The Celebration of Sacraments

Infant Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism is regularly celebrated on Sunday during or after the Eucharistic Liturgy. Registered parishioners are asked to arrange for the Baptismal Preparation Class and the Liturgical Celebration by calling the Parish Office.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: RCIA is the process of growing in your faith and love of God. Weekly gatherings take place from September until Easter. If you are interested in learning about Catholicism and joining us please call Deacon Tom at the rectory at Historic St. Patrick @ 419-243-6452. Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at IC, 9:30 a.m. at HSP and 10:30 a.m. at IC every Sunday or by appointment.

Matrimony: Anyone planning to be married must contact the parish at least six months in advance. The exact date and time of your wedding should not be determined until after consultation with a priest or deacon. If either party has previously been civilly or religiously married, the Presider is not permitted to set a date for the wedding without resolving the previous marriage.

Pastoral Care of the Sick: When a parishioner is admitted to the hospital, nursing home, or confined to home because of age or infirmity, please call the Parish Office. Parishioners are ready to visit and to bring Holy Communion. When one is seriously ill, the healing Presence of the Lord should be requested in the Sacrament of the Sick.

Dear People of God, Pentecost, the fiftieth day after Easter, celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit as “tongues of fire”

on the Apostles and Jesus’ mother as they gathered in the same upper room where the Twelve had

shared the Last Supper. I was asked by an astute lector looking ahead in the workbook why the

Apostles were still in the upper room since none of them were residents there but only visitors to

Jerusalem. You may recall from the Passion accounts that Jesus and the disciples were camping on

the Mount of Olives and Jesus dispatched a couple of them to go into the city to prepare a place for

the Passover meal. After the meal, they returned to the camp grounds where Jesus was arrested.

No one knows why they returned to the upper room, but we can take a couple of guesses that might

help us better grasp the significance of the upper room. First is a practical consideration: I would

think that Jesus picked that place for the Last Supper because it belonged to someone he knew, a

good friend and probably a follower of the way. After the crucifixion, that person would have been

as stunned and hurt as any of the Twelve so may well have asked them to stay in town to mourn

properly. Then, after the Resurrection, the joy of that momentous event would have provided

ample reason for yet another invitation to stick around and do some proper celebrating. While that

makes sense, I think there’s a deeper spiritual meaning to the place where the Apostles are awaiting

the Holy Spirit. As I hope everyone knows, the Eucharist is “source and summit” of our Catholic

life, so where we celebrate the Eucharist should be the most sacred of places to gather and we

ought to gather there frequently. The upper room was the first ‘church’ where Mass was

celebrated, where the Body and Blood of Jesus were offered sacrificially to the Father for our

salvation. Where better to go back and celebrate yet another sacred moment than to that place of

worship, sacrifice and salvation? The symbolism of the upper room should underscore for us the

dignity of the worship space and focus our attention on the sacred moments shared there. The

sacramental life of the Church, making Jesus manifest in action and word, continues to take place

in the sacred space of the church. It’s where most of us were baptized, where we encountered

Jesus for the first time in the Eucharist, where the Holy Spirit descended on us in Confirmation,

where we were married, and where we find the warm embrace of a loving God in Reconciliation.

So it is that we, like the Twelve, return to this same sacred space time after time to celebrate God’s

abiding presence, God’s love, and even the challenge of God to love our neighbor as we love

ourselves.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Congratulations to our Queen of Apostles graduates who celebrated their graduation her at Immaculate Conception on May 30th with the Bishop! The ceremony went well, and we ask your prayers for the students as they move forward in their education.

Congratulations to Haileigh Parra, who graduated from Clay High School on June 2, 2019. Haileigh will be attending the University of Toledo, majoring in law enforcement.

The Monday after Pentecost has been designated as a Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. We invite you to pray this prayer in honor of our Blessed Mother.

Prayer

O God, Father of mercies, whose Only Begotten Son, as he hung upon the Cross, chose the Blessed Virgin Mary, his Mother, to be our Mother also, grant, we pray, that with her loving help your Church may be more fruitful day by day and, exulting in the holiness of her children, may draw to her embrace all the families of the peoples. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
