The Cadets embarked on a journey to Fort Story in Virginia Beach to conduct a Leadership Development Exercise (LDX). The day was carefully planned by the leadership within the Pirate Battalion. Cadets had the unique experience of a CH-47F Chinook landing on the practice football field of Hampton University. It arrived to transport contracted cadets to Fort Story. All Cadets and guests were given the opportunity to board the aircraft and enjoy the impromptu tour. There was also an intuitive briefing in regards to the aviation branch and the history of the unit itself. As soon as the Chinook landed at Fort Story, our skills were put to the test with land navigation. It was especially interesting considering that the MSIs and MSIIs had been under the instruction of MSG Darrell Cornelius for map reading, terrain analysis, and land navigation classes leading up to the LDX. The next order of business was to have everybody split into small teams. Each team had a MSIII and MSIV present to supervise and guide them to the desired outcome. The pressure was alive and well as soon as the coordinates and maps were distributed. Each squad was given a variable amount of points that they needed to plot and find and time was of the essence. At each location there was a sign or marker with a specific combination of numbers and letters that needed to be annotated in order to confirm it was the correct location. The semi-brisk day passed by and LDX was concluded with an AAR (After Action Report). It was determined that many of the Cadets honed in on the mindset that was consistent with being a lifelong learner. Each Cadet used collaborative teamwork and was able to retain something from this rare experience, which made it very worthwhile for all involved. This was only a small part of what the program has in store for this spring semester, so stay tuned!

The Hampton University Pirate Battalion welcomed two sets of twins into the program last semester!

Dominique and Gabrielle Wilson are from Antioch, California. Dominique Wilson is a Kinesiology major while Gabrielle Wilson is an Interdisciplinary Studies major. Aside from their academics, the Wilsons have become involved with ROTC activity teams! Dominique is a member of the Color Guard and Gabrielle is a member of the Ranger Challenge Team.

Jada and Jasmyn Bostic are from Cleveland, Ohio. However, they have recently moved back from Kaiserslaitern, Germany. Jada is a Computer Science major, with a minor in Leadership Studies while Jasmyn is a 5 Year MBA Major, with a minor in Leadership Studies as well. The twins are a part of the Hampton University Track and Field Team. Jada participates in the Indoor Track 400 event and the 4x400, while Jasmyn participates in the 400 Hurdles.

Both sets of twins are continuing to excel academically and physically. We hope to see more from the Wilsons and the Bostics, in and outside of the program. Keep up the great work ladies!

The Pirate Battalion cadets have been very privileged this semester with many Hampton University Military Alumni returning to their “Home by the Sea”; not only to share their experiences, but to also answer questions the cadets had about their future career paths in and outside of the military. With these grand opportunities of meeting such affluent alumni and gaining new perspectives, it begs the question: how can Hampton Ca-dets connect and network with such influential leaders as they embark on their separate ca-reers upon graduation from Hampton University? This is an issue LTC (Ret.) Claude Vann, III and I sat down and tackled together back in October of this year. LTC (Ret.) Vann (a 1970’s Pirate Battalion Hampton University Graduate) stated how there was no real system of continuity for keeping graduates in contact with their battalion after commencement, leading to complete disconnection amongst both parties. To address this issue, I sought after a resource that would provide a simple way to network and keep cadets and alumni up to date all in one place, an online database.

My name is Manfred Patterson, Jr., a graduating Computer Information Systems (CIS) major and senior cadet in Army ROTC. As the Battalion S-2 and a CIS major, my technical experience and computing knowledge made accomplishing this task second nature and essential to my contributions to the Mighty Pirate Battalion.

The Database is called “Hampton University Pirate Battalion Alumni Database.” It uses a third party service called Member Planet. To join the database you must become a member of “Member Planet” via their website or you can submit an email request to join the Pirate Battalion Database Network at [email protected]. The Database can be accessed through your mobile phone on the member planet app or personal laptop. Once you have joined, your membership will include a plethora of features and services. Each member has access to member-wide database forums, personal messaging, email, battalion events calendar, battalion photo albums, Legacy Giving (donation campaigns for the HU Pirate Battalion) and much more. The primary purpose of this database is to give our young future leaders an effective resource to connect with HU military alumni, thus en-hancing their perspective and knowledge and reconnecting alumni to the battalion. Please join our Battalion Database Network. Become a part of this Mighty Legacy!

By: CDT Raven Able123rd Annual Founder’s Day

The Hampton University students celebrated their 123rd Annual Founder’s Day on Sunday, January 31st. From the Wreath Laying Ceremony, to speeches given in Ogden Hall, the Hamptonians were proud to be a part of such a glorious occasion and to honor the Uni-versity’s history. President William R. Harvey spoke at the morning ceremony before placing a wreath around General Samuel Chapman Armstrong’s memorial. In addition to placing a wreath, the Hampton University Army and Navy ROTC programs joined together to pay hom-age to this event. Both formations saluted General Armstrong for his achievements and pioneer-ing efforts to establishing this fine Institution. Cadet Cameron Wells, MS2 and Commander of the Firing Party, instructed a few Cadets to signal off a 3-Volley Salute to pay tribute to General Armstrong as a show of respect.

Following the morning ceremony, a second part of service took place in Ogden Hall, where numerous people were acknowledged. There were many Presidential Citizenship Award Recipients, and newly inducted members to the Quarter Century Club. The Hampton University Symphonic Choir displayed two excellent selections for the day, and President Harvey gave an outstanding speech.

Mr. Michael D. Armstrong, a former Hamptonian, was the Founder’s Day guest speaker. As an Executive Vice President and General Manager for International Brand Develop-ment at Viacom International Media Networks, Armstrong provided current Hamptonians with a few strong words of wisdom and key components to success; while sharing a few of his own experiences as a college student.

Hampton University’s Founder’s Day was a hugely successful and commemorating event! The legacy of General Armstrong lives on in the hearts and minds of Hamptonians of the past, present, and future!

On December 8th, the Mighty Pirate Battalion participated in the VA Hospital’s Annual Christmas Celebration. This was the first time our Battalion was able to participate in such a momentous event. Staff and veterans welcomed the Cadets with the holiday spirit and great appreciation and enthusiasm.

Cadet Deja Dunn, a sophomore Pre-Med Psychology major expressed, “during my visit to the VA Hospital I was pleas-antly surprised to see that the holiday spirit hadn’t forgotten about our veterans and elders. It was great to see how much our young faces and karaoke singing could warm their spirits, even for just the moment. Their happiness made me feel great. I felt very happy and supported by everyone around and I would love to volunteer there, more often.”

Cadets were able to serve food and beverages to the tremendous turnout of veterans and their families. With this exposure for the cadets, we were able to accomplish one goal for the battalion: Building esprit de corps and developing compassionate cadets who understand serving goes beyond the ROTC boundaries. CDT Raven Able, a freshman Journalism major said, “I experienced a great time with my battle buddies!” We will continue to build on this exceptional first year to ensure the Battalion is continually involved with the VA Hospital in the future in as many ways as possible!

Ugly Sweater Party

Photos by: CDT Brett Harris

By: CDT Laura Payton

Hampton University’s Army ROTC Pirate Battalion hosted their first ugly sweater party on December 10, 2015. This event was open to all cadets in the battalion. The cadets were challenged to come with the most ugly Christmas sweater they had, and the turn out was magnificent. Not only were there a good number of cadets attending the event, but the Cadre also arrived sporting their ugly sweaters. The party started off with a senti-mental piece. This year, the Pirate Battalion was hosting a family that was less fortunate for Christmas. Each MS level was required to attain certain items such as water, a turkey, and stuffing. All the items were then boxed up and when the family arrived, it was presented to them as a gift from the Battalion. However, the night was still young. There was food that needed to be eaten, and games to be played. A plethora of activities took place during the party, such as cadet bingo and an impersonation contest. The main event all the cadets were waiting for was the award ceremony. This was no ordinary award ceremony though; the cer-tificates given out here were a slew of comical and parody awards, like the person with the most excuses and spotlight ranger. All cadets took this event in very good spirits. It was a good-hearted laugh, and also time for cadets to get closer and enjoy one another’s company. The Battalion’s first ugly sweater party was a huge success. It will most certainly be making a comeback in time for Christmas of 2016!
