What a treat it was to
have the comedic actor,
Paul Lynde (AKA Scott
Lewis) make a guest
appearance at the Rotary
Club of Warren’s October 4,
1972 meeting! His
Fellowship 2.0 presentation
put a smile on the face of
everyone in attendance.
Other guests at today’s
meeting included Venita
Collins’ husband, Roger.
Paul Lynde was born in
Mount Vernon, Ohio in 1926. Most of us remember him as the zany
Uncle Arthur on the longest running supernatural-themed sitcom series,
Bewitched (1960s – 1970s). He is a lovable character who has also
appeared in TV shows such as Red Buttons, Perry Como, Patty Duke,
The Munsters, F-Troop, That Girl, and The Beverly Hillbillies. He
starred in Bye Bye Birdie with Ann Margaret and Dick Van Dyke. He
can currently be seen in the center square on the American tic-tac-toe
game show, The Hollywood Squares.
However, Paul’s popularity in Warren has grown over the years in large
part due to his appearance in shows at the Kenley Players alongside
other stars of the stage and screen. The Kenley Players have
presented productions in Warren since 1958 and billed themselves as
“America’s most exciting summer theatre”. Paul has become the most
popular Kenley Player of all time. He has been asked to appear in
plays on the summer stock theatre circuit, such as Don’t Drink the
Water, The Impossible Years, and Plaza Suite.
Paul is admired by his peers. Mel Brooks has indicated that Paul is
capable of getting laughs by reading a phone book, tornado alert, or
seed catalog. He is known for his one-line zingers on Hollywood
Squares and is paid double of what most everyone else on the show

gets! Although he only appeared in nine episodes of Bewitched, he is
hailed as Samantha’s most memorable character and became very good
friends with Elizabeth Montgomery and her husband, the executive
producer of the show.
We appreciate Paul taking time out of his busy schedule to join us for
our meeting. I’m sure we’ll be seeing much more of him on the stage,
and I wouldn’t be surprised if an Emmy is in his future!
