ENTRANCE PROCEDURE

Entry into Year 7 in September 2009

Applications are invited from candidates and an entrance examination will be held on Tuesday, January 6th 2009. Guidelines about the tests are given below. Royal Russell will approach the candidates’ current schools for a detailed reference. Offers will be made to the most successful candidates in line with our school policy. As replies are received, other offers will be sent out to candidates on the waiting list until our capacity is reached. We admit three classes of approximately twenty two places. Offers to girls will be made during week commencing January 19th and, in line with local independent schools, offers to boys will be made on 19th February.

11+ ENTRANCE EXAMINATION All applicants will be asked to sit the following papers: Mathematics: 40 minutes Cognitive Processes Test: 1 hour 15 minutes English Reading Test: 1 hour English Writing and Spelling Test: 30 minutes As part of the entrance procedure each candidate will have an informal individual interview with a senior member of the academic staff. Before arriving at a decision on suitability to join Royal Russell we pay particular attention to the reports submitted by the pupil’s current school.

MATHEMATICS Mathematics Examination: 40 minutes The use of calculators is not permitted. Questions which go beyond the National Curriculum KS2 syllabus are designed to test the children’s natural mathematical ability. A sample paper is appended to this document.

COGNITIVE PROCESSES TEST Cognitive Processes Test: 1 hour 15 minutes This is a novel and engaging on-screen test of cognitive processes. It is designed to identify potential rather than taught achievement. There are no practice materials.

ENGLISH English Reading Test: 1 hour English Writing and Spelling Test: 30 minutes The English papers are similar to SATS exams. You will find sample papers at www.satspapers.co.uk/englishks2.htm and can click on the Reading tests and the Shorter Writing and Spelling tests for Key Stage 2.

MATHEMATICS ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

The entrance exam will include many of the following topics: Whole numbers and decimals x / + - Fractions Decimals % Factors Negative numbers Metric units of length and simple conversion Simple number patterns Solving simple linear equations Problems Co-ordinates Compass points Angles Triangles Quadrilaterals Other polygons Area Volume Averages Time Approximation Time: The test will last 40 minutes Equipment required: Pen, pencil, ruler (no calculators) Instructions for the entrance exam:

• Answer as many questions as you can in the time available. • Work quickly. • You may not have time to complete the whole paper. • Wait until you are told to start before turning the page over.
