National Night Out — Meeting Old Friends & Making New Ones Summer Home Sales Hot as the WeatherBy Leanne Reynolds

During the past four months, home sales in the RCPOA area of homes continued to mirror the nationwide trend ― a continued low inventory of homes for sale creating higher prices for sold homes. As of August 1, there are only two homes for sale in our neighborhood. Since our last newsletter of April 12, four homes are in escrow and another four homes sold. The most active sellers are relocating Baby Boomers as they enter retirement and older residents leaving their long-term home. Generation Y are becoming first-time home buyers making their shift from renting. The impact of rising interest rates and the outcome of our Presidential election are just two factors which have the power to alter our current sellers market in Glendale and across the country.

Help Beautify the Entrance to Our Neighborhood As many of you have noticed, the triangle island between Royal & Mountain went through quite the change. The RCPOA has asked the City if there was a possibility of gaining temporary stewardship of that triangle, so that we can plant there to make it beautiful again. It seems this may be a possibility. If you are interested in being part of a beautification committee that can plant at that triangle and check on it from time-to-time, please contact: [email protected]. If we get enough volunteers interested, we may pursue this further. The city will continue to water that triangle so volunteers won’t need to.

Special thanks to the following for donations toward National Night Out: Vahe & Armine Hacopian, Bruce & Debbie Hinckley,Paul & Colleen Johnson, Paul & Silviya Karapetian, Richard & Carol Lee, Kym & Linda Murphy, Mike & Wendy Myers, Ross & Armine Perian, Joe & Beth Volpe, Glenn Webb & Lyn Foster, Nick & Cece Friesen.

An Enjoyable and Informative Evening Neighborhood Watch & Crime Prevention Meeting On a lovely evening in late June, RCPOA hosted a Neighborhood Watch and Crime Prevention Meeting in a beautiful backyard on Majestic Way. Nearly 100 people attended. The discussion was led by four officers from the Glendale Police Department. Lt. Oscar Rodriguez, Officer James Colvin, Officer Ade Chung and Det. Shaun Carlson all volunteered to take part in our meeting -- on their day off. Here is a recap of some of the information they shared with us.

Over Father’s Day weekend, the City of Glendale experienced a series of residential burglaries with several of them happening while the residents were home and asleep. (A residential burglary into an occu-pied residence is called a “hot prowl”). On the Sunday of that weekend, just before midnight, the Glendale police received a call that a male was attempting to break into a home in the 1300 block of Orange Grove Avenue. The male was located and arrested after a short foot pursuit. He was identified as 20-year-old Jonathan Baquiran. He was found to be in possession of stolen property linked to several of the burglaries that had occurred over the weekend. Detectives determined that Baquiran had committed a majority of the recent burglaries, some in the Royal Canyon neighborhood. They also found that 20-year-old Zyryll Triunfo of Glendale had been working with Baquiran to commit the burglaries. Triunfo was also located and arrested.

Just over a week after Father’s Day, two masked and hooded men tied up a woman’s hands and robbed her of $70 in her home on the 2400 block of Flintridge Drive. They entered her home during the afternoon through a rear sliding glass door that was left ajar. No arrests have yet been made.

Recently there has been a rash of unlocked cars being rifled through in our neighborhood. Thingstaken have been of small value, such as change and a 12-pack of beer. At our recent Neighborhood Watch Meeting, the police pointed out that, if a car is unlocked and entered into, the offense is merely a“citable offense” and carries no jail time. However, if a car is locked and broken into (with the intent to

steal the vehicle or some property inside it), the offense is a misdemeanor or a felony and can result in jail time. Petty thieves avoid this. So LOCK YOUR CARS or KEEP THEM IN A LOCKED GARAGE!

Car Security: ˖“Lock it, Hide it, Keep it.” Secure your car and re-move all valuables every time you park. Tips for the Home: ˖ Install and use alarm systems. ˖ Have good night lighting around the home. Motion detector lights are highly recommended, especially for driveways, backyards, entryways, corners, decks/patios and pool areas. Light timers are also highly recommended. ˖ Keep exterior lights out of easy reach to prevent them from being unscrewed. ˖ Don’t keep a safe in your garage. ˖ Signs help. “Home Alarm,” “Beware of Dog,” etc. ˖ Have gates with locks to help prevent entry into backyards. ˖ Purchase window and slider hardware to make it more difficult to enter through a window. ˖ Maintain thorny plants beneath lower level windows to make approach difficult. ˖ Don’t “telegraph” behavior. (Don’t do the same thing at the same time each day.) ˖ Log all serialized property and photograph all valuable jewelry. ˖ Ask neighbors to watch for suspicious activity.

Police stressed that one of the things most helpful for them to solve crimes is the awareness of citizens and their reports to police. Their arrests of the “Hot Prowl Burglars” was the result of a call from a suspi-cious neighbor. They also solved another home inva-sion robbery (forcing a homeowner to open a garage safe) based on a tip from a suspicious neighbor. They advise us to trust our instincts and not to be shy about calling them. Also ... let neighbors know on Nextdoor.com.

When in doubt, call 911. Non-emergency number (which will also go to dispatch):
