Rotary clubs, the 2007 Council on Legislation passed an enactment to increase

per capita dues beginning in 2008-09, with the increase going into effect July 2008. The enactment (07-283),

proposed by the RI Board of Directors, effectively raises dues Rotary club members pay US$1 per year through

2010-11.

The enactment pertains to Article 17.030 of the Bylaws of Rotary International, and maintains dues at $23.50

per half year in 2007-08, increases to $24.00 per half year in 2008-2009, $24.50 per half year in 2009-10, and

$25.00 per half year in 2010-11.
