What is the definition of a concussion? It is simply a severe or mild blow to the head. When this happens the brain bounces around inside of the skull. Similar to a seizure the brain cells all fire at once. Some studies show that athletes have similar brain activity to those persons who are in a coma. There are varied ways of receiving a concussion. Hitting of the head against an object, which could be the floor, wall or another person. A suddenly induced movement to the head, much like that of a punch in the sport of boxing. Surprisingly there are only a very small percentage of athletes who loose consciousness because of a concussion, according to a study in 2004 of professional athletes. Any sport where there is contact will pose some risk of athletes suffering from the effects of a concussion. In recent months reports in the media of hockey players being sidelined for the season have made parents aware of the contact in the sport that their sons and daughters love to play. According to brainline.org signs and symptoms of a concussion or traumatic brain injury include the following, headaches, numbness, weakness, confusion, vomiting, nausea, slurred speech, and decreased coordination or balance. Getting a diagnosis early is important. Doctors are then able to help the patient become more like their normal self sooner. Treatment options can include physical therapy, occupational therapy, vocational therapy, cognitive therapy, acupuncture, complementary medicine, and simple physical and cognitive rest. Sport seasons are winding down but that does not mean that parents and athletes should not be aware of the dangers of a concussion. Like with Jordan, the blow that requires attention is not always made during a game but in normal every day practice. By education, people will be able to get early care to the athletes. Sitting out a game or two may be difficult but, easier than missing out longer than that.
