Introduction

The Royal Northern College of Music is a leading international conservatoire located in the heart of Manchester, with a reputation for attracting talented musicians from all over the world.

The RNCM is in its fifth decade, but with a rich history spanning back to 1893 when Sir Charles Hallé founded the Royal Manchester College of Music. In 1973 this institution merged with the Northern School of Music, and theRNCM was born.

Today, the College is a thriving conservatoire with around 340 teaching staff and 880 students from almost 60 countries. Each year, RNCM leavers go on to forge successful careers all over the world, forming a global network of more than 6000 alumni.

I am very proud of our family here at the RNCM and the enviable position we hold within the music education sector.

In its 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework, the Higher Education Funding Council for England acknowledged us as ‘outstanding’, awarding the College its highest Gold ranking; a significant achievement that complements our current position as the UK’s leading music college for Research. We have also been awarded a substantial grant for digital innovation which will see major technological developments over the coming years, so it is a very exciting time to be joining our community.

We understand how important it is to have all the necessary information before you embark on the next stage of your musical journey. The RNCM prospectus outlines the exceptional tuition that we provide on our undergraduate and graduate programmes, as well as offering a glimpse of the unrivalled and diverse performance opportunities available to our students every year. If you would like to see first-hand what life at a conservatoire is really like, we would be delighted to welcome you for an Open Day, individual tour or to simply enjoy one of our many concerts and events.

We look forward to seeing you at the RNCM very soon.

What our alumni say

18

Sir John Tomlinson

Sally Beamish(viola, 1978 – now a composer)‘The highlight of my time at the RNCM was being involved in the opera productions, which led to a lifelong fascination with opera. I also had the opportunity to write pieces for different occasions, recitals etc., and to participate in all sorts of masterclasses as accompanist. There was always so much going on. My violin and viola lessons with Bronislaw Gimpel, Patrick Ireland and Atar Arad were wonderfully stimulating – and then there was all the other stuff, which has shaped my career asa composer.’

Christine Rice(mezzo-soprano, 1998)‘The RNCM was absolutely pivotal in my life. I was allocated the most brilliant and gifted singing teacher, was furnished with my first experiences singing lead operatic roles, and supported during my initial forays into the professional world. Three cheers for the RNCM!’

Sir John Tomlinson(bass, 1970s) ‘I have been associated with the College since 1966 when, as a young engineering undergraduate, I pinned on the noticeboard a card with the words ‘singing lessons required’. The next day Patrick McGuigan replied and I began singing lessons with him which led to me becoming a full-time student. Since then it’s been my pleasure to return at regular intervals for recitals and masterclasses and more recently to come and work with the students for a couple of days each term. Now I am privileged to be President of the RNCM and as such it is an honour for me to continue my association with this great institution.’

Peter Manning(violin, 1980)‘The deep cultural arts evolution of Manchester over the last 150 years has seen music and the arts mirror the great advances of the city, and the RNCM sits at the heart of both present and future development success.’

Alexandra Dariescu(piano 2008)‘I loved the RNCM so much. Without all of the help and support I wouldn’t be where I am today.’

Ewa Struskinska(conducting, 2007)‘RNCM – a truly enjoyable, memorable and fruitful time of my life that gave me a great start to my conducting career.’

Graduate employability100% of RNCM graduates are in employment or further education six months after graduation (DLHE Survey 2014-15 and 2015-16)

For more graduate profiles and to see an extensive and constantly evolving list of our graduate destinations, visit www.rncm.ac.uk/alumni.

Tom Harrold(composition, 2015)‘The RNCM has undoubtedly had the biggest impact on my career: its fantastic teaching, extraordinary sense of community, and fabulous opportunities on offer all came together to give me what I believe to be one of the best music college experiences.’

Les Neish(tuba 2005)‘Learning from world-class educators and making great friends along the way, the RNCM was the perfect place to start my career. Travelling around the world as a musician is a wonderful thing and I am so grateful that the RNCM helped me to realise this ambition.’

‘Manchester’s got an amazing music and arts scene. Because I come from a small town, I would never dream of having all this at my disposal. So it’s amazing. Principal Study in: Bass Guitar Drum Kit Guitar Piano/Keyboard Vocals

Join the revered list of musicians made in Manchester, one of the true engine rooms of popular music.

As the UK’s only four-year BMus in Popular Music, this programme provides intensive training for instrumentalists and singers with a high level of performing ability who intend to work as freelance musicians, bands and artists in the popular music industry.

Musicians are recruited for the Popular Music programme in equal numbers for each Principal Study, allowing easy rotation of different ensemble combinations in the first two years, before settling into your own ensemble project in Year 3 of the programme.

Our curriculum seeks to develop your artistic identity alongside a high level of performance skill, and you are actively encouraged and supported in establishing your professional career alongside your studies. Our students graduate as industry-ready professional musicians, pursuing their own projects as recording artists and performers, as well as session musicians, songwriters and producers.

The programme is divided into the following areas across four years:

Principal StudyRealising your true potential both technically and creatively on your instrument/voice through individual tuition with some of the world’s leading teachers is at the core of your training.

Ensemble PerformanceIn years one and two, you will develop a technical and critical understanding of the role of your instrument/voice within a range of musical environments and styles.

MusicianshipMusicianship underpins your technical and practical skills development and establishes a theoretical understanding of key musical components through creative improvisation-based performance.

Artist and RepertoireArtist and Repertoire focuses on artist development, both in terms of creative practice and entrepreneurial activity. You will compose original music and develop the skills required to promote yourself and your music to a broad audience.

Original Ensembles ProjectFollowing on from Ensemble Performance modules, you will specialise further in areas of research and creative practice that will form the basis of a professional career. In this self-devised project, you will build your own ensemble, compose original material, rehearse and record to professional standards, and give live showcase performances in professional venues in Manchester and across the UK.

Professional EngagementWorking with our industry partners and partner institutions, Professional Engagement is designed to allow you to experience life as a professional freelance musician, band or artist in the first semester of your final year, before returning to the College to reflect, plan and realise your individual and collective goals as you graduate from the programme.

Optional ModulesThere are opportunities to tailor your studies according to your areas of interest, and to specialise in areas that will best complement your artistic and academic goals.

‘At undergrad I’d done a lot of jazz outside of College, and

when I started the MMus I thought I could do with a jazz teacher. I split my tuition now;

50% of the time on classical guitar with Craig Ogden, and

50% with Dan Whieldon, a jazz pianist – he’s an amazing

theoretical teacher and has given me loads of concepts to work on.

I kind of didn’t want a guitarist to teach me jazz; I just want all the

ideas and vocabulary for when I’m playing for the long-term, so

that when I leave College I can still be working on it, cracking the

codes. That’s been great.’James Girling

‘I think this is the best place for pop musicians to try anything we want to do. We can self-design our own curriculum for the MMus and fix our own schedules, following our own pursuits and musical goals. It’s very flexible.

It’s really hard to find conservatoires that offer Master’s degrees in Popular Music so the RNCM is pretty unique.’Soyeon Kim MMus, Popular Music Vocals

‘I was at a university doing music before, then decided to come to

a music college to concentrate more on performance. The focus

here is different. At university you focus on your academic

work; there was a high quality of performance as well, just not

really as much time to invest in it. Here, it’s completely the

other way round; you invest in the playing and the performing,

and there is other stuff, but performance is your priority.’

You will experience a broad range of repertoire; whilst we place a strong emphasis on new music, we also nurture the established traditions of European wind, brass and percussion playing, and historically informed performance practice.

All students have weekly one-to-one Principal Study lessons, with teachers assigned after consultation with students; often, more than one teacher is assigned to deliver expertise in particular areas of study. This is supplemented by shared learning through a ‘European-style’ class structure, with the whole cross-year cohort of each instrument performing to each other, which promotes critical thinking and learning through observation.

Students receive additional lessons on a doubling, associated or jazz instrument as appropriate.

Principal StudiesWindWind players have opportunities to study appropriate doubling or associated instruments in addition to their Principal Study.

SaxophoneSaxophonists receive a mixture of individual lessons and classes by several specialist tutors. Doubling provision of soprano, alto, tenor and bass, as well as jazz skills, are offered within the teaching provision.

BrassPhilip Jones, the RNCM’s first Head of School, left his archive of brass ensemble music and related correspondence to the College, leaving a rich resource for wider study and research for brass players.

PercussionPercussionists receive tuition in timpani, tuned percussion, orchestral percussion, drum kit and world music skills, delivered in a variety of individual lessons by specialist tutors.

Chamber Music

Chamber music is at the heart of every performing musician’s education at the RNCM.

92

The College is the only UK member of the European Chamber Music Academy, allowing our advanced chamber ensembles to participate in classes with tutors and ensembles from other leading European institutions, such as the Paris Conservatoire and the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna.

Ensemble activity is a compulsory core part of the first two years of undergraduate study, and can be continued throughout your undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Lessons and classes with your chamber ensemble, and regular performance masterclasses, are taught by resident chamber specialists and visiting tutors independently of your Principal Study provision.

The annual RNCM Chamber Music Festival is the largest of its kind in Europe and attracts a truly international following. The 2018 Festival featured RNCM students performing alongside renowned guest artists such as Quatuor Voce, Trio Apaches, folk trio Faustus and musicians from the Aronowitz Ensemble.

Historical Performance

The idea of historically-informed stylistic awareness runs through everything we do.

94

Students are given the opportunity to develop skills on historical instruments and given coaching to enhance knowledge of earlier style, repertoire and technique, but Historical Performance is not separated out at the RNCM.

Orchestral performances, chamber concerts and opera productions at the RNCM regularly feature earlier repertoire to allow students to demonstrate and develop their awareness of informed historical performance. Repertoire is carefully chosen to match the interests, experience and instrumental techniques of the student.

The College has an extensive and increasing collection of instruments available for student loan, including: a complete Baroque string orchestra; keyboard instruments including harpsichord, chamber organ and fortepiano; Baroque and Classical woodwind and brass instruments. Our specialist tutors offer all students expert tuition on historical instruments. The College is also home to the 300-piece RNCM Collection of Historic Musical Instruments, and offers students performance, coaching and masterclass opportunities through an exciting partnership with the Academy of Ancient Music in Cambridge.

Jazz

All students at the RNCM are given the freedom to explore an interest in or passion for jazz.

96

Throughout your time at the College, you will have the opportunity to play in large and small jazz ensembles, including the RNCM Jazz Collective and the RNCM Big Band. The Big Band usually collaborates with well-known jazz musicians; in 2017 these included Laurence Cottle, Tina May and Alan Barnes.

Undergraduate students can choose jazz electives within Academic Studies and Artist Development, and postgraduates have the option of a postgraduate jazz module, or can make jazz their major focus. Students will receive tuition and masterclasses from a variety of visiting artists and musicians who are prolific on the professional jazz scene. Jazz electives allow students to develop a knowledge of core jazz repertoire, different approaches to improvising, and practical aspects of jazz performance.

This flexible approach enables you to explore jazz throughout your studies at the RNCM, with options to specialise in this field as your course progresses.

‘I was born in Malaysia but I grew up in China. Coming away from home was difficult, but I really enjoyed how everyone at the RNCM and in Manchester was very friendly and welcoming, and the fact it’s a very student-oriented city. International Welcome Week really helped, because everyone there was coming from their own country. Most of my friends that I’m close to now are the friends I met during that week.’
