Object Of The Game

The object of the game is to hit a ball (roughly the size of a tennis, but much harder) with a bat.

Once the ball is hit you then need to run around 4 bases to score a run. The team with the most runs

at the end of the game is deemed the winner.

Rules of Rounders

Why are there rules in rounders?

Rules ensure the safety of the players and the competition is fair otherwise it would be chaos.

How is a game started?

The order of teams batting and fielding will be decided by the toss of a coin. The home captain shall toss the coin and the captain of the away team shall call the choice of innings.

The home captain shall toss the coin and the captain of the away team shall call for the choice of inning.

What is a DEAD BALL? Whilst the batter is being changed or a substitution is being made and the bowler has the ball in the bowling square, the ball shall be deemed 'dead'. The bowler's Umpire should call 'play' to restart the game after a stoppage for a dead ball situation.

What are the different playing positions when playing rounders? Fielding team – Bowler, backstop, in field (players on posts) and outfield. Batting team – batters, those batting, those on posts, those waiting to bat and those that are out?

What is the role of the bowler?

BOWLING (A) THE BOWLER The bowler shall deliver one good ball to each incoming batter, except the last remaining incoming batter who is entitled to have the option of three good balls. (b) A bowler may leave the bowling square to field the ball. (c) A bowler may not deliver two consecutive noballs to the same batter. PENALTY- A half rounder to the batting team.

The bowler shall not bowl dangerously. PENALTY- Warned that their action is not within the concept of sporting behaviour and if it is repeated within the game, they will be sent off.

Page 8: Rounders Rules Information - Amazon S3

Self Assessed Peer Assessed Teacher Assessed Comment 8

What is a NO-BALL? (a) Decisions on height are based on the actual height of the batter. Decisions on direction are based on the position of the batter when the bowler releases the ball. (b) A no-ball is one that- (i) is higher than the top of the head or lower than the knee when it reaches the batter (ii) hits the ground on the way to the batter (iii) would hit the batter

How should a ball be bowled?

A ball should be delivered with a continuous and smooth underarm pendulum action which

may be bowled with spin.

What happens if the bowler bowls 2 no balls in a row?

Half a rounder is awarded to the batting team

How many good balls does a batter get before they have to run? BATTING ONE GOOD BALL Each time the batter is called to the square to bat they have the right to one good ball only.

How and where do you bat from? A BATTER Shall stand with both feet within the batting square and shall not cross the front or back line of the square during hitting, or in the course of attempting to hit the ball until the ball has passed.

Where do you run once you hit or miss a good ball? After the first good ball is delivered by the bowler the batter must run to 1st post after having hit the ball, attempted to hit the ball, or let has let the ball pass them.

What happens if a batter hits the ball backwards? A batter who hits the ball so that it lands BACKWARDS behind the batting line is only allowed to first base until the ball passes the batting line, when they are allowed to continue their running.

What happens if the batter hits a no ball? If a batter hits a no ball they cant be out by being caught out or stumped at first post. Once a player is within touching distance of first post they have accepted the ball and score in the usual way. They can be out after passing first post.

Page 9: Rounders Rules Information - Amazon S3

What are the ways a batter can be out?

What happens if the fielding team obstruct the batting team? The batting team is awarded half a rounder?

What happens if you are the last batter? They have the option of three good balls unless they are caught on any of them. They shall have taken a ball if they are in touching distance of 1st post and can be put out in any of the usual ways. If the ball is placed in the batting square before they reach 4th they will also be out. They are entitled to one minute rest after each rounder they score.

Additional Rules That Cause Confusion

Use of Runners

Rounders England do not support the use of runners. This was open to abuse by teams using

their best batters / runners under the guise of an injury. At the beginning of the match you need to

submit the nominated team sheet including any substitutes, who may be brought in to replace any

injured batter. If a player is injured prior to the start of the game, they should not be added to the

team sheet.

(a) Substitutes may only be changed at a dead ball situation.

(b) Players once substituted may return during the game, but batters only in the position of their

original number.

Dead Ball– Whilst the batter is being

changed or a substitution is being

made and the bowler has the ball in

the bowling square, the ball shall be

deemed ‘dead’.

The bowlers umpire should call ‘play’

to restart the game after a stoppage

for a dead ball situation.

The Infamous “Misfield Rule”

Firstly, there is no such thing as a misfield rule. There is a

common misconception that a post can become

‘unstumped’ if the ball is misfielded but quite simply, a

post cannot be unstumped. So…. if a batter managed to

reach 3rd as 4th was stumped and the bowler dropped the

returning ball, the batter may wish to run on (especially if

there are only a couple of batters left in) but would not

score.

Scoring When A Post Is Stumped

If the batter was between 2nd and 3rd when fourth was

stumped, this would not stop them from scoring in the

usual way as it has to be the post immediately in front of

the batter that is stumped to prevent scoring.

Umpires should have a keen eye for batters that ‘hover’

between posts so that they can still score. THIS IS NOT

ALLOWED, any batter approaching a post and then not

making contact MUST be asked to do so by the umpire,

and if they refuse they will be out.

Holding on to the Bat

A batter must hold on to the bat

whilst running round the track. If

losing the bat is a genuine accident,

then once the game play is at a dead

ball situation (ball back with bowler)

the umpire should ask the batter to

retrieve their bat. However if they

drop or throw the bat deliberately,

then the batter is out. A batter can

still score without a bat.

2m zone line – Turning the Corner and Running On.

As long as a batter maintains contact with the post they may turn the corner and wait in

anticipation of the next ball. They may decide not to run (a batter waiting at a base does not have

to run on every ball bowled, unless of course there is another batter running to that post). The

rule where an umpire orders the batter to run on comes in to force if they turn the corner, over the

2m zone line and do not make contact with the post, or if they have made contact initially, and

then lost contact.

Penalty – The umpire shall order the player back to the post they passed. Batters Leaving the Square

A batter is out if their foot projects over the front or back line of the batting square before they

have hit the ball or it has passed them. The main reason for this is the health and safety and helps

keep a safe distance between the bowler and the batter and the backstop and the batter.

However, once they have completed their batting action they may exit the square in any direction.

Additional Rules That Cause Confusion

The bowler has the ball in the bowling box. What can’t the batter now do if he is stood at 1stpost?

The batter cant run from 1st post to 2nd post. When the bowler has the ball in the bowling box the

batter cant run past or onto the next post

Are you allowed 2 batters at a post? If not what would the umpire do?

No you are not and the umpire would ask the player that arrived first to move onto the next post.

Bowling to the Bat

The batter is allowed to stand anywhere in the batting square and the bowler should bowl to them

appropriately. The bowler does not have to bowl within the batting square limitations, so if a batter

stands with their toes up against the edge of the batting square, then obviously the arm and bat

would be outside the square, and the bowler should still bowl in relation to where the batter is

standing, not the batting square. This is not a wide ball. The umpire should determine this against

where the ball is in relation to the batters body and not the batting square.

HINT – Position of the Batter:

Umpires should note that the accuracy of a ball is judged in relation to the batters’ position in the

square when the ball is released and not the square itself. Therefore a ball bowled outside the

square is not necessarily a wide ball.

Side Out

i) Where there is no batter waiting their turn to bat, all the batters on the running track may be put

out simultaneously by the ball being thrown full pitch, or placed by a fielder into the batting square

before any batter has reached and touched 4th post.

HINT– Any batters reaching 2nd or 3rd post will not score as this action puts them out.

ii) Where there is no batter waiting their turn to bat and the bowler has possession of the ball in the

bowling square so that no batter can leave a post, the innings shall be declared over.

HINT– Any batters in a scoring position will retain their score as this action does not put them out.

Side Out/Innings Over in a Limited Ball Game

Scenario – In a limited ball innings, it is the last good ball, the batter hits the ball, reaches 2nd or

3rd post and stays there;

i) If the fielding side returns the ball to the batting square, the umpire should declare “Side out” and the

batter has no score, because they are ‘out’ on the track

ii) If the fielding side do not return the ball to the batting square, the umpire may wait a brief moment and

observe what happens. If nothing happens the umpire should declare “Innings over” and award a half to the

batter at 2 or 3, even if the fielding side have stumped the post ahead of the batter and/or returned the ball to

the bowler

iii) If the rules of the day require it, a ‘countback’ of batters out would mean the “Side out” batter at 2 or 3

would be marked out, but the “Innings over” batter would be still ‘in’ on the score-sheet

Overtaking

(g) A batter may not remain at the same post as another batter. Penalty – The umpire shall order the player

who batted first to run on and may be put out in the usual ways.

Basically, the batter that doesn’t want to move has to, and the umpire should state so. If they are both

between posts and the batter behind runs passed, then they would be out as the overtaker – see rule (i)

(i) A batter completing the track, shall not overtake any batter who is running ahead.

What To Wear When Playing Rounders

Comfortable clothing is important when playing rounders and the weather

and playing surface needs to be considered when playing.

What do players wear? CLOTHING (a) Spiked footwear is prohibited. Studs are allowed providing they measure more than 30mm in circumference at the base and are not longer than 12mmin length. (b) All players, substitutes included, shall be clearly numbered. The numbers shall be clearly visible to the Umpires at all times.

football socks

Team top – usually the same colour so you know who is on your team and can

differentiate the difference between the batting team and the fielding team.

Trainers or football boots – If indoors or the weather is fine and the playing surface is

dry then trainers are suitable. If it is wet or the playing surface is slippery then

foorball boots are best as this enables you to grip when fielding or turning corners.

Scoring Systems of Rounders

How do you score in rounders? You don’t score points goals or runs. In rounders you score rounders or half rounders.

What is one rounder? A rounder can be scored from any one hit, whether the batter gets around the posts in one go or not.

Players can score rounders if they are on posts from no balls.

If a player hits the ball and runs around all four posts before the posts have been touches with the ball, or the bowler has got the ball back.

Backward hit Once the ball that was hit into the backward area is returned to the forward area, the batter may run on from 1st post and score in the usual way.

What is half a rounder? This can be scored if a batter runs around all four posts before the posts have been touches with the ball, or the bowler has got the ball back, but does it without having hit the ball.

If the batter has reached second post, and is put out before reaching fourth post, half a rounder is scored. Unless they are put out with the same ball, (before the bowler has received it for the next batter) in which case, there is no score.

What is a penalty half rounder? If the bowler bowls two no balls in a row.

A fielder obstructs a batter, or the backstop steps over the backstop line before the batter has attempted a hit.

A batter obstructs a fielder.

How can you get 1 and ½ rounder?

One rounder and one penalty half rounder If there is a second no ball, which counts for the penalty half rounder, and the batter hits it and scores a rounder.

If the batter is obstructed while scoring a rounder.

Two penalty half rounders if both of the above apply.

Page 22: Rounders Rules Information - Amazon S3

Self Assessed Peer Assessed Teacher Assessed Comment 22

Stumping the posts and scoring

A player who has just hit the ball is waiting at 3rd post and runs to 4th post which was stumped before the player set off from 3rd post. The batter is not out, does not score a rounder for reaching 4th as it was stumped while he waited at 3rd. He would score ½ a rounder for reaching 2nd on his bat.

If 4th post had been stumped as the batter was travelling towards 3rd then he would have scored a full rounder.

If on his way towards 4th post it had been stumped then the batter would be out.

Explain 7 different ways of scoring in rounders and what you get for each?

Who wins a game of rounders?

The team with the most rounders at the end of the game. The match shall be declared over

as soon as a winning score has been reached.

If the team batting first on their second innings does not score more than the opposition who

has not yet had their second innings then the game is over and the other team does not

have their 2nd innings. The game is over as soon as the 2nd batting team score more than

their opposition if they have already had their second innings.

What happens if it’s a draw at the end of the game?

If it’s a draw at the end of the game the team wins with the most full rounders scored.

Role and Responsibilities of Officials

Why are there umpires in Rounders?

These umpires are to ensure the game is fair and also pick on any infractions whilst the

game is taking place. It’s also up the umpires to try and keep all players safe as well as

keeping equipment in the best possible order.

The Umpires' decisions on any aspect of the game shall be final, but they will discuss any point which is doubtful. In the event of an unclear decision, the team captains may appeal to the Umpires for clarification. The Umpire has the right to order a player off the pitch for unsporting conduct (which includes seeking to gain an unfair advantage), with no substitution being allowed

How many officials are there in rounders and what are they called? For all matches played in accordance with these rules there shall be two Umpires who have specific responsibilities. The referee shall have full charge of, and be responsible for, the proper conduct of the game. His or her duties and jurisdiction shall extend to all points of the game. No player shall dispute the accuracy of the referee's judgement and decision on play. After the toss only the team manager so identified by the captain to the umpires, or the captain, will have power to approach the referee on points of misconduct, or substitution calls. For any unsporting conduct the referee may award batters up to two bases, or declare batters or runners out. ** Umpires ensure the game is played fair and that the scoring is accurate.

What do the officials Wear

There is no official rules on what a rounders official must wear. They need to look smart and different from the teams that are playing.

They may wear a tracksuit with trainers or boots if the weather is not that warm. They may wear a polo shirt with sports and trainers if the weather is warm.

They may have a clipboard to help keep score with a pen and whistle. Some may wear a suite and shoes.

What fitness levels do they need?

They don’t need to be very fit because they stand still for a large proportion of the time. When they move they only move a short distance between post 2 and 4 for the bowling

umpire and 1st and 4th for the batting umpire.

How do the officials communicate decisions? The officials communicate with each other mainly through verbal communication. They

communicate between their positions and if they need to they come together and discuss any issues. They may discuss the number of balls, the score or a decision that needs to be made. They can use non verbal communication to also communicate although there is no

set signals set by Rounders England.

Before The Game umpires:-

Arrive in good time with the correct equipment to officiate the game and complete a risk assessment.

Have a score card, pen and clipboard to score

The referee must acquire the two teams' batting lists before the toss, and ensure that no player, supporter or spectator is nearer than 12 metres to the pitch.

During the game umpires :-

Keep a tally of rounders and players who have been caught or stumped out.

Ensure the rules are followed

Make decisions on all aspects of rules and make decisions to implement fair play

Swap positions after the first innings.

Keep a check of batters out.

Change position after 2 batting innings.

The two officials talk to each other to ensure the rules are adhered to and the scoring is correct.

Dismiss from the game, without substitution, any player deemed to have committed acts of unsporting conduct.

Call all decisions loudly and clearly so all players and the other umpire can hear.

Page 30: Rounders Rules Information - Amazon S3

Self Assessed Peer Assessed Teacher Assessed Comment 30

After the game the umpires:-

Speak with each other and then Inform the team who has won

During The Game The Batting Umpire:-

This will usually stand back from the field between the batter and first post, and is

responsible for the following:

- Call rounder or half a rounder and give the scores of both teams after there has been a

score.

- Call a no ball if it is not delivered with a smooth underarm pendulum motion.

- Call a no ball if the bowlers foot projects out of the front of the bowling square.

- Call no ball where necessary. Makes decisions on the height of the ball and calls a no ball

if it passes the batter below the knees or above the head.

- Make decisions concerning the batters square, as the batter cannot step outside this

square until after the ball has either been hit or they have missed it. This rule does not apply

for no balls.

- Call a backward hit. If the ball is hit beyond the forward/backward line around the pitch, the

batter may only progress to first post.

- Make decisions concerning the first and fourth post if either is stumped (touched with the

ball) by a fielder. The umpire can also move players on if they have lost contact with the

post they were on.

- Make decisions on all catches.

- Call the next player to bat by name or number

- If a player receives a delivery before being called, a void ball will be declared and all the

batters shall return to their positions before the ball was bowled.

- Call 'obstruction' if the backstop steps past the backstop line before the batter has

attempted a hit.

During The Game The Bowlers Umpire:- The bowling umpire starts the game and the innings by calling ‘play’.The batter's Umpire shall stand in a position usually level with the front of the batting box towards 1st post.to judge the receipt of the ball by the batter in the batting square and then reposition themselves to make decisions concerning 1st post and 4th post. They move between 1st post and 4th post ensuring they don’t get in the way of the batting or fielding team. Whilst waiting to go into bat, the batting team must all wait in the batting area found 10m behind the playing line. Two areas should be constructed, one with the waiting batters and the other with the out batters. The batting umpire will ensure the batters are in the correct areas

Page 31: Rounders Rules Information - Amazon S3

Self Assessed Peer Assessed Teacher Assessed Comment 31

The bowler's umpire will usually stand behind second post or between second and third

post, making sure that both the view of the bowler and the batter is clear, and is responsible

for the following:

- Call play at the beginning of each innings, and restarts play after a dead ball situation.

- Call play to restart the game after a dead ball situation

- Call 'no ball' for wides (if the ball is bowled outside the normal reach of the batter with the

bat extended. This also includes bowling to the wrong side of the batter, right side for left-

handed batter, left side for right-handed batter.

- Call 'no ball' if the ball hits or would have hit the batter if they moved.

- Call 'no ball' if the bowlers foot or feet step outside the back line of the bowlers square.

- Call 'no ball' if the bowlers foot or feet step outside the side line of the bowlers square.

- Make decisions about the second and third base regarding post contacts by fielders, early

release by the batters, or running on the inside of the track.

- Make sure that waiting batters and out batters are away from the field of play. If they are

not, a penalty half rounder can be given to the fielding team.

- Call 'half a rounder' if the batter reaches second base. The umpire will also call the player

out if that player is put out from the same ball.

Bowlers Umpire The bowler's Umpire shall stand in a position so that they can see all infringements of the rules for which they are responsible. This may require them to change position to facilitate a clear view of a left handed batter or bowler.

Task 3 – (This needs to be completed for 1 sport)

Applying the basic rules of Rounders into at least four specific situations

1. In a rounders game the batter has a good ball bowled to her. She misses the ball but due to poor fielding manages to get round to 4th base.

The batter is awarded ½ rounder because she did not hit the ball but managed to get all the way round on

her go.

2. In a rounders game the batter has a good ball bowled to her. She misses the ball but managed to reach 2nd base.

The batter does not score anything because if the ball

is not hit you can only score ½ rounder if you reach 4th base.

3. In a rounders game the batter has a good ball bowled to her. She hits it forwards and manages to reach 2nd base.

The batter would score ½ rounder.

4. In a game of rounders the batter drops her bat before setting off around the bases.

The batter is out.

5. In a game of rounders the fielder has the ball in her hand and stumps the post that the batter is running to at exactly the same time that the batter touches the post with her bat (simultaneously).

The batter is not out .

6. In a game of rounders a batter hits a good ball and reaches 3rd base. A fielder stumps 4th base with the ball and then throws it back to the bowler. The ball goes over the bowlers head and rolls towards 1st base. The batter runs on and reaches 4th base .

The batter is not out because the ball was mis-fielded, but she does not score a full rounder because the fielder had already stumped the base directly in

front of the batter. The batter would, however, score ½ rounder because she had hit the ball and reached

2nd base.

7. In a game of rounders the bowler bowls 2 consecutive no-balls to the same batter.

The batting team are awarded ½ rounder.

8. In a game of rounders the batter hits a no-ball, shouts “taken”, and sets off running. She is nearly at second base

when one of the fielders catches the ball.

The batter is not out because you cannot be caught out on a no-ball. Also if the batter went on to reach

2nd base before the post was stumped she would score ½ rounder.

9. In a game of rounders the batter steps forwards out of the batting square to hit a good ball.

The batter is out. You are not allowed to step out of

the batting square.

10. In a game of rounders the batter is not obstructed by a fielder but runs on the inside of the post.

The batter is out.

11. In a game of rounders the batter hits the ball forwards and just as she arrives at 3rd base the bowler catches the ball

inside the bowling square. The batter continues to run on to 4th base.

The batter would be asked to go back to 3rd base before the next ball was bowled because when the

bowler has the ball in her hand and is inside the bowling square the batter has to stop. The batter

would, however, score ½ rounder because she had hit the ball forwards and reached 2nd base.

12. In a game of rounders the batter has hit the ball behind the batting square and reached 2nd base before the backstop

threw the ball back over the batting square.

The batter would be asked to go back to 1st base because if you hit the ball behind the batting square you must wait at 1st base until the ball crosses back

over the line drawn between the batting square and 4th base. If the ball is then mis-fielded the batter can then run on and if she reaches 2nd base she scores ½

rounder. If she reaches 4th base she would score a full rounder.

Task 3 – (This needs to be completed for 1 sport)

Applying the rules of Rounders into at least four specific situations

Example Scenario 1- In a rounders game the batter bowls the ball and it bounces on the way to the batter. She hits the ball and it is dropped in the outfield as she passes 1st post and just before she reached 2nd post. The ball is thrown to 3rd post where it is stumped. The batter remains at 2nd post.

What is the bowling umpires decision – The bowling umpire doesn’t do anything beforer the batter hits the ball as they are not in the best place to make the decision on the ball bouncing and would only make a call if they were certain that it was a no ball and the batting umpire had missed the decision. Once the batter had run passed 1st post the bowling umpire would position themselves in a position to see the batter running towards 2nd in case there was a decision to be made whether they are in or out. As the batter reached 2nd post the umpire would signal half a rounder. The game is restarted with the next batter coming to the batting box and the bowler bowling the next ball What is the batting umpire’s decision – As the ball bounced before reaching the batter the batting umpire would signal a no ball. As the player then hit it and started running the batting umpire would position themselves in sight of first post to make a decision if the batter had taken the ball as when you are in touching distance of first post you have taken the no ball. If the ball had been caught the batter would not have been out as you cant be out on a no ball. How is the game restarted – The batting umpire signals the next batter and the bowling umpire signals the next ball.
