2 At close range, a single torpedo was fired at HMS Aboukir by German submarine U-9. The torpedo broke the ship's back, and she sank within 20 minutes with the loss of

527 men. The captains of HMS Cressy and HMS Hogue thought Aboukir had struck a floating mine and came forward to assist her. They stood by and began to pick up

survivors. At this point, U-9 fired two torpedoes into Hogue, mortally wounding that ship. As Hogue sank, the captain of Cressy realised that the squadron was being attacked

by a submarine, and tried to flee. However, U-9 fired two more torpedoes into Cressy, and sank her as well. The entire battle had lasted less than two hours, and cost the

British three warships, 62 officers and 1,397 ratings.

3 While escorting the Grand Fleet during a sweep, the new flotilla leader HMS Hoste (G90) suffered a steering engine failure. She was ordered back to Scapa escorted by the

destroyer HMS Negro. The weather worsened and when the temporary repairs to her steering failed Hoste sheered to starboard and the Negro, only 400yds astern couldn’t

avoid and ran into her aft, the collision knocked two depth charges off Hoste, the resulting explosions blew in the bottom of Negro, which sank quickly and seriously

damaged Hoste. Negro lost 5 officers (including her Capt and Doctor) and 45 men (Hoste lost 4 men).

4 During the Battle of Jutland a shell penetrated the front of HMS Invincible's 'Q' turret, blew off the roof and detonated the mid-ships magazines, which blew the ship in half.

The explosion possibly ignited 'A' and 'X' magazines. Of her complement, 1,026 officers and men were killed; there were only 6 survivors.

5 A powerful internal explosion ripped Bulwark apart at 07:50 on 26 November 1914 while she was moored at Number 17 buoy in Keyhole Reach, 4 nautical miles west of

Sheerness in the estuary of the River Medway. Out of her complement of 750, no officers and only 14 sailors survived, two of whom subsequently died of their injuries in

hospital. Most of the survivors were seriously injured. On 29 November 1914 divers sent to find the wreck reported that the ship's port bow as far aft as the sick bay had been

blown off by the explosion and lay 50 ft east of the mooring. The starboard bow lay 30 ft further away. The remainder of the ship had been torn apart so violently that no

other large portions of the wreck could be found.

6 HMS Clan McNaughton was a 4,985 ton passenger cargo vessel, built in 1911 and requisitioned November 1914 from the Clan Line Steamers Ltd, Glasgow, becoming an

Armed Merchant Vessel. It is thought that Clan McNaughton foundered in a severe gale off the north coast of Ireland. Last heard from on 3rd February 1915, wreckage was

later found in the area and Clan McNaughton was presumed sunk with the 281 strong crew.

7 Built 1891 as a first class passenger ship named the Cheshire and later used during the Boer War as a troopship. In 1910, the Cheshire was sold renamed Seang Choon. In

1915 the Seang Choon became a British army troopship, afterwards a hospital ship and took part in the Dardanelles campaign. On the 10th July 1917, in Bantry Bay on the

South Coast of Ireland, whilst on a voyage from Sydney to London, she was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-87. Nineteen lives were lost.

HMS Russell was steaming off Malta early on the morning of 27 April 1916 when she struck two sea mines that had been laid by the German submarine U-73. A fire broke

out in the after part of the ship and the order to abandon ship was passed; after an explosion near the after 12-inch (305-mm) turret, she took on a dangerous list. However,

she sank slowly, allowing most of her crew to escape. A total of 27 officers and 98 ratings were lost.

HMS Hampshire was present at the Battle of Jutland and a few days later was sailing to Russia with the Secretary of State for War, Field Marshal Lord Kitchener, when

she is believed to have struck a mine laid by a German submarine. The detonation had holed the cruiser between bows and bridge, and the lifeboats were smashed against the

side of the ship by the heavy seas when they were lowered. About 15 minutes after the explosion, Hampshire sank by the bows. Of 600 personnel aboard only 12 men on

Carley floats managed to reach the shore. Lord Kitchener and his staff were lost.

13

Originally HMS Royalist a Satellite-class corvette, hulked as a depot ship in 1900 renamed HMS Colleen in 1913 and transferred to the Irish Free State in 1923. She was

scrapped in 1950.

14

HMS Vanguard fought in the battle of Jutland without damage or loss of life. Just before midnight on 9 July 1917 at Scapa Flow, Vanguard suffered an explosion, probably

caused by an unnoticed stokehold fire heating cordite stored against an adjacent bulkhead in one of the two magazines which served the amidships gun turrets 'P' and 'Q'. She

sank almost instantly, killing 842 men; there were only two survivors. In terms of loss of life, the destruction of the Vanguard remains the most catastrophic accidental

explosion in the history of the UK, and one of the worst accidental losses of the Royal Navy.

17

Saw service at the Battle of Jutland. One of 2 town-class cruisers originally ordered for the Greek Navy but purchased by the British government in 1915. The ships

differed from standard British practice: Main armament was new 5.5 inch gun, which was lighter than the standard 6 inch gun and fired a lighter shell which gave an

increased fire rate with little loss of hitting power. Scrapped in 1921.

Her masts hit the mud of the sea bottom, and her upturned hull remained visible for many months until it was finally submerged when her foremast collapsed during a storm.

27

HMS Natal assigned to the 2nd Cruiser Squadron of the Grand Fleet but did not participate in any battles. She sunk by a series of violent explosions which tore through the

rear part of the ship and she capsized in 5 minutes on the afternoon of 30th December. 421 crew, visitors and civilians were killed with some 400 surviving. Three QARNNS

Nursing Sisters also perished (OK Rowlett, EM Elvens & CM Edwards). Some thought at the time she had been torpedoed by a German submarine or detonated a submarine-

laid mine, but later examination of the wreckage revealed that the explosions were internal.

HMS Alcantara an ocean liner converted to an armed merchant cruiser in 1914. The German raider Greif was disguised as the Norwegian Rena out of Tonsberg when

intercepted by Alcantara on the morning of 29th February 1916. Alcantara closed to 2,000 yards and slowed to lower a boarding cutter when Grief hoisted the German battle

ensign, increased speed, and opened fire. Alcantara returned fire and the range was never more than 3,000 yards. One of grief's torpedoes detonated amidships against

Alcantara and one of Alcantara's shells exploded the ready ammunition for Grief's after gun. Both ships lost speed. Grief's crew abandoned ship 40 minutes after opening

fire. Alcantara sank first, with the loss of 72 men. The C-class light cruiser HMS Comus and M-class destroyer HMS Munster then arrived to sink the stationary Grief and

rescue 210 German survivors.

On January 13th 1915 Viknor set sail from Londonderry in Ireland, and headed out into the Irish Sea to make for her patrol area. On board her were 22 Officers and 273

Ratings mostly from the Royal Navy Reserve. The weather was bad and the sea was very choppy indeed. HMS Viknor never reached her patrol zone, a search of the area was

made and scattered wreckage was found in the sea. There were no survivors. Mystery surrounds her sinking, it was thought at first that a U Boat had sunk her, however

German records showed that no such craft were in the area until the end of January. It was officially recorded that HMS Viknor has been destroyed by an enemy mine,

somewhere of Tory Island and that no one had survived.

HMS Hogue, along with HMS Cressy went to the aid of HMS Aboukir who they thought had hit a floating mine, when indeed it had been hit by a German U-boat, U-9. As

they stood by and began to pick up survivors, torpedoes from U-9 struck Hogue and she then sank. The Surgeon and 2 Sick Berth staff were rescued. The entire battle had

lasted less than two hours, and cost the British three warships, 62 officers and 1,397 ratings.

HMS Princess Irene, an ocean liner built in 1914 and requisitioned by the RN on completion and converted to an auxiliary minelayer. Moored in Saltpan Reach on the

Medway estuary, whilst being loaded with mines, she exploded and disintegrated. The explosion was larger than that which had destroyed HMS Bulwark six months earlier,

although the loss of life was less. A total of 352 people were killed, including 273 officers and men, and 76 dockyard workers who were on board Princess Irene. The sole

survivor from Princes Irene was a stoker, who suffered severe burns. Three of her crew had a lucky escape as they were ashore at the time.

Q-ships, also known as Q-boats, decoy vessels, special service ships, or mystery ships, were heavily armed merchant ships with concealed weaponry, designed to lure

submarines into making surface attacks. This gave Q-ships the chance to open fire and sink them. The basic ethos of every Q-ship was to be a wolf in sheep's clothing. They

were used by the Royal Navy during the First & Second World Wars as a countermeasure against German U-boats and Japanese submarines.

40

The White Star liner RMS Laurentic was in Montreal when the Great War began and was immediately commissioned as a troop transport for the Canadian Expeditionary

Force. In 1915 she converted to an armed merchant cruiser. On 25th January 1917 she struck a mine off Lough Swilly on the northern coast of County Donegal, Ireland and

On 12 January 1918, Opal joined her sister ship Narborough and the light cruiser Boadicea in a night patrol to hunt German auxiliary warships suspected to be laying

mines on the Scottish coast. By 17:30, the weather had deteriorated to such an extreme degree that the destroyers were in danger of swamping and foundering and visibility

was near zero. Fearing that her companions might sink, Boadicea ordered Opal and Narborough back to Scarpa Flow while she continued alone. For the next four hours,

Opal regularly sent reports indicating her course and intention to return, but at 21:27, a garbled message stating have run aground was received, followed by silence. The

weather was so atrocious that no vessels could be despatched until the following morning, and it was two days before Opal was found, battered, broken and empty on the

Clett of Crura. Narborough was found in a similar position nearby. Both wrecks were abandoned and broken up by the sea over the next few weeks taking the bodies of both

crews (91 from Narborough and 96 from Opal), bar the single survivor, with them.

MFA Ermine was a steamer which plied between Glasgow and Dublin in pre-war days carrying 300 saloon passengers and 700 cattle. Used as troopship to France and then

carrying troops into Salonika and casualties away (She logged in all about 200,000 passengers and 3,000 horses). She is believed to have struck a mine leaving Salonika

harbour (today called Thessalonika) and sank in two and half minutes with the loss of 60 lives including 23 naval personnel. 43

HMS Cressy, along with HMS Hogue, went to the aid of HMS Aboukir who they thought had hit a floating mine, when indeed it had been hit by a German U-boat, U-9. As

they stood by and began to pick up survivors, two torpedoes from U-9 struck Cressy and she then sank. The entire battle had lasted less than two hours, and cost the British

three warships, 62 officers and 1,397 ratings.
