ABOUT THE ROUNDHOUSE

WHERE WE AREThe Roundhouse is located at the corner of Davie & Pacifi c • The Yaletown-Roundhouse Canada Line Station is 100 feet from us, and Buses C21 & C23 stop within feet of the Roundhouse. •

GETTING TO THE ROUNDHOUSE Walking from Granville Street, head east fi ve blocks down Davie • Underground pay parking is avail-able (access off Drake) for $2/hour; $12 max/7am-6pm weekends and holidays and $3/6-11pm everyday. The underground parking closes at 11pm but shows that run later than 11pm will have access through the Roundhouse.

ROUNDHOUSE VISION & MISSIONIn September of 1996 the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood repre-sentatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff , undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions:The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECTAll of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to fi nd new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASISThe Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, trans-forming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTIONThe Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, part-nerships, and our own productions.

The Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre is jointly operated by the Vancouver Board of Parks & Recreation and the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society.

ROUNDHOUSE SOCIETY

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEThe Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre is unique as a community centre. Not only are we situated in a beautiful piece of Vancouver’s history, but we are part of a city-wide initiative to promote arts and culture. The means we serve not only the local community, but the city as a whole.2014 sees some new faces at the Roundhouse. Beverly Walker is our new Interim Volunteer Coordinator while Michele Mateus is away on maternity leave. Andrew McCaw has been hired as our new Technical Director to replace Matt Frankish, who we want to thank for his years of service. And last but not least, Nav Sidhu comes to us from Sunset Community Centre to become the Roundhouse’s new Community Arts and Recreation Supervisor. Nav has been working city-wide at various locations since 2009 and brings a wealth of experience to the Roundhouse. A huge thanks goes out to Kathryn Sweetapple, who was our Interim Supervisor and did an absolutely fantastic job.Because of high demand, we are once again offering piano lessons this fall with our new instructors, Lydia Kay and Julia Villafuerte. The Roundhouse is a renowned centre for community dance in Vancouver, with our well-established programs that bring movers of all ages and abilities together with professional artists to create original dance works. In September, we are pleased to add a mixed abilities dance program with dancer/choreographers Naomi Brand and Mirae Rosner to our rich roster of free community dance. In July 2015 we will be holding our new Market Fair, which will be replacing our old Craft Fair. Please follow along in our fall program guide for additional information on the Market Fair and how you can become a part of it.I want to thank our volunteers. Our amazing volunteer department currently has 212 members. Volunteers provided 8,672 hours of service last year—doing everything from staffing our 400 special events, to teaching tai chi classes, to blogging about our community engagement, to running the Engine Pavilion and everything in between. Volunteering is a fun way to participate and set an example of constructive contribution to your community. Contributing your talent and energy to your community is a tenet of Canadian society, and the opportunity is yours for the asking. If you or your friends are interested, please contact the Roundhouse and you will be directed to our volunteer coordinator, or email [email protected]. As well, the Roundhouse is always looking for energetic people to join our Board of Directors.
