THE THISTLE
NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2014
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – Tom Semanyk
As your new President I will do my best to help this Branch succeed. There are many new endeavours in the
future to make this Branch successful. I would like to thank all for their past and present contributions and I
know we have an excellent Executive to carry us through the next two years.
Decoration Day in June was a great success even though the weather did not cooperate. My many thanks to all
that marched and carried flags and to Ray Pearse for the great service. Again thanks for all your help to make
the day a great success.
Legion Week in September is quickly approaching. We have events planned so please come out and support
your Legion.
Again this year we are looking forward to Remembrance Day on November 11 and, as the year passes, the
President’s Levy on January 1.
If you have any ideas or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Again my thanks to all that have helped
make our Legion a success.
LADIES AUXILIARY – MARIA GEORGE
This is all new to me, I have a lot to learn and I will need all the help I can get. My hope is to make a difference
this year, whereby the Ladies Auxiliary and the Branch will become team builders and successful entrepreneurs
in order to do what is best for our Veterans. I have always believed that, that is what I believed the Legion is
all about, and that is why I joined. We have to give back and in order to do that people, (members) have to
join in and help in order to do that. My goal is to canvas for more volunteers so that we can do more functions,
make more money for the Legion so that no Veterans goes unaided. So come on folks and help us out.

Branch when requested to do so by any family member of a Comrade. When possible, I participate in other

*******************************************
DECORATION DAY and D-DAY 70th Anniversary
Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Belsyde Cemetery
On Sunday, June 8th
members of the Fergus Legion Branch 275 and the community remembered comrades
fallen with the annual Centre Wellington and Legion Decoration Day. Decoration Day is the Sunday closest to
D-Day which is June 6th
and this year the 70th
Anniversary of D-Day. The local event was one of many special
events planned by Legions all over the country.
The Legion Honour Guard was piped into the Belsyde Cemetery by the Fergus Pipe Band and greeted by about
40 people. Master of Ceremonies was Ray Pearse with President of Branch 275, Tom Semanyk, and Centre
Wellington Mayor, Joanne Ross-Zui, participating in the service. Prayers were said and hymns sung lead by the
Fergus Brass Band. The service involves the whole community. Carnations were available to lay on the graves
of loved ones and/or veterans to honour them.
The little dampness in the air did nothing to dampen the memories and spirit of those in attendance. We
sincerely thank all those who participated in this very special service.

POPPY REPORT – Ray Pearse – 519-843-5297
The Poppy Campaign in 2013 was very successful with almost $40,000.00 being donated by the citizens of
Fergus. The Army and Air Cadets did a great job of canvassing during the Campaign and their assistance
serving the Remembrance Dinner was very much appreciated. We extend thanks to the great response from our
members who gave their time canvassing during the week and on weekends.
The following received donations from the 2013 Poppy Fund:
Air, Army and Navy Cadets;
Legion Bursary Fund;
Charitable Foundations;
Homeless Veterans Fund;
Groves Memorial Community Hospital
Belwood Lodge & Camp;
Parkwood Hospital, Veterans Section, London, ON
and many other organizations.
We make every effort to give support where needed and when requested.
The Annual Poppy Campaign will commence on Friday, October 31 and
will run until Monday, November 10. We ask all members who are able
to give two (2) hours of their time to canvass during the Poppy Campaign.

participate in the 2014 Remembrance Contest. We thank the school staff for their time and effort in assisting
with the program. In September I will be visiting each school with the information regarding entering the 2014

can contact me individually.
CANTEEN REPORT- Mel Runnalls- 519-787-2333
I’d like to thank Comrade Greg Manion for getting me off on the right track in this new position for me. We
did an inventory count the end of May with Chief Bar Steward Karen Small and it gave me a better idea of the
procedure. Comrades the Club Bar is providing great service due to the always hard work of the Bar Stewards
Karen, Heather, Merv, Sara and fill-ins Marilyn and Terry. We have been conducting bimonthly inventories. In
most cases the count has been in line except for the draft beer count which is in review as I write this message.
Remember Comrades the Club Room is available for all members at no cost for small private functions or rent
the Main Hall at member’s rate. I’d like to congratulate all the members who helped revamping the appearance
of the Club Room, it looks just great. I’d also like to thank all the Smart Serve volunteers who work the bar in
the Main Hall.
HALL RENTAL AND CATERING REPORT- Mel Runnalls- 519-787-2333
Being new to this position, I’m looking forward to expanding the awareness to our community and our
members of all the great things our Legion offers pertaining to the complete Hall Rental facilities and Catering
Package. Our Hall can accommodate up to 330 guests and offers many advantages, including fully licensed bar
and Smart Serve Staff, it is a handicap accessible building, wireless Internet and microphone and podium,
display tables and full kitchen facilities. For weddings etc. we offer a decorative curtain along the Main Hall
Page 7 of 16
wall. So if you’re planning a Wedding, Stag and Doe, Birthday, Anniversary, Retirement or Business event the
Fergus Legion would be pleased to accommodate your needs. For further information and pricing, contact our
Chief Bar Steward, Karen Small, during normal Legion hours at 519-843-2345.
PUBLIC RELATIONS REPORT- Mel Runnalls- 519-787-2333
I’d like to thank Comrade Brian Bielby for the great job he has done for the past years. I’m also very
appreciative for all the help he and Comrade Greg Manion have given me as a rookie taking over such an
important position.
The Royal Canadian Legion’s mandate through Public Relations is that an exerted effort is made to provide
accurate and up to date information to its members, the public and the news media, such as Legion programs,
policies, activities. Even though we have a great relationship with the local media and our Web Site Manager, it
is very important the Executive and all the membership continually inform the public all the good things the
Legion does and offers to the community. Therefore I ask the membership of the Fergus Legion to be
Ambassadors and continually promote this excellent organization. The Legion magazine is a great information
piece. I suggest that after you’ve read your issue that you drop it off at any of the businesses in town, like your
doctor or dentist offices, hospitals. or any facility that has waiting rooms so the public can read and be
informed.
TRAINING/ORGANIZING & DEVELOPMENT REPORT – Greg Manion – 705-429-2619
We are now moving into a new two year term with some new members sitting in chairs on the Branch
Executive. It will be very important that they attend seminars related to the chairs, as well as Zone and District
Conferences. The valuable information that is gained at these events helps the executive in the continued
growth of our Branch.
The Seminars and Conferences are open to all members of the Branch. Attending these will help our
membership better understand how the Branch operates and what the Executive can do for the Branch. I am
looking forward to working with the Executives and Members of the Branch in my new role as TOD Chairman.
NEVADA REPORT – Ray Pearse – 519-843-5297
The Branch raises funds to support community sports and events throughout the year. The Nevada Committee
and the Branch Executive review the many requests from the various organizations requesting financial
assistance. Following are some of the groups who received support from the Branch:

effective to repair. The roof has been replaced over our patio with help supplied by our members. Thanks to
those who did the work.

The Les Willis Memorial Crib Tournament winners were Trudy Melanson and Don Van Wyck.
TRACK & FIELD
The Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Command runs a track and field program offering summer and winter
meets for both genders 17 years of age and under. Athletes compete at the Zone and District levels, progressing
to Provincial and National levels. We would encourage any youth in our area to participate in these events.
District “C” Track & Field Event in Hespeler on June 29th
was attended by Stephanie Benninger from
our area.
Of interest is Rebecca Herman a 15-year-old local teen from Collingwood who qualified at the District E meet
held in Midland in June meeting the national standard set by Athletics Canada for shot put and javelin for her
age group. She placed first in discus with a throw of 26.65 to qualify for the Provincial meet.
The Provincial Meet was in Brampton on July 11th
and 12th
. She competed in the Provincial Meet on July 11th
and placed 3rd
in the three-kilogram midget girls’ shot put with a 12.48 meter effort. In the 500-gram midget
girls’ javelin she finished 4th
with a best throw of 30.34m, just 11 cm out of 3rd
place. She was 5th
in the one-
kilogram midget girls’ discus at 26.21m.
The Legion’s National Track and Field Championships for youth is scheduled for mid-August in Langley, B.C.
It is hoped the youth in our area will be encouraged to enter the program as Rebecca Herman did.

At present we have 449 members. We do strive all year to promote membership to keep our Branch
functioning. Out of each membership fee a per capita tax rate of $32.37 is paid to Dominion Command plus
$2.00 per member to Ontario Command. A proposal for a $5.00 increase to Dominion Command was defeated
at the Convention in Winnipeg in June of this year.

Scottish Festival Booth – Doreen Flockhart
With the help of Fred and Susan Hiller, Conrad Sawyer and Mel Runnalls, Merv Fisher and I set up a booth at
the Scottish Festival. We had many visitors to the booth and handed out literature to young people re the
Remembrance Poster and Essay Contest, applications were picked up and 54 people entered the draw. The
book “We’ll Never Forget” was won by Rob Galloway and the “Remembering Them – History of Fergus
Legion” book was won by Savanna Sweet. We do feel we brought awareness of the Legion and the work it
does to many visitors to the Festival and it is a worthwhile project to be carried on. Jean Miso, author of the
book “We’ll Never Forget” joined us on Saturday afternoon and did a book signing which created interest. Jean
Miso donates a portion of the proceeds from her book sales to the Legion Poppy Fund.
Thank you to the Fergus Scottish Festival for providing the space and Conrad for providing the canopy.

the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing,
and the worst thing you can do is nothing.” Theodore Roosevelt

On Wednesday, November 5, 2014, the Wellington County Museum and Archives, as they did last year, will be
holding a community Remembrance Ceremony to commemorate the fallen soldiers from Wellington County
who served in WW1, WW11, Korea and Afghanistan. All Legions in the area will be participating. Our
Branch will participate in a Colour Guard. The grounds will open at 10:00 a.m.to view the hill. Refreshments
will be served after the Ceremony. Unfortunately I am unable to attend but hope we have a good turnout for the
Colour Guard.
We will also require a Colour Guard for Decoration Day in 2015.
