Club Service This club has had a wonderful year. We are a small club and all members take part in all areas of club business. To ensure that we have speakers for our club meetings, we have assigned 2 club members per month to schedule speakers and find a location for our monthly pau hana meeting. This has brought our club members closer together and fostered teamwork. Our club members are always good about reaching out to members if they have missed a meeting or two to check in on them. Throughout the year we targeted to have one service project a month. In July we wrote and sent thank you cards to soldier serving in Afghanistan. We know that the letters the soldiers received from us brought them comfort. Another service project that we have committed to 6 times a year is working with the USS Missouri. We have invited other Rotary clubs and members to join us, as well as other service organizations. The record number of people we had while volunteering at the USS Missouri was 50+. In August we collect school supplies at Walmart and donated them to Kalihi Elementary School. During this half day at Walmart we truly experienced the Aloha spirit through the 6 carts of school supplies that was gathered. Some donors came out with bags full of supplies to donate. The donations that touched our clubs heart the most was the donation from the single mother who was from the Marshal Islands. She and her 2 year old daughter both donated 2 small boxes of crayons. It was the many little donations like this from many that accumulated the 6 carts of school supplies. In October the club participated in Child and Youth day as well as collected household and HI-5 items for the Kidney Foundation. In November about 25% or our club members plus other visiting Rotarians drove to Waianae and together helped a local business man and his family plate over 1000 Thanksgiving meals to be delivered to the homeless living along the Waianae Coast. This was one of the best service projects that our club participated in all year. In December we have our annual Holiday Party in conjunction with collecting toys for Toys for Tots. In January we as a club sponsored a little boy named Alison from Save the Children. We will be able to communicate with him as he reaches adulthood. The money we are donating will allow him to get an education as well as receive encouragements from his adopted family in the United States. We also helped Central Middle School with their annual work day. We together with the students and faculty worked together to beautify the school. In February we participated in DECA judging as well as selecting a student to participate in the Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation Scholarship.

ROTARY DISTRICT 5000, Hawaii Awards Submissions Form 2014-2015

Submission Deadline: 20 April 2015 Narrative for Club Service Award for the Rotary Club of The Rotary Club has been involved in Service in the following ways:

• Our relationship with Schofield Barracks. We sent representatives to the July 4 reception and celebration with the base commander, we sent representatives to the Change of Command ceremony on January 8, 2015; we had two representatives at the community lunch at Dot’s on January 28 during the “Keep Our Heroes Home” campaign when military officers were in Hawaii to evaluate whether to close or downsize military bases; we partnered with Mililani Sunrise to get signatures on the petition for “Keep Our Heroes Home”

• We have been involved in the Wahiawa Community by participating in the Veterans’s Day Parade on November 11, which is also a joint activity with Mililani Sunrise; we are participating in the Wahiawa Pineapple Festival on May 9 with a Rotary Information Booth; two of our programs in the fall of 2014 was to show the program “Family Ingredients” produced in Hawaii that featured Wahiawa as well as chef Alan Wong, who grew up in Wahiawa, and several Wahiawa businesses (Peterson Egg Farm and Honda Tofu), and we included egg-rice on the lunch menue, which was one of the dishes featured in the program.

• We have intentionally included local businesses in our programs. • We continue to hold the Al Wonder Christmas Party for clients and care takers at the ARC (a

program for low functioning adults) in Wahiawa. This year we hosted 50 persons, gave each of the clients a personal Christmas present they had requested, gave the program a Christmas present, sang Christmas Carols, and each person received a handmade Christmas lei, by Jane Lawton and her friends at Mililani Sunrise, of bells and Christmas ornaments.

• The students at Hoala School (a private school for grades 1 – 8) came for a program by Captain Bob Perkins, Captain of the Hikianalia, about the current round the world peace trip by the Hawaiian voyaging canoes.

• We participated in Rotary at Work day on April 18, teaming with the Environmental Club at Mililani High School in cleaning up the Ali’I Beach Park in Haleiwa; we also participated with them on a clean up day at Kaena Point.

• Rotary Days include a Train Dedication for a new locomotive and tender at Dole Plantation on December 22, 2014.

• Membership Strategy: This is directly from our Membership Chairperson Alex Kanamu, who has many community friends and business contacts. He would share Rotary with his friends, and when one was interested or seemed a good prospect, he would invite them to lunch, several times, and continue talking to them, eventually inviting them to join Rotary. He would concentrate on one person at a time. All of our new members have joined in response to Alex’s invitation.

• Literacy: The Rotary Club serves a large geographic area, and we give the Rotary dictionaries to over 1,000 students at 13 different schools. It is a huge project for a small club, but the members are dedicated to supporting the students in their education.

All these activities have both built a strong sense of fellowship and dedication to Rotary, and have increased our knowledge of the Wahiawa community. Respectfully Submitted,

President

ROTARY CLUB OF

Club Service:

The Rotary Club of is a small (25 person) club, but is very active in community and educational activities along the Leeward Cast of O’ahu. We have worked toward our annual plan to increase membership, to support international projects and to provide funds for scholarships for youth graduating from leeward schools. In addition, we have partnered with the other nearby Rotary Clubs (Waianae, Rotary Sunset and West Pearl Harbor) to conduct activities jointly and to provide mutual support.

Our membership at beginning of this year stood at 22. We have inducted four new members, but tragically, lost Malia Schwartz to cancer in March.

Our most recent fun-raiser was our very successful golf tourney, conducted this past Thursday, April 16, at the Hawaii Prince Golf Course. At the dinner that evening, we awarded scholarships to two Kapolei students who had applied for and qualified for HRYF scholarships, but for whom HRYF funds were not available. Each student received a $1000 scholarship. We reserved some funds for club purposes, such as support for the U.S. Vets, but the preponderance of the profit, which should be around $10,000, will be used for scholarships in the coming months.

Our very successful Mini-RYLA, conducted at Camp Timberline, involved our members and delegations from the other Leeward Coast clubs. We brought students from the Interact Clubs from four area high schools together for a two-day leadership and public service activity. In addition, we spearheaded the move of the District 5000 Interact Conference to Kapolei High School, and provided logistics support for this multi-club activity.

We have had great success in community activities that support education. We provided dictionaries to 100% of the third-grade students in our area schools, participate in weekly Read-to-Me programs, adult literacy programs, and numerous community activities.

Our guest speaker program has been excellent, and we have hosted many of the top officials, business and community leaders and newsmakers in our state. As a result, membership attendance at morning meeting has increased and remains strong.

Club Service Activities

Rotary Club of has been very active in club service this year. Because of lava threat in October, 2014, we were required to evaluate our long term club strategy in the event Pahoa was cut off from the north part of Puna as a result of overflow of Highway 130. We regularly held assembly meetings for planning of activities and updates on lava activity.

Our club service director organized club speaker calendar and speaker dates were assigned to club members. As a result we have had many varied and accomplished speakers this year.

Both of our 2 new members had previously belonged to Rotary clubs. So they entered the club with a pretty good understanding of Rotary principles and organization. Both became active right away. One took over responsibility for our Reading to Kindergarten grant program.

Being a small club we tend to have high participation in club activities. Every member has some assigned responsibility.

We also participated in several joint club activities:

1. Participated with Maui clubs in distribution of approximately $28,000 raised in Project Kokua-Maui to help farmers in lower Puna and the local Foodbasket program in the wake of Hurricane Iselle. We subsequently joined with other East Hawaii Rotary clubs and Chef Lyndon Honda (Maui) in a fundraiser called Project Kokua II – Hilo. Approximately $14,000 was raised to help community agencies that responded to community needs after Hurricane Iselle and during the lava threat. We will participate with East Hawaii Clubs in a Friendship Exchange steakfry in May.

Five months: September, October, November, February & March. NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION/MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: We host a personal meeting with every potential new member. At this meeting the two Past Presidents review our Club Membership Handbook, which is a 20-page tool to help the prospective member understand “everything you wanted to know about Rotary but were afraid to ask”. (This Membership Handbook is updated each year and every member in our club receives an electronic or hard copy at the beginning of the Rotary Year.) Once inducted and receiving their New Member Red Badge, the new member receives a “Homework Assignment” which is to meet with the individual chair of each Avenue of Service. During these meetings the Chair outlines the details of his/her committee and is available to answer in-depth questions about how our club participates in this particular avenue. Also included in the “Homework Assignment” is to serve as a Greeter at a Meeting, attend a club social, and attend a club service project. Once the new member has completed their “homework” the President presents the new member with their “Official” Blue Badge during a club meeting. The new member is also assigned a “mentor” who is different from their sponsor. One of our new members will be our club president in 2016-17. We have also submitted our Ignite Scoresheet and earned Premier Status. LITERACY PROJECTS/CLUB SERVICE: In lieu of a speaker’s gift at our meetings, we give the speaker a slip to write a message. Narrative

Our club initiated a wonderful Service Project called “Rotary Saves Lives”. The public was benefited by ‘health education”. It also brought a lot of attention to “Rotary” in the community. The Community participated widely. In addition, we had help with volunteers from other Rotary clubs, such as Kahala Sunrise, E-Club, East Honolulu and Windward Club. The Chamber of Commerce also participated.

We obtained permission from the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center to host this event. We then contacted 1. Fire Department who arrived with a fire truck and allowed Keiki’s to climb over it and they educated them about the truck and Fireman 2. Blood Bank – they were thrilled as they anticipated only receiving about 15 pints of blood, but 27-29 were donated. They are urging us to do it again. 3. Bone Marrow Registry – educated the public and received five qualified applicants,4. Longs Minute Clinic – put out supplies and many items for the public to take, including thermometers, etc. Blood pressures were also taken. 5. Police Department, fingerprinted the Keiki’s and gave them an I.D. There was so much, am just listing the next few quickly: 6. BMI – body mass index; 7. Eye clinic by Dr. Eade – tests were given; 8. Bicycle Safety _ Natalie Watase;9. Manaluoa ( excuse my spelling) Bay – educating the public; and a few more. Lastly there were a few games for the Keiki’s.

We learned a few things and plan to have a smoother program this coming July, by popular request.

Social Events:Our small club turns each evening into a social event. Specifically, we had a “Change of Command” evening; Christmas Party at the home of one of our members: a “Spanish night’ with a special flamingo dancer and potluck at one of the members homes; and a potluck and setup evening for one of our garage sales.
