Earlier this year, the Business Secretary described the automotive industry as “one of the brightest stars in the constellation of British business”. Some 800,000 British people rely on this sector for their livelihoods and last year automotive business increased its turnover to a record £69.5 billion, contributing £15.5 billion to the UK economy. Vehicle and engine production will reach record levels and that growth will be profitable, with productivity outperforming other industry sectors and delivering twice the added value per employee than the national average.

British automotive products are in demand worldwide, with the UK steadily climbing the global manufacturing rankings – Britain is now the third biggest European car manufacturer and 14th in the world. We export cars, engines and commercial vehicles to more than 100 countries, and the quality of our product and engineering prowess is opening up new export markets, attracting significant inward investment amounting to £8 billion since 2013.

For a small island nation, we punch above our weight on the world stage. But to remain internationally competitive, we must look at macro-trends shaping our world – the economic policies of emerging markets, evolving consumer demographics and new connected technologies. We must understand how these trends affect our business and build a robust, future-proof industry that will continue to innovate, grow and deliver.

There are challenges to overcome: access to skills is critical for industry to stay at the cutting edge of technology and innovation; the EU referendum could have a dramatic effect on UK automotive’s attractiveness as an investment destination; and, most recently, questions remain over effectiveness of emissions testing which bears ever less relevance to real world performance, albeit for sound scientific reasons.

Restoring consumer trust in our sector will be a test of our resilience, but we must not allow recent events to blight the extraordinary technological progress that has been made.

Today, however, is about the bigger picture; the long-term global economic and societal situation. Our speakers will share their experiences and insight about emerging trends, challenges, threats and opportunities.

I hope you will take away ideas and inspiration to debate within your own businesses. Thanks to all our speakers for generously sharing their time and expertise and thank you all for attending the seventh International Automotive Summit and contributing your own thoughts.
