It goes without saying that total reliability at all times is the absolutecondition for any offshore system.

Rothe Erde ball and roller bearings enjoy highest reputation regard-ing the efficiency and reliability an enviable reputation in the offshoreindustry for their efficiency and safety.

They perform every now and then for decades in cranes, derricks, oil mooring stations, rudder propellers and other offshore applications.

The success of Rothe Erde is based on innovation, products tailoredto requirements, manufacturing know-how and thorough commit-ment to quality based on:• Quality assurance system to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000;• Environmental protection to DIN ISO 14001 and• Industrial safety to OHSAS 18001.

International certifying authorities and classification companies regularly verify that our technology meets the particularly require-ments applying to all offshore-specific applications.

Rothe Erde slewing bearingsare globally recognized for theirout standing performance in offshore cranes where they doprove their functionality underextreme conditions.

Based on the experience RotheErde does support the wholeproject chain starting from thedesign of the bearing over boltcalculations up to safety devices.

Naturally Rothe Erde does alsohave the capabilities to verifythe interaction of the bearingwith the customers companionstructure including simulatedreality tests.

Offshore oil and gas mooring applications do re-quire highest demands on load-transmission andsealing systems. The slewing bearings used forthis application do safeguard the compensationof any outer influence caused by the rough con-ditions of the sea.

The main bearings used for typical oil-buoys aswell as for large floating-units do have to coverthe whole variety of loads arising from the opera-tion. The permanent extraction of the fluid isbeing granted.

SwivelTypical applications for RotheErde slewing bearings are swivelbearings for single swivels tomake stiff connections flexible. On the other hand, those slew ingbearings are also used in swivelstacks, which are arranged withinthe turret where they allow thatthe complex number of risersdo rotate.

These bearings are supplied forexternal as well as for internalturret systems.

The major constrains are leak-tightness and precision.

Steerable ThrustersCompared to the conventionalsteering systems consisting of aseparate rudder and propeller, the integrated solution withthrusters did revolutionize navalarchitecture. With the moderndesign, thrusters can be placedanywhere in the vessel ensuringimproved propulsion, exact maneuverability in any directionindependently of the speed.

Basis for this evolution is anabsolute leak-tight ball or rollerslewing bearing with a sophisti-cated sealing system.

Applications are drill-vessels,semi-submersibles and supplyvessels.

Recently also the largest cruise-liners do take advantage of thistechnology.

Rothe Erde Integrated Wear Measuring Device (IWM) for Slewing Bearings.

12

After a longer period of operation the service lifeof slewing bearings may be reached. This timecannot be determined in advance, as it essentiallydepends on maintenance and condition of use.

When exceeding the service life normally the formation of pittings starts, i.e. small metal partsbreak loose from the hardened raceway. With afurther use of the bearing these pittings can leadto greater material outbreaks, which will thencause a destruction of the bearing.

As mostly the production of slewing bearings isdone as single part production, the time of de -livery for a spare bearing may amount to severalmonths. This results in a longer breakdown of theworking equipment. As a preventive measure aspare bearing should be available near the place ofuse, however, this may not always be practicablefor the various reasons.

With the patented invention of an integrated wearmeasuring device for slewing bearings, Rothe Erdeoffers an online examination of the maximum tolerated axial clearance of the bearing. Operationinterruptions for determination of the axial clear -ance are not necessary. Service personnel canmeasure the current wear rate of the bearing at anytime by manual actuation of the measuring unit.

A pin of stainless steel is located in the area of thepeak load of the raceways. The pin is electricallyisolated from the ring into which it is mounted. Itextends into a hub, which is located in the counterring. The maximum tolerated clearance can beadjusted through the hub width. In case of an in-admissible increase of clearance, the ring and thepin will get into contact. Through the connectionof the pin to an electrical lead by means of a cableshoe a signal can be released on contact of thepin with the counter ring. This signal shows thatthe acceptable relative movement of the ringshas been achieved and a bearing investigationhas to be effected.

13

AdvantagesCompared with the classical reduction this meas -uring device offers the advantage that the defor-mation of the companion structure or the elasticityof the bolt connection do not essentially influencethe measurement result. The elastic approximationof the raceways, the axial clearance of the bearingand the out-of-flatness of the contact surfacecan be compensated. When using this wear indi-cator the costs for the maintenance personnelare minimized.

Simulation of Integrated Solution.14

The machine manufacturers calculate normallythe adjoining companion structures by aid of finiteelements models.

Defined interfaces can feed the information ofthe companion structures into the finite elementsmodel of the slewing bearing enabling the calcu-lation to consider the stiffnesses of the super-structure and of the undercarriage. Fully centralizeddevelopment of an expensive overall model is nolonger necessary.

The bearing rings used for slewing bearings haveonly a relatively large diameter in relation to theircross-sectional area. Consequently, their inherentstiffness is limited. For this reason, the supportingstiffness provided by the companion structureshas a major influence on the load bearing charac- teristics of such a slewing bearing.

To be able to exploit the optimisation potentialconsistently, an integral calculation by aid of thefinite elements analysis is imperative. Therefore,an optimum design is a joint task involving theslewing bearing manufacturer and the machinemanufacturer.

This avoids the problems in - volved with having to interpretunfamiliar design documentation.A know-how transfer does nottake place.

The following part models arelinked for the purpose of theanalysis:• the upper companion structure

from the customer • the slewing bearing including

fastening bolts• the lower companion structure

from the customer.

The information of the part models can be easily ex-changed by e-mail.

Leakage test

The diversity of bearing applications in offshoretechnology require continuous innovations and ahuge variety in design.

Rothe Erde engineers have to consider from opti-mum load transmission over safety aspects up toeconomic efficiency. Needless to say, that the requirements differ between the parties involved,i.e. certifying authorities, end-users and operatingstaff and thus an optimization of the product canbe ambitious.

To ensure that Rothe Erde slewing bearings will continuetheir reputation for reliabilityand economy, our R&D Centreperforms continuous testing inrelentless real-life conditions.

The latest findings, experienceand innovations are being com-bined in order to create newtechnologies. Rothe Erde hasdeveloped for example seg-mental bearings of various types,corrosion-free bearings withspecial sealing systems, lubri-cation sampling and bearingcondition monitoring systems.

Rothe Erde does accept the responsibility for its customers as well as the challenge to keepthe lead in the wide variety ofslewing bearings in order tosupport the offshore markets of the future.
