PROGRAM
learned the hard way that sports is only a small part of life.
When his sports career was over, the fame went with it, and Keno found
himself at a point where he had no idea what life had in store. Although he
drank nothing but milk, Kool-Aid and water as a youngster, Keno found
himself wanting to party, which led him to places where he never would have
gone before. He worked several security jobs, but his new lifestyle ended in
an addiction to drugs and totally changed him, stripping him of his family,
finances, and love for life.
One day when he was panhandling in front of a store, Keno came to the
realization that he needed to change or else his addiction would kill him. He
entered rehab, graduating from the program after 24 months, only to
relapse. He then entered the Teen Challenge Program in Michigan. After
finishing that program, he returned to Florida and relapsed yet again. At that point he called Dominic Mararri, an acquaintance from Teen Challenge,
who told him to get on a plane and come to Warren, Ohio.
Keno indicated that he finally found a home here in Warren. He
entered a one year program at the Warren Family Mission, where he still
resides. Living with about 30 men, all with different personalities, has
groomed him for life by teaching him commitment, respect and problem
solving skills. The structured environment has provided the opportunity to
help out at the church and food pantry. As a result, Keno stated that he
now has a purpose in life that he is excited about – serving others. In
addition to his work at the Family Mission, Keno shares his story with
young people to encourage and inspire them to stay focused on a greater
purpose in life, not just sports, and to listen to the wisdom other people.
Many thanks to Keno for sharing his message with us, and
congratulations to him for his commitment to his recovery and service to
others.
