NEW BERWYN PRISON - VISIT ON 1ST DECEMBERThanks to the Rotary Club of Erddig, Rotarians from the 4, Wrexham Rotary clubs at-tended a fascinating presentation at the new Berwyn prison during the evening of 1st December. Berwyn Prison is located in the Wrexham Industrial Estate on the old Fire-stone Tyre factory site. It will accommodate 2000 men and there will be 1000 staff - probably making it the the largest prison in Europe. It will open in stages during 2017. Bersham is designed as a Category C Prison for the more docile type of inmate. The strong emphasis will be on rehabilitation with rooms not cells ! Every prisoner will be given a laptop and a phone within a secure network. There will be 1 member of staff for every 2 prisoners, - ‘prisoner' is a banned term however. All the staff are being specially trained to the enlightened ethos of this newer type of custodial establish-ment. It will bring large economic benefits and publicly available facilities to the peo-ple of Wrexham and surrounding areas. These include meeting rooms, bookable for local voluntary organisations. A gourmet restaurant ‘ The Clink ‘ will be open to the public.

ATTENDANCE APOLOGIES LUNCH NUMBERSThe higher quality of our £10 lunches has been maintained in recent months and the Ra-mada Hotel must be encouraged to continue to look after us well. On our part, we must do all we can to treat the Ramada fairly, providing them with accurate numbers of lunches required. Should we order too many, that is very unhelpful to the the hotel man-agement and the chef. Our policy with regard to making apologies has been clearly set out in our Annual Club Handbook for a very long time.

AGAINST MALARIA FOUNDATIONDuring the Tuesday lunchtime meeting on 11th October, a prearranged telephone call was made to enable Rob Mather, CEO of the Against Malaria Foundation which is based in London, to thank us for the £1000 donation we have made for their cause. Vice President Pene Coles used her computer to display slides of the tremendous work being done in various parts of sub-Sahara Africa by the charity and Rob Mather gave a commentary over the phone. Fortu-nately, the sound was loud enough for all to hear. Our dona-tion will buy thousands of mosquito nets which will help save multitudes of lives - more than 1,000,000 youngsters die from Malaria there every year. President Tony Burdge thanked Mr Mather for his excellent presentation which was carried out in spite of gremlins in the communications.
