RoyOMartin’s oriented strand board (OSB) plant is known as the highest-producing mill of its kind in NorthAmerica. Located on about 200 acres of land between Glenmora and Oakdale, Louisiana, its first OSB panel waspressed in January 2007. Throughout the years, the plant has steadily increased production, up to 800 millionsquare feet (3/8" basis) a year. Below is a description of the process for turning logs into finished panels, as wellas an overview of our different brands of OSB.

Scale House and Log YardAfter first weighing in at thescale house, log trucks proceedto the unbinding stations, wheredrivers safely remove thebinding straps from their load oflogs. After unbinding, the trucksgo to the west side of the logyard, where logs are unloadedby one of two Andritz cranes. Each crane is equipped with a15-ton grapple. Depending onthe load’s size and stackingmethod, log trucks can beunloaded in two to four bites ofthe grapple. Logs are stacked into one of 10 stacking zones that can each hold upwards of 8,000 tons. The zonesare aged 7 to 28 days before being reclaimed into the log-processing system.

Debarker, Stranders, and DryersThe logs are fed into one of three log lines. The logs enter into a debarkingdrum that tumbles them against one another, stripping the bark away. Thebark is conveyed to the fuel-storage bin, also known as the Clarke’s bin.Bark adds no value to the finished product, so it is used as a fuel sourcein the Teaford furnace system. After the logs are debarked, they enter intoa Carmanah strander, which is equipped with forty-four 28-inch knives. Thedesired specification for a quality strand is 2 x6" and 0.025" thick. Thestrands are conveyed to one of six green storage bins above three dryers. These strands are gravity-fed into the inlet of the dryer. The T.S.I. dryersare heated by two, 1650-degree Teaford furnaces that dry the strands tofour to five percent moisture content. After the strands are dried, they areconveyed to the screens building, where the strands are separated intothree types of strands: face, core, and fines. The dry fines are screened, and the smaller particulates are conveyed to the dry side of the fuel-storage bin to be burned in our furnaces.

BlendersOnce the strands are separated, they are conveyed to the blender building to have wax and resin applied to them. The face strands are housed in three different storage bins, and core strands are housed in two different storagebins. Each of these five dry-storage bins has its own Coil tumble blender beneath it. The strands are meteredacross a scale conveyor before entering into the blender. This is done to determine the amount of wax and resinthat need to be applied. As the strands tumble through the blender, wax and resin are applied by a spin discatomizer that spins at 10,000 rotations per minute, creating an aerosol affect. Strands are then conveyed to theforming line.

Forming LineThe Dieffenbacher forming line is made up of four separate metering binsthat create the raw mat beneath them. These metering bins dump thematerial onto the forming-line belt in a sequence of applying layers:bottom face, bottom core, top core, and then the top face. These layersare oriented in different directions as they are applied, hence the nameoriented strand board. The raw mat is weighed in pounds per square footas it crosses a scale. The 12-foot-wide raw mat is cut to the desiredlength. The length of the raw mat, also known as a master panel, rangesfrom 24 to 26 feet. The raw mat is placed onto a steel mesh screen forloading into the press.

PressThe press is a 14-opening simultaneous press supplied by Dieffenbacher.Operating at 415 degrees, it is heated by thermal oil, which is also heated bythe Teaford furnace. The press cycle will range in length depending onthickness. A press load of 7/16" will run as short as 154 seconds. A lot ofdifferent variables play a role in determining the time it takes to make aquality panel. Forming-line moisture, for example, plays a big part in thetransfer of heat to the center of the board, curing the core resin. A two tothree percent higher differential is required in the face layer to create steam, transferring the heat to the core layer.

SawlineAfter the boards are pressed, they are conveyed to the Con-Vey Keystone saw line, where they are trimmed andcut from a master panel to a finished panel. Each master panel is cut into nine smaller panels ranging in lengthsfrom the traditional 8 feet to 145 1/8 inches. Panels are then stacked into units with a desired piece countdetermined by thickness and length.

Foil MachinePanels needing foil applied to them for use as a radiant barrier travel to the foilmachine. This machine adheres perforated foil to one side of each panel, makingthese panels more energy efficient than traditional OSB.

Storage and Delivery

After sawing, units are conveyed to one of two Willamette Valley spray-paintbooths. A red edge seal is applied to the unit, which helps reduce the amount ofambient moisture absorbed and identifies our product. The unit is strapped, bagged, and tagged. A tag with a bar code is placed on the unit that lets forkliftdrivers know in what row to stage the unit in the warehouse. Units are stenciledwith our TuffStrand® logo and the thickness of each panel. An auto-wrapper alsoplaces a protectant wrap over units being shipped via railcar before they areplaced in the warehouse. The units await shipment by either truck or railcar. Enduses for our OSB products include residential and non-residential construction.

The Louisiana Black Bear Receives Proposal for Delisting

On January 7, 1992,the U.S. Fish andWildlife Service(USFWS) granted theLouisiana black bear,Ursus americanusluteolus, threatenedstatus under theEndangered SpeciesAct of 1973. The

listing was due primarily to loss and fragmentation ofbottomland hardwood forests in the Lower MississippiRiver Valley. This habitat loss and fragmentation, whichoccurred over the course of many decades, posed asignificant threat to the already dwindling bearsubpopulations by reducing the total amount of availablehabitat and increasing the risk of inbreeding as a result ofisolation.

Since 1992, RoyOMartin has proudly supported theUSFWS, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife andFisheries, and several universities in their efforts torestore the Louisiana black bear population byparticipating in research and allowing the use ofcompany-owned bottomland hardwood forests for thepurpose of conducting research and monitoring bearsubpopulations. Located in the heart of the bear’s native

range, these company-owned forests also play a key rolein the connectivity of breeding subpopulations across thestate. Currently, the USFWS estimates that the totalnumber of Louisiana black bears is between 500 and750, which is approximately double the population size atthe time of listing.

At the Louisiana Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge onMay 20, the USFWS proposed the delisting of theLouisiana black bear from the Endangered Species Actand released a draft post-delisting monitoring plan. Thisplan is designed to detect population declines at an earlystage and will be used to monitor the Louisiana blackbear population for the next seven years if it is delisted.Public hearings were held by the USFWS on June 23 andJune 25, 2015, and written public comments wereaccepted through July 20, 2015.

Ted Roosevelt IV was a guest speaker for the proposeddelisting event, where he mentioned President TheodoreRoosevelt’s passion for conservation and the greatoutdoors, recalling that specific 1902 hunting adventurefrom which the “teddy bear” was born. Should the bearin fact be delisted, RoyOMartin hunting club lessees andother outdoor enthusiasts could potentially have anotherbig game species to hunt in Louisiana.

Spreading Christmas Joy

Dozens of RoyOMartin employees took on the roleof Santa’s helper throughout December. For manyyears, our organization has teamed up with theSalvation Army in Alexandria, from countingdonations made in their famous red kettles todistributing toys to needy families through thenonprofit’s Angel Tree Christmas project. This yearwas no different. On December 17, severalRoyOMartin executives and other team membersvolunteered at the Salvation Army’s warehouse topack food boxes for needy Central Louisianafamilies. Others counted money at the nonprofit’sheadquarters.

In another activity spanning several weeks, our employees purchased more than $6,000 in gifts and gift cards for sixfamilies hand-picked by Faith House of Acadiana. A domestic-violence crisis center and shelter based in Lafayette,Louisiana, this nonprofit serves seven parishes in central and south Louisiana. The donation was made to Faith Houserepresentatives on December 18 at our corporate office. In a Facebook post shared by Faith House, the organizationwrote, “‘Thank you’ is certainly not enough to show our gratitude to RoyOMartin’s employees for their generosity, not justat Christmas, but throughout the year! What a great company and community partner!” Children from Faith House madea special gift for RoyOMartin to thank them for their generosity.

“I am so proud of the generosity of our employees,” stated President and CFO Roy O. Martin III. “Giving back to thecommunity and helping those in need is a very important thing we do here at RoyOMartin.”

By All Means, Save SomeIn the 92-year history of RoyOMartin, there are manystories shared regarding the company’s impact on thecommunity, other organizations, families, andindividuals. One of these stories comes from a localphysician who shared with a Martin family memberthese remarks, “Your company is saving lives bypainting Bible verses on your trees.”The physician told the story of a man who, during a verylow time in his life, drove out into the country with a gunin his vehicle and with the intent of harming himself.Somewhere on a country road, he came upon a sectionof timberland that had the traditional “ROM” yellowboundary markings [in this case, numbers] on thecorner trees. He took the markings as a sign from Godmeant for him, so he drove home and looked up theBible verses. They spoke to his heart, and that sightingturned his life around. Now, he tells the story about how

great it is that RoyOMartin paintsBible verses on their trees.Even though our forestrydepartment paints “ROM” and theyear on corner trees on companyproperty, this individual felt he wasmeant to go home, look up thescripture reference from the NewTestament book of Romans, andapply them to his life. The apostlePaul stated in 1 Corinthians 9:22: “Ihave become all things to all men sothat by all possible means I might save some. I do allthis for the sake of the gospel that I may share in itsblessings.” God’s word is powerful and can speak to us in manyways. May it be true for you and me.
