EDITORIAL The lockdown continues Firstly I hope that everyone has managed to endure the last month without too many issues and are now looking forward to seeing a further relaxation in the rules to enable us to get out riding again. I garaged my bike on the 20 th January just before my knee replacement surgery and have not been able to ride it since. Luckily I purchased an E-Mountain Bike while recovering from my operation as I thought that it would be a great way to strengthen my knee following surgery. We have had some great weather so it has been an excellent time to get into the Redwoods and ride some of the access roads (I am keeping off the trails at the moment). I started the riding slowly but over the month have managed to cover over 300km of enjoyable riding. But it’s not the same as getting out on the motorcycle. No doubt everyone has managed to thoroughly clean and polish their bike, checked the Warrant and Rego expiration. While you have an extension for Rego renewal you still have to pay for the time that you could not use the bike. Bugga!! In addition all of the jobs that you had been planning to do around the house will have been attended to. So when it is time to ride you will be ready to do so. But in the meantime put your thinking caps on and plan some rides and pass these onto Hartley to incorporate into the Runs calendar. As we approach the end of week one of Level #3 lockdown I hope that everyone is continuing to stay safe. Smokey #3703 [email protected] ROTORUA RAMBLINGS April 2020

EDITORIAL

The lockdown continues Firstly I hope that everyone has managed to endure the last month without too many issues and are

now looking forward to seeing a further relaxation in the rules to enable us to get out riding again.

I garaged my bike on the 20th January just before my knee replacement surgery and have not been

able to ride it since. Luckily I purchased an E-Mountain Bike while recovering from my operation

as I thought that it would be a great way to strengthen my knee following surgery.

We have had some great weather so it has been an excellent time to get into the Redwoods and ride

some of the access roads (I am keeping off the trails at the moment). I started the riding slowly but

over the month have managed to cover over 300km of enjoyable riding. But it’s not the same as

getting out on the motorcycle.

No doubt everyone has managed to thoroughly clean and polish their bike, checked the Warrant and

Rego expiration. While you have an extension for Rego renewal you still have to pay for the time

that you could not use the bike. Bugga!!

In addition all of the jobs that you had been planning to do around the house will have been attended

to.

So when it is time to ride you will be ready to do so. But in the meantime put your thinking caps on

and plan some rides and pass these onto Hartley to incorporate into the Runs calendar.

As we approach the end of week one of Level #3 lockdown I hope that everyone is continuing to

stay safe.

Tony joined Ulysses on 26th July 1993. Since that time he has served on the Rotorua Branch committee in a variety of roles. Tony ran the production of the Branch magazine from April 1999 until November 2005, during which time he organised the transition of it from traditional mail to internet distribution. At various times over many years he has acted as the Branch Runs Coordinator, a position he has currently held for the last 5 consecutive years. This is an important position in any branch as success in this area is critical to the wellbeing of a Branch. Tony has been very successful in this role and has been able to capture the enthusiasm of members and ensure that a successful programme has operated over a number of years. Tony attended his first A.G.M in Dunedin in 1998, and since that time has been a fantastic ambassador for the Rotorua Branch. It is doubtful whether there would be any longstanding member anywhere unaware of Tony and his wife, Marlene. Tony has helped out many club members who have been passing through Rotorua and who have experienced a breakdown with their motorcycle. From putting their bike on a trailer and getting it to a repair shop, to helping fix the problem, to loaning his spare Goldwing alternator. He is a constant attendee and volunteer, and often the instigator of functions and events. Our own Okataina Rally, held in June each year, owes much of its success to Tony's (and Marlene's) involvement and input. While a “true gentleman” in the traditional interpretation of the phrase, he is often a perpetrator or at least has some involvement in “disgraceful” (i.e. Ulysses!) acts.

This attitude is what has promoted the small Rotorua Branch of Ulysses to remain very successful and to maintain an atmosphere of camaraderie and professionalism

In short, Tony is the embodiment of what Rotorua, and New Zealand, Ulysses aspires to be.

FLASH#1272

ULYSSES ODE TO COVID-19

It’s hard to be a biker

When rules are put in place,

“Stay in” they say,

You must obey,

Stick to your main home base.

Your family are your friends,

TV is your lifeline,

Bake some bread,

Stay in bed,

But go out and risk a fine.

Stare longingly at your bike,

And clean it one more time,

Stay healthy and fit,

You disgraceful git!

Soon into the saddle you’ll climb.

My Suzuki is shiny and gleaming,

Not often it looks so good.

My anticipation,

With no fraternisation,

Is putting me in riding mood!

If you hanker to be on the road,

Then plan your next long ride,

You’ll be ready, therefore,

When lockdown is no more,

And your machine you’ll be astride.

Back to “Aroma” for coffee,

And a cake, some chips, and a bun,

Your appetite

Has no respite,

Nor does your desire for fun.

So take it from one who knows,

The wait is all worthwhile,

Just have a rest,

Don’t get depressed,

Soon it will be mile after mile.
