Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron
One of Australia’s premier yacht clubs overlooking the Manly Boat Harbour, the
Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is proud of its long history which stretches
back over 130 years and still to this day is “the place” for boaties to meet,
compete and socialise.
The Squadron has evolved into a multi-faceted organisation and members, some
third and fourth generation families, enjoy a comprehensive range of facilities,
both on and off the water.
If you want to get into boating, be it power or sail, recreational or competitive – it’s
all here.
Some of the best facilities in the world are on offer at the Squadron, in an ideal
location, for boaties who need a berth, want to sail competitively, or just need
somewhere to store of launched their boat for cruising, fishing trip on the bay or
further afield.
While you’re on shore there are wide open spaces, grassed areas, the club house
with the Squadron Restaurant and the Boardwalk Cafe.
Sailing – the Squadron offers a comprehensive range of sailing related activities.
Children and adults alike are taught to sail in a fun, safe, supervised
environment and further development raining for sailors who want to race
competitively is offered. Other courses are also available to enhance your boating
education.

Why it’s important to:
Book your classes in advance:
To ensure we have enough Instructors rostered on to manage the courses we
need all bookings to be made in advance. Without knowing how many students
are due to arrive for classes, we have no idea how many Instructors to arrange.
Our Instructors are both paid and volunteer, however like anyone; they need to
be arranged prior to a course.
Pay for your classes before the start date:
Because we are a yacht and sailing club which conducts Saturday and at times,
Sunday racing, it’s extremely important that you pay for your courses in
advance. This will ensure you are not caught up with those trying to register for
club racing. Also, bookings are not confirmed until payment has been received.
Advise us of any medical conditions:
Sailing is a sport where anyone and everyone can be involved. However, if you
or your child has a medical condition we should be aware of, that may hinder
your/their sailing ability, we need to know about it. Please ensure you are
upfront with medical conditions so our Instructors can be briefed prior to going
onto the water. Squadron Management, Instructors and Volunteers are
respectful of privacy.
What to bring: Sun protective clothing Generally students bring UV shirts, a hat, closed in shoes (with white
soles), and sunscreen.
A water bottle & lunch
The Boardwalk Café & Restaurant & Bar is not open on Mondays and

The Junior Sailing Program follows the current system:
TACKERS 1 – ‘Having Fun’ This is the initial entry level of the course. It is designed to provide a safe and
enjoyable introduction to dinghy sailing. The course includes an introduction to
fundamental boat handling skills and essential knowledge that will allow the
students the freedom of sailing small boats with the guidance from the
Instructors. At the completion of this level the students will be issued with the
Yachting Australia Tackers 1 Qualification.
TACKERS 2 – ‘Tricks and Techniques’ This course is designed to consolidate the experiences and knowledge gained in
the Tackers 1 course and to introduce skills and knowledge that will enable the
successful participant to safely and competently sail a small boat in controlled
conditions (light winds, enclosed waters) without guidance. At the completion of
this course students will be issued with the Yachting Australia Tackers 2
Qualification.
TACKERS 3 – ‘Sailing Fast’ The aim of this course is to introduce sailors to competitive sailing. It builds on
the skills and knowledge gained in the two courses and will enable the child to
manoeuvre the boat efficiently in light to moderate conditions on all points of
sailing. This course is designed to equip the sailor with enhanced skills and
awareness of the surrounding environment and focuses on refining enhanced
boat handling skills including speed control and manoeuvres and introducing
participants to basic racing tactics and strategies. Students progress through
the levels at their own pace and without any pressure. At the completion of
each level the students will be accessed on competency to be awarded the
relevant qualification and move up to the next level.
