What is REDI?REDI is the Rotarian Emergency Disaster Initiative.

Launched in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina by the three Rotary Directors of the paired zones along the gulf coast, REDI has become a source of disaster awareness for Rotarians, Rotary Clubs, Zones, and Districts. Don Mebus, Barry Rassin and Bob Stuart convened the North American-Rotary Emergency Disaster Initiative“REDI” to discuss what had been learned and help the zones be prepared for any future disaster.

Since that time, REDI’s scope has broadened to include the Caribbean and South America. This new scope triggered a name change in 2010 to Rotarian Emergency Disaster Initiative.

REDI is not a part of Rotary International; rather it is an initiative by Rotarians for Rotarians.

REDI's Mission is to train Rotarians to be prepared when disaster strikes. REDI does not provide disaster response, but is dedicated to training and preparation.

ROTARY CLUB OF SINT MAARTENBreaking Barriers Tournament

Early December saw the final showdown in the male and female singles finals of the tournament at "Princess Port de Plaisance Resort" tennis courts. (The club supports this organization.) Rotarians arranged for a special seat at the grandstand, from where theycould watch the games and talk to the players.

First was the match of Esther Vergeer, the No. 1 ranked female player in the world, and she took on Kaithlyn Verfuerth. Esther won this match. Then came the match of the male players between Stephane Houdet, the world No. 1 ranked wheelchair lawn tennis player, and Micheal Jeremiasz (my grandson Adriaan’s favorite). Stephane Houdet came out as winner.

After losing the game, Micheal signed a tennis ball for my grandson, and even taught him some basics of tennis.

We have to thanks the "Be Able Foundation" for an event well done.

The Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise Visits the Crystal Foster Home for Christmas Tree Lighting & Fellowship

Philipsburg, December 11, 2012: The Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise visited the Crystal Foster Home in South Reward to fellowship and celebrate the upcoming Christmas holidays with the children from the home. A Christmas tree, lights and decorations were donated by the club.

Also present were the St. Maarten Academy Interact Club and the Mohican Scouts of St. Maarten. The Scouts presented a beautiful rendition of an African dance, while the youth from the Crystal home showcased their talents by modeling and singing. Later that day, all present sang Christmas Carols and the children decorated the Tree. Snacks and drinks was also served.

ROTARY PARTNERSHIP…submitted by Karen John

Rotary Donates $52,500 to My Brothers WorkshopTrying to reduce crime

The Rotary Club of St Thomas, Rotary Club of St Thomas Sunrise, Rotary District #7020, Rotary Club of New Bern, North Carolina, Rotary District #7720 and the Rotary Foundation collectively donated $52,500.00 for the purchase of all necessary carpentry equipment for My Brothers Workshop.

My Brothers Workshop takes young men from the world of crime and teaches them a trade – they have placed 187 graduates in the construction work force on the island over the past several years.

Rotary’s contribution will allow My Brothers Workshop to expand allowing more young men this opportunity. The founder, Scott Bradley, has been the moving force behind this program and after training the first group of students has drawn his supervisors and mentors from that group and now has these graduates training new members.

There were 66 homicides in the Virgin Islands in 2010.

This is the highest murder rate per capita in the United States. My Brother’s Workshop is a non-profit Virgin Islands charitable corporation.

The program took 80 boys off the street. It has been organized to provide hope, faith and purpose to at-risk and high-risk young people in the US Virgin Islands by offering mentoring, counseling, paid job training, education and job placement.

These efforts are being made in association with other local and national groups functioning with purposes consistent with those listed below.

The program focuses on youth, both boys and girls, ages 16-24 who have dropped out of school, are marginally literate and live in poverty or are homeless. Many of these youths have been involved in gang or gang related activities or/and have a juvenile criminal record.

The objectives of the program include:

Mentoring the youth while they are in the program through positive reinforcement, moral values, respect and trust from the trainers, staff, volunteers and board of directors.

Mental health counseling through human service’s existing programs and volunteer counselors that can focus on identifying specific issues such as anger management, domestic violence, and substance abuse.

Paid job training through specific industries that are proven economical outlets in the US Virgin Islands such as construction and small trade skills like woodworking, plumbing, masonry, and carpentry. Hospitality and tourism including: service, cooking, baking, housekeeping, maintenance, salon services, and retail.

Education through GED tutoring, re-acclimate the youth back into traditional high school programs and consider non-traditional schooling such as a charter program that can be hosted on the MBW property and can be funded through educational grants and private funding.

With the rate of homicides going up in the Virgin islands, the community must join together to help our children.

We cannot continue this downhill spiral of looking away when the youth of the Virgin Islands are caught up in such violence.

My Brother’s workshop’s new location, a 12,000 square foot storage and work facility is at the TuTu Park Mall, at the former site of the Plant Depot. With Rotary’s donation, a 40ft container of new tools was delivered to the facility.

It is our hope to continue to promote this organization as one of hope for our youth’s future.

RCLPers were busy wrapping gifts on Monday night (December 10) in preparation for the annual Christmas treat to the young ones at our adopted school the New Providence Primary.

This annual event takes the form of singing, story telling, reading, etc. The children are fed and then the most exciting part for them –the arrival of Santa to present gifts.

What an incredibly busy first half of the year the Rotary Club of Trafalgar has had!

We have really followed “Service Above Self” and have pursued a number of our service project, through our “Roving Rotarian” project, which sees the club engage in “smaller” projects each month.

We had the pleasure of reading with the children at the Trench Town Reading Centre, an inner city community in Kingston, made famous by Bob Marley. The shoes came off, as our fellow Rotarians got cozy on the rug with the kids in the centre's reading nook. Reading in itself is a powerful thing. But reading aloud with such an amazing group of young people made it even more special. Even the children who were shy at first eventually showed confidence after lending their voices to a few lines from

their favourite stories.

For International Coastal Clean Up, we worked in collaboration with the Jamaica Environmental Trust. This year we worked at the Rocky Point Beach on the Palisadoes Strip, in Kingston, Jamaica. Our club members participated in administrative roles as well as the actual beach cleanup.

We ended the year working with the Jamaica Autism Support Association (JASA) at their annual Christmas treat, as well as partnered with the Calvary Gospel Church and the Blood Bank of Jamaica for “A Gift of Blood” blood drive.

Service projects aside, we also launched our plans to start an Interact Club at Clan Carthy High School, in Kingston. The first official sensitizing meeting with the students was held in October as a number of member from the club explained to the students what Rotary is about, what Interact is about and engaged them in a "getting to know each other" activity.

Other meetings at the school involved teaching the students the Four Way Test as well as having them meet the Interact Presidents from Kingston College and Alpha High school for them to have an information session with the students.

They even enjoyed a meeting that simulated an actual Rotary meeting, following the necessary protocols and observances. President Michele Salmon was the guest speaker and spoke to the students about Interact, as well as the importance of achieving at school.

Vocational service was also important. Rotarians volunteered to deliver career talks at the Junior Achievement Jamaica Programme. The Junior Achievement programme delivers several levels of training in schools. These include entrepreneurship, managing finances and other streams contributing to the students' growth and personal development. Members of the club will also serve as judges and mentors in Junior Achievement's Company of Entrepreneurs in January 2013, where over 40 schools across the island will deliver presentations on start-up businesses in their schools. An important element in the student competition will be the demonstration of community services and corporate social responsibility in the students' business operations.

We ended the year with our annual Christmas dinner and celebration of our fourth “birthday”, and look forward to sharing our plans with you in 2013!

Rotaract Sunrise Last H.A.M event a Success

The Rotaract Club of St. Maarten Sunrise held a very vigorous food and clothing drive during the Hurricane season for 2012 from July-November. The Club last H.A.M event was held on Saturday 10th November 2012 and it was a success.

For the past months, Rotaract Sunrise Hurricane Awareness Mission attracted many customers at the various supermarkets as themembers campaigned hard to make sure that the island was well stocked with non-perishable items and clothing in case a Hurricane or natural disaster strike the island. Rotaract’s Hurricane Awareness Mission is a project whereby the club members collect non-perishable items and clothing from customers shopping at the supermarket.

The items collected are then given to the local Red Cross in the event of a hurricane or natural disaster. If there are no natural disasters, The Red Cross distributes the items to persons in the community that are in need.

All H.A.M events would not have been possible if the various Supermarkets did not allow the members of the Rotaract Club to set up a station outside their business. The Rotaract Club of St. Maarten Sunrise would like to take this opportunity to publicly extend sincere gratitude to the management and staff of Cost U Less, Sunny Foods Supermarket and Le Grande Marche for granting the club permission to carry out this important drive.

The members of the Rotaract Club would also like to extend its appreciation and gratitude towards members of the community that made contributions to the H.A.M events.

The Hurricane Awareness Mission does not stop here; any day we can be affected by a natural disaster; therefore, we have to continue preparing our island with the necessary items that we will need to survive. Donations of clothing or non-perishable items can be given to the Red Cross throughout the year.

The Rotaract Club will be commencing its annual H.A.M events on July 6, 2013.

Rotaract brings the Christmas spirit to the Pediatric Ward

The Rotaract Club of St. Maarten Sunrise brought the Christmas spirit to the Pediatric Ward at the St. Maarten Medical Centre on Saturday 8th December 2012. The Rotaract members took the initiative of providing a Christmas tree, decorations and gifts to the staff and patients at the Ward so they too can celebrate the holidays in the confines on their environment.

The club believes that Christmas is about sharing of ourselves with others, giving to others that need our help and reviving the old traditions of Christmas that our community have lost. What is most important to the members of the Rotaract club is promoting and participating in the magic and wonder that children find in Christmas. Rotaract wanted to show a time of love and generosity to the Ward and we are happy that we can put a smile on the children's faces at Christmas time.

The Rotaract Club of St, Maarten Sunrise would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Mr. Vhaugn Bahadur of Le Grande Marche for contributing the Christmas tree towards this cause. The club would like to take this opportunity to extend Happy Holidays to one and all and a prosperous New Year 2013.

really appreciative of the nice gesture Rotaract showed towards the Pediatric ward.

Rotaract Sunrise provides warm meals to the less fortunate citizens

The Rotaract Club of St. Maarten Sunrise provided over 100 plates of food to the less fortunate citizens of St. Maarten on December 26th 2012. The members went around delivering meals to citizens in the Dutch Quarter, Philipsburg, Cay Hill and the Marigot Districts. Other than food and drinks, the members distributed candies and cupcakes to the young children as well.

The members of the Rotaract Club have been doing this event for years as they believe that around Christmas time we should not only receive but give with a kind heart to those that are in need. The club would like to thank Mr. Russell Bell of "Elle si Belle" bus services for providing us with transportation to carry out this imitative.
