Through it all, he’s been cognizant that the early years in his hometown helped shape the man he would become and he made a commitment to return the favor. “I find so much joy in what I am able to do for others,” Norm said. “It’s the most delightful thing in my life.” In fact, Norm has made many “home improve- ments” in the small farming community that have literally changed the course of the town. The list of projects in which he has invested is long. Since the l990s, he’s funded a community cen- ter housing the city hall, library, museum and post office, four houses for the school system to attract and retain teachers, retractable bleachers in the Win- ifred School Gym, heated and covered bleachers at the football field, the planting of thousands of trees, paid for major improvements at the Winifred Lu- theran Church and donated a parsonage, improved the cemetery, park and pool, improved the airport and built a 100x130-foot hanger, set up scholarships for Winifred students, paid for town sidewalks, built the Winifred International Suites Hotel, 1028 Steak- house and bowling alley, and much more! Most recently, he gifted stock to Central Mon- tana Foundation (CMF) valued at about $2 million to accomplish another list of projects benefiting emergency services, healthcare, town residents and Winifred students. Norm’s transfer of AAON, Inc. stock (a company he founded) will provide $300,000 for Winifred Com- munity Ambulance to purchase a new ambulance and 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) system. “Thanks to Norm’s generosity, we will have an up- to-date ambulance that will serve Winifred and the vast surrounding community,” said Winifred Com- munity Ambulance President Connie Carlstrom. “The 4WD is especially appreciated as there have been instances in the past where we had to transport a patient on the back board in the back of a pickup to the ambulance because of our inability to reach the patient due to mud and snow,” added Shirley Benes. The stock transfer will also provide $100,000 for Central Montana Medical Center (CMMC) towards the purchase of new 3D mammography equipment. Medical Center Foundation Manager Ann Tuss said, “Norm’s pledge is a huge boost towards the eventual purchase of this equipment and we thank him for this gift as well as past support of CMMC projects.” Another $700,000 from the stock transfer is earmarked for the Town of Winifred’s water tower project. Winifred Clerk Jackie Rich said the current 50,000-gallon tank is too small to support the needs of the town, especially during the summer season and isn’t within fire protection codes. It will be re- placed with a 175,000 gallon tank. Winifred is seeking a combination of state and federal grants and loans, and Norm’s generosity will allow them to do the project sooner rather than lat- er. Having an adequate water supply for the town is another step towards economic development. “We’re actually growing when most small towns are not,” Jackie said, crediting Norm’s investment in local busi- nesses and the school system. “We won’t have to say ‘no’ to growth.” The gift to CMF will also provide up to $100,000 in new scholarships for this year’s Winifred High School graduating seniors who are attending a Montana public university, college or vocational school. The remainder of the stock (about $800,000) will be kept in the CMF/Asbjornson-Winifred Educational Endow- ment to fund subsequent scholarships for Winifred students. In the event that all of the earnings aren’t used for scholarships, half will be split annually be- tween the Winifred Elementary School and the Town of Winifred, with the other half going back to the principal of the fund. Norm said he’s pleased to set up funding through CMF and said, “I think it’s a first-class organization and I respect its management and dedication by its volunteer board members.” CMF President Dean Comes said that respect is reciprocal. “Norm’s generosity is beyond impressive and we’re humbled that he is entrusting CMF to help carry out his wishes to improve Winifred and Central Montana.” Norm was born Dec. 10, 1935, to J.O. The

Spring 2019

It’s been more than six decades since a young Nor-man Asbjornson left Winifred following high school graduation, and his life since has been a remarkable journey marked by setbacks and successes. Through it all, he’s been cognizant that the early years in his hometown helped shape the man he would become and he made a commitment to return the favor.

“I find so much joy in what I am able to do for others,” Norm said. “It’s the most delightful thing in my life.”

In fact, Norm has made many “home improve-ments” in the small farming community that have literally changed the course of the town.

The list of projects in which he has invested is long. Since the l990s, he’s funded a community cen-ter housing the city hall, library, museum and post office, four houses for the school system to attract and retain teachers, retractable bleachers in the Win-ifred School Gym, heated and covered bleachers at the football field, the planting of thousands of trees, paid for major improvements at the Winifred Lu-theran Church and donated a parsonage, improved the cemetery, park and pool, improved the airport and built a 100x130-foot hanger, set up scholarships for Winifred students, paid for town sidewalks, built the Winifred International Suites Hotel, 1028 Steak-house and bowling alley, and much more!

Most recently, he gifted stock to Central Mon-tana Foundation (CMF) valued at about $2 million to accomplish another list of projects benefiting emergency services, healthcare, town residents and Winifred students.

Norm’s transfer of AAON, Inc. stock (a company he founded) will provide $300,000 for Winifred Com-munity Ambulance to purchase a new ambulance and 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) system.

“Thanks to Norm’s generosity, we will have an up-to-date ambulance that will serve Winifred and the vast surrounding community,” said Winifred Com-munity Ambulance President Connie Carlstrom. “The

4WD is especially appreciated as there have been instances in the past where we had to transport a patient on the back board in the back of a pickup to the ambulance because of our inability to reach the patient due to mud and snow,” added Shirley Benes.

Alan Aldrich may be new to the Central Montana Foundation (CMF) Board of Direc-tors, but its mission is something with which he is very familiar.

As a long-time employee of Central Mon-tana Medical Center (CMMC), Alan is well aware that CMMC Foundation and CMF have a close working relationship. “The oversight, management and investment opportunities offered by CMF works great for us. Such great things come from that partnership.”

Alan has worked at CMMC since 1978 and served in several capacities through those 41 years. He started in human resources, moved into the position as business office manag-er, then IT, controller, and was promoted to CMMC Chief Financial Officer in 1998. He continues as CFO, and was also named interim Co-CEO in August of 2018.

Alan is a Lewistown native, graduating from Fergus High School in 1974, then earning a degree in Accounting and Business Management in Billings. He worked for a gas and fertilizer distribution company headquartered there for several years before moving back to Lewistown. He worked for a short time on the family ranch in the Big Snowy Mountains before go-ing to work for CMMC. He and his wife, Christie, raised four children in Lewistown and have eight grandchildren.

He’s proud to have spent most of his career working at CMMC and emphasized the important role the facility plays in the Central Montana community. “For the whole time I’ve been here, CMMC has been one of the largest employers in the area; that’s a signif-icant economic impact! The employment opportunities CMMC

provides are huge.” CMMC is one of the largest Critical Ac-

cess Hospital (CAH) in the State of Montana and has consistently been named by the Rural Health Care Association as one of the top 20 hospitals and in the top 100 for CAHs in the nation. He said CMMC is able to provide a full spectrum of health care services with state-of-the-art equipment and a professional, caring medical team on-hand.

Alan was appointed to the CMF Board of Directors a few months ago as one of CMMC’s two representatives. “The CMF Board of Direc-tors have a huge responsibility in taking care of the money donors have given and determining the best use of those funds,” Alan said. “CMF has helped so many people through the years through its grant program.” He added that it would be hard to find someone in Central Montana that hasn’t benefited from those grant awards; whether it be to healthcare, essential

services, education, cultural or recreational projects.“CMF has such a talented board with directors representing

different viewpoints. I’ve always admired the success of the Foun-dation and how it’s grown, so I’m excited to have the opportunity to be a part of that.”

CMF President Dean Comes shares that enthusiasm. “Alan brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our board. His long-term commitment to Central Montana combined with his financial background make him a wonderful addition to the CMF Board of Directors. We couldn’t be more pleased to have him!”

Alan Aldrich brings decades of fiscal experience to CMF Board

Thank you to Fergus Federal Credit Union for color sponsorship!

Alan Aldrich

Fergus Federal Credit Union (FFCU) is the generous support-er of the full-color in this edition of The Roundup!

FFCU President Bob Bjelland said he is pleased to help pub-lish this Spring 2019 full-color, glossy newsletter. The Roundup is a joint publication of Central Montana Foundation (CMF) and Central Montana Medical Center Foundation (MCF). Bob is very familiar with the good work of both foundations, as he served on the CMF Board from 1988-2000 and has been on the MCF Advisory Board for the past eight years.

MCF Manager Ann Tuss and CMF Executive Director Carrie Mantooth both expressed their appreciation to FFCU for its sponsorship of the color newsletter and also for its unwavering financial support to local projects.

“Central Montanans are very supportive of their community,” said Bob, as evidenced by the strong financial support shown to local projects. FFCU shares in that commitment. “We give to a variety of local projects that help make our area an even bet-ter place to live,” he said. As a case in point, in just the last few months alone FFCU has financially supported the Creekside Marketplace & Pavilion and Lewistown Soccer Club’s capital

campaigns, Supplemental Meals in Lewistown Elementary Schools (SMILES), and Friends of the Pool.

“The Foundation has been tremendously successful and is unique in Montana,” Bob said. He pointed to CMF’s help to the 11 community endowments beneath its umbrella and the many scholarships and projects funded since it was founded in 1984. Bob is also proud of the accomplishments of MCF and its role in supporting healthcare at Central Montana Medical Cen-ter and the Central Montana region.

FFCU’s Brian Henderson serves on the CMF Board of Direc-tors and is also a member of the CMF Investment Committee. Bob said other FFCU staff members are also active volunteers with organizations throughout Central Montana.

Credit unions are a cooperative and as such, owned by its members. Credit unions operate on a non-for-profit basis. FFCU has been around since 1953 and is governed by a seven-person Board of Directors. Bob has been with FFCU for 35 years. He said service was the original premise of credit unions and service remains the driving force behind credit unions today. “Our only purpose is to serve our members, and we do it well.” v

All invited to CMF Annual Meeting May 28Central Montana Foundation (CMF) has granted

millions of funds to not-for-profit and tax-exempt organizations for medical, essential services, educa-tional, civic, cultural and recreational projects since it was founded in 1984.

All of the funding for CMF’s grant-making activi-ties is from the dividends and interest earned from its unrestricted permanent endowments. The principal remains untouched, providing a source of income into perpetuity!

There are 10 unrestricted endowments, the largest of which is the Mildred Bryte Memorial. Mildred died in 1997 and left the bulk of her more than $3 million estate to CMF. At least 60% of the Bryte income is used to fund major grants at the May annual meeting (see

invitation to the right). Income from the other 40% of the endowment funds annual gifts to the 11 rural endowments under CMF’s umbrella and a monthly al-location to the Pet Assistance League. Any remaining income is available for monthly distribution.

CMF’s Board of Directors consider major grant re-quests just once per year at the annual meeting, and each applicant will have opportunity to give a short presentation. Other agenda items include reports on 2018 activities and financials and a “Friend of the Foundation” award. The public is invited and encour-aged to attend.

For more information or to make reservations call CMF Executive Director Carrie Mantooth in the CMF office at 406.538.6130. v

Giving to CMMC is “all in the family” for the White family Long-time Central Montana Medical Center (CMMC)

employees Claude and Linda White grew up seeing gen-erosity modeled by their parents and have now become the role models.

Claude and Linda, along with their daughter, Ashley, are all employed by CMMC and all are giving back through payroll deduction.

Linda’s career with CMMC began in 1994 when she worked on the ambulance crew. She later moved into registration and admissions, but continues to serve as an EMT with CMMC Ambulance. Claude began his career in CMMC’s Skilled Nursing Center in 1992, and moved to the Ambulance crew in 1996 where he continues as an EMT.

Their daughter, Ashley, works at Judith Peak Rehab at CMMC and is also training as an EMT.

“CMMC has always treated us really good and we like our jobs,” Linda said. “It’s a family atmosphere here with caring people. Having CMMC here means people don’t have to go out of town for healthcare. That’s good for our community.”

In addition to payroll deduction in which the employee designates a fund with MCF for their giving, Central Mon-tana Medical Center Foundation (MCF) Manager Ann Tuss said CMMC has a mechanism to allow its employees to donate their paid time off (PTO) hours to MCF.

The employee designates the number of hours to do-nate, not to exceed 40 hours in a year, and the dollar value is converted into a cash gift to MCF, qualifying as a tax-de-ductible charitable donation.

“The Whites and many other employees’ dedication to CMMC is demonstrated in the great work that they do, and in their generosity to MCF,” Ann said. Ashley was taught so well by her parents that she signed up to give

CMMC employees Claude, Ashley and Linda White.

through payroll deduction right after she was hired a year ago. “I applaud this young generation who are trying to make a

living and still pay it forward.” Ann said employees’ devotion to the “Employee #GiveBack” campaign helps ensure that pa-tients receive the most advanced care, or that their colleague suffering from a personal crisis (HOPE fund) is given the help they so deserve.

MCF’s goal is to gain each employee’s faith and participation in the #GiveBack campaign, according to Ann. “If every CMMC employee #GaveBack even $5 each month, it would mean $43,000 per year!”

Every gift, large or small, given through payroll deduction shows CMMC employees’ dedication and commitment to be-ing part of a network of support for healthcare in Central Mon-tana. “We appreciate each and every one of them,” Ann said.

For more information about the #GiveBack campaign, call Ann at MCF at 406.535.6309. v

CMMC’s ER and Lab Donor Recognition wall repair is complete!Montana’s harsh climate wreaked havoc on Central Montana Medical Cen-

ter’s (CMMC) ER and Lab Donor Recognition pathway that was completed a few years ago, but repairs have been made and it’s more beautiful than ever.

The major donor casts were damaged and the statue had to be removed due to exterior cracks and the danger posed with young children swinging from it. The statue found a new home following a campus silent auction and proceeds went back to CMMC Foundation. A tree will take its place along with scrubs adorning the exterior of the donor recognition site, according to Medical Cen-ter Foundation Manager Ann Tuss. “Thankfully, the etched bricks remain in-tact because each brick is fired and able to withstand extreme temperatures and melting salts.” The attractive new Donor Recognition Wall will endure for generations to come and be lit during the evening hours.

During a recent telephone visit with one of the major ER and Lab donors Norman Asbjornson, Ann said he shared his thoughts about the changes. “It is extraordinaire. It’s very professionally and architecturally thought out with the donors in mind. I had the pleasure of visiting the site with my grandchildren and it was so nice to see all those bricks from community support. Well done!” v

working in defense plants, so children were expect-ed to pitch in to help their families. Norm didn’t earn allowance, but worked odd jobs to earn money. “I learned money management at an early age.”

After he graduated from Winifred High School in 1953, Norm enrolled at Montana State College (now Montana State University) with money he had saved and a gift from his parents. He led a frugal lifestyle and worked during the summer, but ran short on funds halfway through his sophomore year. His solution was to join the Army with the intention of returning to his education using the G.I. Bill.

After basic training, Norm went to wheel vehicle and tank mechanic schools and was sent to South Korea in 1955. The Korean Conflict was over, but the area was still a hotbed of skirmishes and Norm was just a mile from the North Korean border. Conditions were harsh and dangerous. They slept in tents and had only outdoor showers, so “we just didn’t shower from October-March. We were on the front lines sev-en days a week and there was a lot of tension. It was a long ways from Winifred.”

Norm said he was determined to get an education after his Army experience. “I got back to Montana on Jan. 3, 1957, spent a day with my parents and re-en-rolled at college on Jan. 5, matured and determined.” He graduated in 1960 with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Norm had two great job offers following gradu-ation; one from Boeing Aircraft and the other from American Standard. Even though the American Standard offer was less pay, Norm said taking the

position was “perhaps the smartest decision I ever made. It served me well and was a better fit.”

Over the next 12 years, Norm worked his way up in the company (which was later purchased by Sing-er) and lived in five different cities in the mid-west and east, working in heating and cooling manufac-turing. He took a position as vice president of Mam-moth in Minneapolis and was there 10 years.

Norm had established a solid reputation in the heating and cooling industry and was recruited to take a job with John Zink Company of Tulsa, Okla. It was a smaller company, but Norm was intrigued by the challenge to turn the company around. In 1988, he took a huge risk in buying the air conditioning division of the company.

When Norm was younger, he’d lost money in the stock market and decided to invest in farmland instead, purchasing a number of farms in Iowa. He found investors and leveraged his farm investments to buy the business and founded his own company, AAON, Inc.

He was in his 50s by then and at a time when he peers were thinking about retirement, but he had goals he wanted to achieve. Norm took a “big gam-ble” to buy the company and the pay-off has been huge. AAON, Inc. has three plants and employs more than 2,000 people today.

Norm credits his success to perseverance and delayed gratification. “I set a goal for myself and knew I was going to have to give up a lot of things to achieve it.” He said he lived below his means and reinvested money he made on his quest to be a top

executive. He said a year after taking the risk, he knew that

it was going to be successful and he continued to be very focused upon work. However, there came a point in time when he made the decision to turn some of that energy towards giving back to the peo-ple and places that contributed to his success.

Besides helping his hometown, Norm felt a debt of gratitude to his alma-mater and became involved with the MSU Foundation. He gave the largest do-nation in the history of Montana when he gave $50 million to Montana State University to build a 110,000 square foot new hall housing the engineer-ing and honors colleges. Asbjornson Hall opened last year.

Norm is 83 now and happy in his personal and business life. He enjoys being a father to his adult son and daughter and has four grandchildren. He still goes to work every day because he enjoys it and has no plans to retire as AAON Chairman.

He’s adamant that his financial success doesn’t make him a hero or a better person. “There are many people who are giving proportionately just as much, and their giving is just as meaningful.”

He added, “I enjoy giving. I really do. I had abso-lutely wonderful parents and Winifred did a lot for me. The children and grandchildren of the people there today are benefiting from how I was treated growing up. It’s a true statement that it’s more bless-ed to give than to receive.” v

Medical Center Foundation grants funds to local service projectsCentral Montana Medical Center Foundation (MCF) has helped fund a va-

riety of projects over the last few months to help local youth, women and emergency services.

CMMC Governing Board approved grants for the following:• Fergus High School After Prom Party was given a gift-in-kind of four

emergency vehicle and dorm safety kits to be used as prizes at the event.• Central Montana Youth Challenge was awarded $1,200 to help with ex-

One of its organizers, KellyAnne Terry, said the conference aims to connect and support women in areas of their lives to enable them to “lead from where they are.” This year’s conference theme was “Leaning to Change” and featured a panel of speakers on various topics and workshops. CMMC also sent 15 of its employ-ees to attend, including MCF Manager Ann Tuss. “The conference is such a neat event. The networking with other women, hearing the speakers and panelists - all provided a great opportunity to recharge and connect.”

Brendan Murphy was a highly respected and beloved community member in Winnett and is the epitome of a life well lived.

He was a teacher and coach before transition-ing to ranching the last 45 years in Winnett. He passed away on Jan. 21, 2019, and memorials are still pouring into Central Montana Founda-tion, primarily earmarked for Petroleum County Endowment and the fund to build a community center in Winnett.

“I have been so pleased with the memorial response for our Petroleum County Endowment fund. I’m equally pleased with how well this won-derful tool, that helps its community in so many ways, has grown over the years. Our community has stepped up to help in so many ways by using this tool,” said Joan, Brendan’s wife of 60 years. Joan has been an integral part of the Petroleum County Endowment Committee since it was found-ed in the late 1990s, and the Murphy’s have been generous and consistent with financial contributions.

Thousands of dollars in memorial gifts have been sent from people across Central Montana, the state and beyond, but the largest to date has been from Brendan’s family through his son, Brent and his employer Hewlett-Packard (HP). The family gave a generous gift through Brent, and the HP Foundation matched it dollar for dollar.

Brent is approaching his 27-year anniversary with HP in Boise, Idaho, with most of his career spent managing software application development and information

systems teams. His job has taken him throughout the world and Brent credits the leadership skills he developed growing up in Petroleum County with a large part of his success.

He’s proud to work for HP, and said one of the company’s guiding principles is to not only care about running a profitable business, but to also have an impact on communities its employees care about. The HP Foundation’s matching dona-tion program is an example of that commitment.

Brent and his wife, Danelle, live in Eagle, Idaho, a suburb of Boise. They have three adult children, Nate, Brayden and Korinn.

Brent said he and his brother, Brad, are blessed to be the sons of Brendan and Joan Murphy and to have been raised in Winnett. “I can’t think of a better way to grow up than living in a small community where everyone cares about each other and working hard to take care of each other is the norm.”

He said one of the most important gifts his parents gave them was “how to give back and how to treat others with respect, dignity and care. I feel profoundly fortunate to have parents that valued this small town attribute and it’s something I draw upon in my own life daily.”

Brendan died at the age of 81 after an extended illness. He was born in Helena on July 22, 1937, but raised in Roundup. He spent many hours working with his

When a long-time Judith Gap community member, Anne Benson, provided an estate gift to Judith Gap Community Methodist Church in about 1997, their leadership decided to put it into a permanent endowment fund with Central Mon-tana Foundation (CMF).

Church member Dean Peterson was on the Judith Gap Endowment Committee, which has a fund with CMF, and understood that a permanent endowment could turn the bequest into a source of perpetual funding. “I knew we could invest it with CMF and that has worked out very well for us,” Dean said.

The principal of a permanent endowment remains intact and the dividends and interest earned are spendable. The church has been able to use those earnings for building improvements through the years. “It’s our rainy day fund,” Dean said.

In 2017 they withdrew $35,000 from the fund for a major project to install handicap accessible restrooms and insulate the entryway, and they’ve also tapped into the funds for sidewalks around

the church to help prevent water leakage into the basement.

Dean and his wife, Trudi of the E.L. Peterson Ranch, said the church is important to its congre-gants and to the Judith Gap community as it has a dual purpose as a community center. They have a spacious kitchen and are glad to share it with the other church in town and the community for vari-ous functions. Funeral dinners, wedding and baby showers, card playing, Vacation Bible School, ex-tra classroom space for the school when needed, and other events are regular occurences.

The church also regularly provides sanctuary to stranded motorists when the notorious winter wind and snowstorms result in road closure of Highway 191. They’ve had up to 20 people spend the night at the church and keep a stock of pan-cake mix, syrup and coffee onhand for visitors.

Wheatland County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch keeps their phone number handy; just this win-ter Judith Gap Community Methodist Church has housed overnight guests including stranded travelers, a Montana Highway Patrolman and a crew from Malmstrom Air Force Base. There are no

sleeping quarters, but the church is kept heated and pad-ded pews and carpet provide comfort for weary travelers.

“The Judith Gap church is one of five churches that have permanent endowments with CMF,” said CMF Executive Di-rector Carrie Mantooth. “Judith Gap Community Methodist Church is a great example of how having a perpetual source of income is good stewardship and planning.” v

uncles, Nick and George, on the Rath’s family ranch and his love of ranching continued throughout his life. He graduated from Roundup High School in 1955 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts and Physical Education from Mon-tana State College (now MSU) in Bozeman in 1959.

He met Joan at college and they were married in 1959; beginning an enduring love story and part-nership. The couple both taught school, beginning their careers in Rigby, Idaho. Brendan also began a life-long love of coaching basketball there, and went on to teach and coach in Plevna, Columbus, Stanford and Chinook. He received many awards for his coaching and led four teams to a state tour-nament with one winning the Championship. He also spent many years as a referee for high school basketball and football.

The Murphy’s first son, Brad, was born in 1964 and Brent was born in 1966. In 1974, the family started a new chapter by moving to Winnett to help operate and manage the Hill Family Ranch, where Joan was raised. The whole family pitched in to work side by side. The family said Brendan loved the variety of operating a ranch and credited his dedication, hard work and passion for its success.

Brendan made his family his priority through-out his life, and he enjoyed being a husband, fa-ther, grandparent and great-grandparent. Brendan also served his community well. He volunteered in many capacities and also served 18 years as a Pe-troleum County Commissioner.

Petroleum County has the distinction of having

the lowest population in Montana, with less than 500 people, but its residents work together to ac-complish common goals. The Petroleum County Endowment has helped fund many of the proj-ects important to area residents, and memorials for Brendan will continue that good work.

For more information about giving to Petro-leum County Endowment or the campaign for the Winnett Community Center, contact Gari King at 406.429.5821. v
