Roxana Marsh Characterization
• Purpose - To determine the chemical, physical and toxicological characteristics. . .
• Goals - Collect data of sufficient quality and quantity to:– Determine if Remediation is required;– If Remediation is required, have sufficient data
to make decisions on scope and extent;– Develop Restoration Plan for Marsh
Scope of Workfor
Characterization of Roxana Marsh
Grand Calumet River Restoration Fund Council
August 2001
Roxana Marsh Characterization
• Review of Previous Sampling and Analyses
• HNTB, 1989,1991 - probes of marsh give rough estimate of sediment depth and volume;
• URS Greiner Woodward Clyde, 1999 - Surface & Core samples for Chemistry & Toxicity
Sampling
• Surficial and Core Sample - maxium of 60 samples from up to 20 locations
• Utility Survey to identify pipelines, utilities
• Field Sampling & Analyses Plan – Sampling, Health & Safety, Quality
Assurance/Quality Control
Characterization
• - Horizontal & Vertical Control
• - Chemical Analyses– Analyses for PCBs, Organochlorine Pesticides,
PAHs, Mercury, Metals, Oil & Grease, Total Organic Carbon, Acid volatile sulfides/simultaneously extracted metals, grain size
– Reporting Limits– QA/QC Requirements
Characterization
• - Toxicity Analysis– 28-day survival and growth test using Hyalella azteca (or other appropriate organism)
– USGS, BRD Columbia, Mo
• - Data Validation
• - Reports, Schedules, Coordination
