This warranty applies for only 90 days from the date of purchase if this Lawn Mower isever used for commercial or rental purposes.

This warranty does not cover:

Expendable items that become worn during normal use, such as rotary mowerblades, blade adapters, belts, air cleaners and spark plug.

Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or negligence, including bentcrackshafts and the failure to assemble, operate or maintain this Lawn Moweraccording to all supplied product instructions.

This warranty applies only while this product is used in the United States.

I. GENERAL OPERATION

• Read, understand, and follow allinstructions on the machine and in the

manual(s) before starting. Be thoroughlyfamiliar with the controls and the properuse of the machine before starting.

• Do not put hands or feet near or underrotating parts. Keep clear of the dis-charge opening at all times.

• Only allow responsible individuals, whoare familiar with the instructions, to oper-ate the machine.

• Clear the area of objects such as rocks,toys, wire, bones, sticks, etc., whichcould be picked up and thrown by blade.

• Be sure the area is clear of other peoplebefore mowing. Stop machine if anyoneenters the area.

• Do not operate the mower when bare-foot or wearing open sandals. Alwayswear substantial foot wear.

• Do not pull mower backwards unlessabsolutely necessary. Always look downand behind before and while movingbackwards.

• Never direct discharged material towardanyone. Avoid discharging materialagainst a wall or obstruction. Materialmay richochet back toward the opera-tor. Stop the blade when crossing gravelsurfaces.

• Do not operate the mower withoutproper guards, plates, grass catcher orother safety protective devices in place.

• See manufacturer's instructions for

proper operation and installation ofaccessories. Only use accessories ap-proved by the manufacturer.

• Stop the blade(s) when crossing graveldrives, walks, or roads.

• Stop the engine (motor) whenever youleave the equipment, before cleaning themower or unclogging the chute.

• Shut the engine (motor) off and wait untilthe blade comes to complete stop beforeremoving grass catcher.

• Mow only in daylight or good artificiallight.

• Do not operate the machine while underthe influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Never operate machine in wet grass.Always be sure of your footing: keep afirm hold on the handle; walk, never run.

• Disengage the self-propelled mech-anism or drive clutch on mowers so

equipped before starting the engine.• If the equipment should start to vibrate

abnormally, stop the engine (motor) andcheck immediately for the cause. Vibra-tion is generally a warning of trouble.

• Always wear safety goggles or safetyglasses with side shields when operatingmower.

II. SLOPE OPERATION

Slopes are a major factor related to slip &fall accidents which can result in severe in-

jury. All slopes require extra caution. If youfeel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it.DO:

• Mow across the face of slopes: neverup and down. Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction on slopes.

• Remove obstacles such as rocks, treelimbs, etc.

• Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Tallgrass can hide obstacles.

DO NOT:

• Do not trim near drop-offs, ditches orembankments. The operator could losefooting or balance.

• Do not trim excessively steep slopes.• Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced foot-

ing could cause slipping.

III. CHILDREN

Tragic accidents can occur if the operatoris not alert to the presence of children.Children are often attracted to the machineand the mowing activity. Never assumethat children will remain where you lastsaw them.• Keep children out of the trimming area

and under the watchful care of another

responsible adult.• Be alert and turn machine off if children

enter the area.

• Before and while walking backwards,look behind and down for small children.

• Never allow children to operate the ma-chine.

• Use extra care when approaching blindcorners, shrubs, trees, or other objectsthat may obscure vision.

IV. SAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE

Use extreme care in handling gasoline.Gasoline is extremely flammable and thevapors are explosive.• Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes

and other sources of ignition.• Use only an approved container.• Never remove gas cap or add fuel with

the engine running. Allow engine to coolbefore refueling.

• Never refuel the machine indoors.• Never store the machine or fuel contain-

er where there is an open flame, sparkor pilot light such as a water heater or onother appliances.

• Never fill containers inside a vehicle, ona truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner.Always place containers on the groundaway from your vehicle before filling.

• Remove gas-powered equipment fromthe truck or trailer and refuel it on the

ground. If this is not possible, thenrefuel such equipment with a portablecontainer, rather than from a gasolinedispenser nozzle.

• Keep the nozzle in contact with the rimof the fuel tank or container opening atall times until fueling is complete. Donot use a nozzle lock-open device.

• If fuel is spilled on clothing, changeclothing immediately.

• Never overfill fuel tank. Replace gascap and tighten securely.

V. GENERAL SERVICE• Never run a machine inside a closed

area.• Never make adjustments or repairs with

the engine (motor) running. Disconnectthe spark plug wire, and keep the wireaway from the plug to prevent accidentalstarting.

• Keep nuts and bolts, especially bladeattachment bolts, tight and keep equip-ment in good condition.

• Never tamper with safety devices. Checktheir proper operation regularly.

• Keep machine free of grass, leaves, orother debris build-up. Clean oil or fuelspillage. Allow machine to cool beforestoring.

• Stop and inspect the equipment if youstrike an object. Repair, if necessary,before restarting.

• Never attempt to make wheel heightadjustments while the engine is running.

• Grass catcher components are subjectto wear, damage, and deterioration,which could expose moving parts orallow objects to be thrown. Frequentlycheck components and replace withmanufacturer's recommended parts,when necessary.

• Mower blades are sharp and can cut.Wrap the blade(s) or wear gloves, anduse extra caution when servicing them.

• Do not change the engine governor set-ting or overspeed the engine.

• Maintain or replace safety and instruc-tion labels, as necessary.

AWARNING: This lawn mower is equipped with an internal combustion engine andshould not be used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brush-covered orgrass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system is equipped with a sparkarrester meeting applicable local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, itshould be maintained in effective working order by the operator.In the state of California the above is required by law (Section 4442 of the CaliforniaPublic Resources Code). Other states may have similar laws. Federal laws apply onfederal lands. A spark arrester for the muffler is available through your nearest SearsParts & Repair Center (See the REPAIR PARTS section of this manual).

Read these instructions and this manual in its entirety before you attempt to assemble oroperate your new lawn mower.IMPORTANT: This lawn mower is shipped WITHOUT OIL OR GASOLINE in the engine.

Your new lawn mower has been assembled at the factory with the exception of those partsleft unassembled for shipping purposes. To ensure safe and proper operation of your lawnmower, all parts and hardware you assemble must be tightened securely. Use the correcttools as necessary to ensure proper tightness. All parts such as nuts, washers, bolts, etc.,necessary to complete the assembly have been placed in the parts bag.

TO REMOVE MOWER FROM CARTON

1. Remove loose parts included with mower.2. Cut down two end corners of carton

and lay end panel down flat.3. Remove all packing materials except

padding between upper and lowerhandle and padding holding operatorpresence control bar to upper handle.

4. Roll lawn mower out of carton and

check carton thoroughly for additionalloose parts.

HOW TO SET UP YOUR MOWERTO UNFOLD HANDLE

IMPORTANT: Unfold handle carefully soas not to pinch or damage control cables.1. Raise handles until lower handle sec-

tion locks into place in mowing position.2. Remove protective padding, raise up-

per handle section into place on lowerhandle and tighten both handle knobs.

3. Remove handle padding holding operatorpresence control bar to upper handle.

Your lawn mower handle can be adjustedfor your mowing comfort. Refer to "AD-JUST HANDLE" in the Service and Adjust-ments section of this manual.

HOW TO USE YOUR LAWN MOWER

ENGINE SPEED

The engine speed was set at the factoryfor optimum performance. Speed is notadjustable.

ENGINE ZONE CONTROL

ACAUTION: Federal regulations requirean engine control to be installed on thislawn mower in order to minimize the

risk of blade contact injury. Do not underany circumstances attempt to defeat thefunction of the operator control. The bladeturns when the engine is running.• Your lawn mower is equipped with an

operator presence control bar whichrequires the operator to be positionedbehind the lawn mower handle to start

and operate the lawn mower.

DRIVE CONTROL

• Self-propelling is controlled by hold-ing the operator presence control bardown to the handle and pulling the drivecontrol bar up to the handle. The closerto the handle the bar is pulled, the fasterthe unit will travel.

• Forward motion will stop when eitherthe operator presence control bar ordrive control bar are released. To stopforward motion without stopping engine,release the drive control bar only. Holdoperator presence control bar downagainst handle to continue mowingwithout self-propelling.

NOTE: If after releasing the drive controlthe mower will not roll backwards, pushthe mower forward slightly to disengagedrive wheels.

• To keep drive control engaged whenturning corners, push down on thehandle to lift the front wheels off the

Over time, the drive control system maybecome "loose", resulting in decreasedspeed. There is a thumbscrew on theunderside of the drive control housing toincrease tension on the drive cable. Pro-ceed as follows:

1. Turn unit off and disconnect spark plugwire from spark plug.

2. Rotate thumbscrew counter-clockwise

to tighten the drive cable.3. Operate mower to test drive speed.4. If condition fails to improve after the

above steps (forward speed remainsthe same), your drive belt is worn andshould be replaced.

NOTE: If mower begins to "creep" for-ward, the drive cable is too tight. Rotatethumbscrew clockwise to loosen drivecable.

TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT

Raise wheels for low cut and lower wheels

for high cut, adjust cutting height to suityour requirements. Medium position isbest for most lawns.

• To change cutting height, squeeze ad-juster lever toward wheel. Move wheelup or down to suit your requirements. Besure all wheels are in the same setting.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

ADD OIL

Your lawnmower is shipped without oil inthe engine. For type and grade of oil touse, see "ENGINE" in the Maintenancesection of this manual.

_, CAUTION: DO NOT overfill engine withoil, or it will smoke heavily from the muffleron startup.1. Be sure lawnmower is level.2. Remove oil dipstick from oil fill spout.3. You receive a container of oil with the

unit. Slowly pour the entire containerdown the oil fill spout into the engine.

NOTE: Initial oil fill requires only 18 oz.due to residual oil in engine from themanufacturers 100% quality testing. Whenchanging oil you may need 20 oz.4. Insert and tighten dipstick.IMPORTANT:• Check oil level before each use. Add oil

if needed. Fill to full line on dipstick.• Change the oil after every 25 hours of

operation or each season. You mayneed to change the oil more oftenunder dusty, dirty conditions. See "TOCHANGE ENGINE Oil" in the Mainte-nance section of this manual.

ATTACH FUEL CAP CARTRIDGE

Your mower is equipped with a specialFRESH START TM fuel cap and continuousfuel preserver cartridge. See the infor-mation and instructions packed with theFRESH START TM cartridge.

1. Snap cartridge into bottom of fuel cap.NOTE: Do not remove the silver foil sealon the side of cartridge that snaps into fuelcap.2. Grasp the white peel tab and pull to

remove the entire seal.

3. Screw fuel cap onto fuel tank after fill-ing tank with gasoline.

Replace cartridge when empty (aboutonce a season). Check preserver levelvisually.A DANGER: Cartridge fluid is HARMFULOR FATAL IF SWALLOWED. Avoid con-

tact to eyes, skin, or clothing. Do not takeinternally. Do not inhale fluid vapor. Keepout of reach of children. If swallowed, calla physician immediately.

ADD GASOLINE

• Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank filler neck.

Do not overfill. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline with a minimum of87 octane. Do not mix oil with gasoline.Purchase fuel in quantities that can beused within 30 days to assure fuel fresh-ness.

A CAUTION: Wipe off any spilled oil orfuel. Do not store, spill or use gasolinenear an open flame.• I, CAUTION: Alcohol blended fuels

(called gasohol or using ethanol or metha-nol) can attract moisture which leads toseparation and formation of acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. Toavoid engine problems, the fuel systemshould be emptied before storage of 30days or longer. Empty the gas tank, startthe engine and let it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuelnext season. See Storage Instructions foradditional information. Never use engineor carburetor cleaner products in the fueltank or permanent damage may occur.

TO STOP ENGINE

• To stop engine, release operator pres-ence control bar.

TO START ENGINE

NOTE: Due to protective coatings on theengine, a small amount of smoke may bepresent during the initial use of the prod-uct and should be considered normal.

NOTE: Your engine is equipped with anautomatic choke system. No priming orchoking is required before starting.• To start engine, hold operator presence

control bar down to the handle and

pull starter handle quickly. Do not allowstarter rope to snap back.

MOWING TIPS

_, CAUTION: Do not use de-thatcher

blade attachments on your mower. Suchattachments are hazardous, will damageyour mower and could void your warranty.

• Under certain conditions, such as verytall grass, it may be necessary to raisethe height of cut to reduce pushingeffort and to keep from overloading theengine and leaving clumps of grass clip-pings. It may also be necessary to re-duce ground speed and/or run the lawnmower over the area a second time.

• For extremely heavy cutting, reduce thewidth of cut by overlapping previouslycut path and mow slowly.

• For better grass bagging and most cut-ting conditions, the engine speed shouldbe set in the FAST position.

• Pores in cloth grass catchers can be-come filled with dirt and dust with useand catchers will collect less grass. Toprevent this, regularly hose catcher offwith water and let dry before using.

• Keep top of engine around starter clearand clean of grass clippings and chaff.This will help engine air flow and extendengine life.

MULCHING MOWING TIPS

IMPORTANT: For best performance,keep mower housing free of built-upgrass and trash. See "CLEANING" in theMaintenance section of this manual.

• The special mulching blade will recutthe grass clippings many times andreduce them in size so that as they fallonto the lawn they will disperse intothe grass and not be noticed. Also, themulched grass will biodegrade quicklyto provide nutrients for the lawn. Alwaysmulch with your highest engine (blade)speed as this will provide the best recut-ting action of the blades.

• Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet.Wet grass tends to form clumps andinterferes with the mulching action. Thebest time to mow your lawn is the earlyafternoon. At this time the grass hasdried, yet the newly cut area will not beexposed to direct sunlight.

• For best results, adjust the lawn mowercutting height so that the lawn mowercuts off only the top one-third of thegrass blades. If the lawn is overgrown itwill be necessary to raise the height ofcut to reduce pushing effort and to keepfrom overloading the engine and leavingclumps of mulched grass. For extremelyheavy grass, reduce your width of cutby overlapping previously cut path andmow slowly.

MAXI_

• Certain types of grass and grassconditions may require that an area bemulched a second time to completelyhide the clippings. When doing a sec-ond cut, mow across (perpendicular) tothe first cut path.

• Change your cutting pattern from weekto week. Mow north to south one week

then change to east to west the nextweek. This will help prevent matting andgraining of the lawn.

• Avoid stumps, stones, deep ruts, sharpobjects and other hazards that maycause tire damage.

DRIVE WHEELS

Check front drive wheels each time beforeyou mow to be sure they move freely.The wheels not turning freely means trash,grass cuttings, etc. are in the drive wheel areaand must be cleaned to free drive wheels.

If necessary to clean the drive wheels, besure to clean both front wheels.1. Remove hubcaps, Iocknuts & washers.2. Remove wheels from wheel adjusters.3. Remove any trash or grass cuttings

from inside the dust cover, pinion and/or drive wheel gear teeth.

4. Put wheels back in place.NOTE: If after cleaning, the drive wheelsdo not turn freely, contact a Sears or otherqualified service center.

BLADE CARE

For best results, blade must be kept sharp.Replace a bent or damaged blade.ACAUTION: Use only a replacement bladeapp roved by the manufactu rer of you r mower.Using a blade not approved by the manu-facturer of your mower is hazardous, coulddamage your mower and void your warranty.

TO REMOVE BLADE

1. Disconnect spark plug wire from sparkplug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with plug.

2. Turn lawn mower on its side. Makesure air filter and carburetor are up.

3. Use a wood block between blade and

mower housing to prevent blade fromturning when removing blade bolt.

NOTE: Protect your hands with glovesand/or wrap blade with heavy cloth.4. Remove blade bolt by turning counter-

clockwise.

5. Remove blade & attaching hardware(bolt, lock washer & hardened washer).

TO REPLACE BLADE

1. Position blade on the blade adapteraligning the two (2) holes in the bladewith the raised lugs on the adapter.

2. Be sure the trailing edge of blade (oppo- •site sharp edge) is up toward the engine.

3. Install the blade bolt with the lockwasher and hardened washer into

blade adapter and crankshaft. 13 •

4. Use block of wood between blade andlawn mower housing and tighten theblade bolt, turning clockwise.

• The recommended tightening torque is35-40 ft. Ibs.

IMPORTANT: Blade bolt is heat treated.

If bolt needs replacing, replace only withapproved bolt shown in the Repair Partssection of this manual.

TO SHARPEN BLADE

NOTE: We do not recommend sharpeningthe blade - but if you do, be sure the bladeis balanced. Care should be taken to keepthe blade balanced. An un balanced blade will

cause eventual damage to mower or engine.• The blade can be sharpened with a file

or on a grinding wheel. Do not attemptto sharpen while on the mower.

• To check blade balance, drive a nail intoa beam or wall. Leave about one inch of

the straight nail exposed. Place centerhole of blade over the head of the nail.

If blade is balanced, it should remain ina horizontal position. If either end of theblade moves downward, sharpen theheavy end until the blade is balanced.

GRASS CATCHER

• The grass catcher may be hosed withwater, but must be dry when used.

• Check your grass catcher often for dam-age or deterioration. Through normaluse it will wear. If catcher needs replac-ing, replace only with approved replace-ment catcher shown in the Repair Partssection of this manual. Give the lawn

mower model number when ordering.GEAR CASE

• To keep your drive system workingproperly, the gear case and area aroundthe drive should be kept clean and freeof trash build-up. Clean under the drivecover twice a season.The gear case is filled with lubricant to theproper level at the factory. The only timethe lubricant needs attention is if servicehas been performed on the gear case.If lubricant is required, use only Elf Mul-tis EP00. Do not substitute.

ENGINELUBRICATION

Use only high quality detergent oil rated withAPI service classification SG-SL. Select the

oil's SAE viscosity grade according to yourexpected operating temperature.

Change the oil after every 25 hours of op-eration orat least once a year if the moweris not used for 25 hours in one year.Check the crankcase oil level before

starting the engine and after each five (5)hours of continuous use. Tighten oil plugsecurely each time you check the oil level.

TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL

NOTE: Before tipping lawn mower to drainoil, empty fuel tank by running engine untilfuel tank is empty.1. Disconnect spark plug wire from spark

plug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with plug.

2. Remove engine oil cap; lay aside on aclean surface.

3. Tip lawn mower on its side as shownand drain oil into a suitable container.Rock lawn mower back and forth to re-move any oil trapped inside of engine.

4. Wipe off any spilled oil from lawnmower or side of engine.

5. Slowly pour oil down the oil fill spout,stopping every few ounces to check theoil level with the dipstick.

6. Stop adding oil when you reach theFULL mark on the dipstick. Wait aminute to allow oil to settle.

7. Continue adding small amounts of oil,rechecking the dipstick until oil levelsettles at FULL. DO NOT overfill, or

engine will smoke heavily from themuffler on startup.

8. Always be sure to retighten oil dipstickbefore starting engine.

9. Reconnect spark plug wire to spark plug.AIR FILTER

Your engine will not run properly andmay be damaged by using a dirty airfilter. Replace the air filter cartridge every100 hours of operation or every season,whichever occurs first. Service air cleaner

more often under dusty conditions.

TO CLEAN AIR FILTER

1. Loosen screw and tilt cover to remove.

2. Carefully remove cartridge.3. Clean by gently tapping on a flat sur-

face. If very dirty, replace cartridge._I_CAUTION: Petroleum solvents, suchas kerosene, are not to be used to cleancartridge. They may cause deteriorationof the cartridge. Do not oil cartridge. Donot use pressurized air to clean or drycartridge.4. Install cartridge, then replace cover

making sure the tabs are aligned withthe slots in the back plate. Fastenscrew securely.

CLEANING

IMPORTANT: For best performance,keep mower housing free of built-grassand trash. Clean the underside of yourmower after each use.

• Clean the underside of your lawn mowerby scraping to remove build-up of grassand trash.

• Clean engine often to keep trash fromaccumulating. A clogged engine runshotter and shortens engine life.

• Keep finished surfaces and wheels freeof all gasoline, oil, etc.

• We do not recommend using a gardenhose to clean lawn mower unless theelectrical system, muffler, air filter andcarburetor are covered to keep waterout. Water in engine can result in short-ened engine life.

CLEAN UNDER DRIVE COVER

Clean under drive cover at least twice a sea-

son. Scrape underside of cover with puttyknife or similar tool to remove any build-upof trash or grass on underside of drive cover.

A WARNING: To avoid serious injury,before performing any service andadjustments:1. Release control bar and stop engine.2. Make sure the blade and all moving

parts have completely stopped.3. Disconnect spark plug wire from spark

plug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with plug.

REAR DEFLECTOR

The rear deflector, attached between therear wheels of your mower, is provided tominimize the possibility that objects willbe thrown out of the rear of the mower

into the operator mowing position. If thedeflector becomes damaged, it should bereplaced.

TO REMOVE DRIVE BELT

1. Remove drive cover and belt keeper.2. Remove belt from gearcase pulley by

pushing down on pulley and rolling beltoff it.

3. Turn lawn mower on its side with airfilter and carburetor down.

4. Remove blade and debris shield.

5. Remove belt from engine pulley oncrankshaft.

TO REPLACE DRIVE BELT

1. Install new belt on engine pulley.2. Reinstall debris shield and blade.3. Return mower to upright position.4. Install new belt on gearcase pulley.5. Reinstall belt keeper and drive cover.NOTE: Always use factory approved beltto assure fit and long life.

Your engine speed has been factory set.Do not attempt to increase engine speed

or it may result in personal injury. If youbelieve that engine is running too fast ortoo slow, take your mower to a Sears orother qualified service center for repairand adjustment.CARBURETOR

Your carburetor is not adjustable. If yourengine does not operate properly due to sus-pected carburetor problems, take your lawnmower to a Sears or other qualified servicecenter for repair and/or adjustment.IMPORTANT: Never tamper with theengine governor, which is factory setfor proper engine speed. Overspeedingthe engine above the factory high speedsetting can be dangerous. If you thinkthe engine-governed high speed needsadjusting, contact a Sears or otherqualified service center, which has properequipment and experience to make anynecessary adjustments.

Immediately prepare your lawn mower for storage at the end of the season or if the unitwill not be used for 30 days or more.

LAWN MOWERWhen lawn mower is to be stored for a

period of time, clean it thoroughly, removeall dirt, grease, leaves, etc. Store in a

You can fold your mower handle for storage.1. Squeeze the bottom ends of the lower

handle toward each other until thelower handle clears the handle bracket,then move handle forward.

2. Loosen upper handle mounting boltsenough to allow upper handle to befolded back.

FUEL SYSTEM

IMPORTANT: It is important to preventgum deposits from forming in essential fuelsystem parts such as carburetor, fuel filter,fuel hose, or tank during storage. Alcoholblended fuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol) can attract moisturewhich leads to separation and formationof acids during storage. Acidic gas candamage the fuel system of an engine whilein storage.

• Empty the fuel tank by starting the en-gine and letting it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty.

• Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

• Use fresh fuel next season.NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable al-ternative in minimizing the formation of fuelgum deposits during storage. Add stabilizerto gasoline in fuel tank or storage container.Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizercontainer. Run engine at least 10 minutesafter adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer toreach the carburetor. Do not empty the gastank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer.NOTE: FRESH START TM fuel cap andcartridge system automatically drips con-centrated fuel preserver into your fuel tankand is an acceptable alternative to addingfuel stabilizer.

ENGINE OIL

Drain oil (with engine warm) and replacewith clean engine oil. (See "ENGINE" inthe Maintenance section of this manual).CYLINDER

1. Remove spark plug.2. Pour one ounce (29 ml) of oil through

spark plug hole into cylinder.3. Pull starter handle slowly a few times

to distribute oil.

4. Replace with new spark plug.

OTHER

• Do not store gasoline from one seasonto another.

• Replace your gasoline can if your canstarts to rust. Rust and/or dirt in yourgasoline will cause problems.

• If possible, store your unit indoors andcover it to protect it from dust and dirt.

• Cover your unit with a suitable protec-tive cover that does not retain moisture.

Do not use plastic. Plastic cannotbreathe, which allows condensation toform and will cause your unit to rust.

IMPORTANT: Never cover mower while

engine and exhaust areas are still warm._I, CAUTION: Never store the lawn mower

with gasoline in the tank inside a buildingwhere fumes may reach an open flameor spark. Allow the engine to cool beforestoring in any enclosure.

II. OPERACION SOBRE LAS CUESTASLos accidentes ocurren con m_.s frecuencia enlas cuestas. Estos accidentes ocurren debido aresbaladas o caidas, las cuales pueden resultaren graves lesiones. Operar la recortadora encuestas requiere mayor concentraci6n. Si sesiente inseguro en una cuesta, no la recorte.HACER:• Puede recortar a trav_s de la superficie de

la cuesta, nunca hacia arriba y hacia abajo.Proceda con extrema precauci6n cuandocambie de direcci6n en las cuestas.

• Renueva todos los objetos extrafios, talescomo guijarros, ramas, etc.

• Debe prestar atenci6n a hoyos, baches oprotuberancias. Recuerde que la hierba altapuede esconder obst_tculos.

NO HACER:• No recorte cerca de pendientes, zanjas o

terraplenes. El operador puede perder latracci6n en los pies o el equilibrio.

• No recorte cuestas demasiado inclinadas.• No recorte en hierba mojada. La reducci6n

en la tracci6n de la pisada puede causarresbalones.

ii1.NINOSSe pueden producir accidentes tr_.gicos si eloperador no presta atenci6n a la presenciade los niSos. A menudo, los niSos se sientenatraidos por la m_tquina y por la actividad dela siega. Nunca suponga que los niSos van apermanecer en el mismo lugar donde los viopor Wtima vez.• Mantenga a los niSos alejados del Area de

la siega y bajo el cuidado estricto de otrapersona adulta responsable.

• Este alerta y apague la m_tquina si hay niSosque entran al _.rea.

• Antes y cuando este retrocediendo, mirehacia atr_ts y hacia abajo para verificar si hayniSos pequeSos.

• Nunca permita que los niSos operen la m_.-quina.

• Tenga un cuidado extra cuando se acerquea esquinas donde no hay visibilidad, a losarbustos, _trboles u otros objetos que puedeninterferir con su linea de visi6n.

IV. MANEJO SEGURO DE GASOLINAUsar mucha atenci6n cuando se maneja gaso-lina. La gasolina es extremamente inflamable ylos vapores son explosivos.• Apagar todos los cigarrillos, cigarros, pipas y

otras fuentes de ignici6n.• Usar solo un contenedor apropiado.• Nunca quitar el tap6n de la gasolina o aSadir

carburante con el motor en marcha. Esperarque el motor se enfrie antes de repostar lagasolina.

• Nunca repostar la m_.quina al interior de unlocal.

• Nunca guardar la m_tquina o el contenedorde gasolina donde hay una llama abierta,chispa o luz piloto como una caldera u otrosdispositivos.

• Nunca Ilenar contenedores en un vehiculo,en un cami6n o caravana con un forro depl_.stico. Colocar siempre los contenedoresen el suelo lejos de su vehiculo antes deIlenar.

• Quitar equipos que funcionan con gasolinadel cami6n o caravana y repostar en el suelo.Si esto no es posible, repostar dicho equipocon un contenedor port_.til, m_.s bien que conuna tobera de gasolina.

• Mantener la tobera en contacto con el bordodel depdsito de carburante o de la aperturadel contenedor siempre hasta terminar elabastecimiento. No usar un dispositivo decierre-apertura de la tobera.

• Si el carburante cae en la ropa que se Ileva,cambi_.rsela inmediatamente.

• Nunca Ilenar en exceso el depdsito decarburante. Colocar el tapdn de la gasolina yapretar de modo seguro.

V. SERVIClO• Nunca haga funcionar una m_.quina clentro

de un _.rea cerrada.• Nunca haga ajustes o reparaciones mientras

el motor este en march& Desconecte elcable de la bujfa, y mant_ngalo a ciertadistancia de esta para prevenir un arranqueaccidental.

• Mantenga las tuercas y los pernos, espe-cialmente los pernos del accesorio de lacuchilla, apretados y mantenga el equipo enbuenas condiciones.

• Nunca manipule de forma indebida losdispositivos de seguridad. Controle regular-mente su funcionamiento correcto.

• Mantenga la m_.quina libre de hierba, hojasu otras acumulaciones de desperdicio.Limpie los derrames de aceite o combustible.Permita que la m_.quina se enfrie antes dealmacenarla.

• Pare e inspeccione el equipo si le pega a unobjeto. Rep_.relo, si es necesario, antes dehacerlo arrancar.

• En ningOn caso hay que regular la altura delas ruedas mientras el motor est,. en marcha.

• Los componentes del receptor de la hierbavan sujetos a desgaste, da_os y deterioro,que pueden exponer las partes en mov-imiento o permitir que objetos sean dispara-dos. Controlar frecuentemente y cuando seanecesario sustituir con partes aconsejadaspor el fabricante.

• Las cuchillas de la segadora est_.n afiladasy pueden cortar. Cubrir las hojas o Ilevarguantes, y utilizar precauciones especialescuando se efecttJa mantenimiento sobre lasmismas.

• No cambie el ajuste del regulador del motorni exceda su velocidad.

• Mantener o sustituir las etiquetas deseguridad e instrucciones, cuando seanecesario.

_ADVERTENCIA: Este segadora viene equipado con un motor de combusti6n interna y no sedebe usar sobre, o cerca, de un terreno no desarrollado cubierto de bosques, de arbustos o decesped, o menos que el sistema de escape del motor venga equipado con un amortiguador dechispas que cumpla con las leyes locales o estatales (si existen). Si se usa un amortiguador dechispas, el operador debe mantenerlo en condiciones de trabajo eficientes.En el estado de California, la ley exige Io anterior (Secci6n 4442 del "California Public Re-sources Code"). Lea estas instrucciones y este manual completamente antes de tratar de montar u operar su sega-dora nueva.IMPORTANTE: Este cortac_sped viene SIN ACEITE O GASOLINA en el motor.Su segadora nueva ha sido montada en la f_.brica con la excepci6n de aquellas partes que se de-jaron sin montar por razones de envio. Todas las partes como las tuercas, las arandelas, los pernos,etc., que son necesarias pard completar el montaje han sido colocadas en la bolsa de partes. Pardasegurarse que su segadora funcione en forma segura y adecuada, todas las partes y los articulosde ferreteria que se monten tienen que ser apretados seguramente. Use las herramientas correctas,como sea necesario, pard asegurar que se aprieten adecuadamente.

PARA REMOVER LA SEGADORA DELA CAJA DE CARTON1. Remueva las partes sueltas que se incluyen

con la segadora.2. Cortelasdosesquinasdelos extremosdelacaja

de cart6n y tienda el panel del extremo piano.3. Remueva todo el material de empaque, ex-

cepto la cuSa entre el mango superior y elinferior, y la cuSa que sujeta la barra de loscontrol que exige la presencia del operadorjunto con el mango superior.

4. Haga rodar la segadora hacia afuera de lacaja de cart6n y revfsela cuidadosamentepard verificar si todavia quedan partessueltas adicionales.

COMO PREPARAR SU SEGADORAPARA DESDOBLAR EL MANGOIMPORTANTE: Despliegue el mango conmucho cuidado pard no pellizcar o daSar loscables de control.1. Levante los mangos hasta que la secci6n

del mango inferior se asegure en su lugar,en la posici6n pard segar.

2. Remueva la cuSa protector& levante la secci6ndel mango superior hasta su lugar en el mangoinferior, y apriete ambas manillas del mango.

3. Remueva la cuSa del mango que sujeta labarra de los control que exige la presenciadel operador junto con el mango superior.

El mango de la segadora puede ajustarsesegt3n le acomode pard segar. Refierase a"AJUSTE DEL MANGO" en la secci6n deServicio y Ajustes de este manual.

PARA MONTAR EL RECOGEDOR DECESPED1. Ponga el bastidor del recogedor de c_sped

COMO USAR SU SEGADORAVELOCIDAD DEL MOTORLa velocidad del motor se estableci6 en la f_t-brica para un rendimiento 6ptimo. La velocidadno se puede ajustar.

NTROL DE ZONA DEL MOTORPRECAUCION: Las regulaciones federales

exigen que se instale un control para el motoren esta segadora para reducir a un minimo elriesgo de lesionarse debido al contacto con lacuchilla. Por ningt3n motivo trate de eliminarla funci6n del control del operador. La cuchillagira cuando el motor ester funcionando.• Su segadora viene equipada con una barra

de controles que exigen la presencia deloperador, Io que requiere que el operadoreste detr_.s del mango de la segadora parahacerla arrancar y operarla.

CONTROL DE LA IMPULSION• La autopropulsi6n se controla manteniendo

la palanca de mando operador presenteabajo hacia el mango y tirando la barra deaccionamiento hasta la mango. Cuanto m_tscercano se tira la barra hacia el mango, m_.sr_tpida ir_t la unidad.

• El movimiento hacia adelante se detienecuando sea la palanca de mando operadorpresente o la barra de accionamiento sesueltan. Para detener el movimiento haciaadelante sin apagar el motor, soltar s61o labarra de accionamiento. Mantener la palancade mando operador presente abajo contra elmango para continuar a cortar sin autopro-pulsi6n.

AVlSO: Si despu_s haber desenganchadode la palanca de control, la segaclora no roclahacia atr_ts, empuje la segadora un poco haciaadelante para desenganchar las ruedas de laimpulsi6n.• Para mantener el mando conectado cuando

se da la vuelta a una esquina, empujar elmango para levantar las ruedas delanterasdel terreno mientras se gira la cortadora.

AJUSTE DEL MANDOOcasionalmente, el sistema de mando puede"aflojarse', provocando una disminuci6n de lavelocidad. Hay un tornillo de apriete manualen la parte trasera de la sede del manclo paraapretar la tensi6n del cable. Procecler de lasiguiente manera:1. Apagar la unidad y desconectar el cable de

bujia de la bujia.2. Rote tornillo de apriete manual a la izqui-

erda para tensar el cable impulsor.3. Opere la segadora para probar la velocidad

del mecanismo.4. Si las condiciones no mejoran despues

de los pasos descritos (la velocidad haciaadelante queda la misma), la correa detransmisi6n est,. desgastada y tiene que sersustituida.

AVlSO: Si el segadora comienza "a arrastrarse"delantero, el cable impulsor es demasiadotensaclo. Rote tornillo de apriete manual a laderecha para aflojar el cable impulsor.

PARA AJUSTAR LA ALTURA DE CORTELevante las ruedas para el corte bajo y baje lasruedas para el corte alto., ajuste la altura decorte para que se acomode a sus requisitos. Laposici6n del medio es la mejor para la mayoriade los c_spedes.• Para cambiar la altura de corte, empuje la

palanca del ajustador hacia la rued& Muevala rueda hacia arriba o hacia abajo de modoque se acomocle a sus requisitos. Asegt3reseque todas las ruedas queden igualmenteajustadas.

AVlSO: El ajustaclor esta correctamentecolocado cuando las orejas de la placa est_.ninsertadas en el agujero del mango. Tambi_n,los ajustes de 9 posiciones (si equipado) per-miten que el mango pueda ser movido entre lasorejas de la placa.

• Abra la puerta trasera y remueva la tap6nacolchadora. Gu_.rdela en un lugar seguro.

• Ahora puede instalar el recogedor o el des-viador de recortes opcional.

• Para volver a la operaci6n de acolchamientoo descarga, el tap6n acolchador en la aber-tura de descarga de la segadora.

PARA VACIAR EL RECOGEDOR DE ClaSPED1. Levante el recogedor de c_sped usando el

mango del bastidor.2. Remueva el recogedor de c_sped, con los

recortes, de debajo del mango de la sega-dora.

3. Vacie los recortes de la bolsa.AVISO" No arrastre la bolsa cuando la vacie;se producir_, un desgaste innecesario.

3. Enrocar el tapdn del carburante en eldep6sito del carburante despues de Ilenarel dep6sito con gasolina.

Sustituir el cartucho cuando est,. vacio (aproxi-madamente uno cada temporada). Controlarvisualmente el nivel del preservador.

PELIGRO: El fluido del cartucho esDANINO O LETAL SI SE TRAGA. Evitar elcontacto con los ojos, la piel o la ropa. No asirlointernamente. No inhalar el vapor clel fluiclo.Mantener lejos clel alcance de los nifios. Si setraga, Ilamar inmecliatamente al medico.

ANTES DE HACER ARRANCAR ELMOTOR

AGREGUE ACEITESu segadora fue enviacla sin aceite en el motor.Para el tipo y el graclo clel aceite a utilizar, veael "MOTOR" en la secci6n del Mantenimiento deeste manual._PRECAUCl6N: NO sobrellene el motor conaceite, o fumar_, pesa clemante clel silenciaclorcuando Io valla a arrancar.

1. AsegOrese que la segaclora este nivelacla.2. Remueva la varila mecliclora de aceite clel tubo

de clesarga de aceite.3. Ustecl recibe un envase de aceite con la

uniclacl. Vierta lentamente el envase enterode aceite en el tubo de relleno clel motor.

AVlSO: El terrapl_n inicial clel aceite requieresolamente 18 onzas clebiclo al aceite residualen el motor de la prueba de caliclacl de 100%clel fabricante. AI cambiar el aceite pueclenecesitar 20 onzas.4. Inserte y apriete la varilla meclidora de aceite.IMPORTANTE:• Revise el nivel clel aceite antes de cacla uso.

Agregue aceite si es necesario. Llene hasta lalinea de Ileno en la varilla mecliclora de nivel.

• Cambie el aceite clespu_s de 25 horas deoperaci6n o una vez por temporacla. Pueclenecesitar cambiar el aceite m_.s a menuclocuanclo las concliciones son polvorosas o su-cias. Vea "PARA CAMBIAR EL ACEITE DELMOTOR" en la seccion de Mantenimiento deeste manual.

FIJAR EL CARTUCHO DEL TAPON DELCARBURANTESu cortac_specl est,. clotado de un tap6n delcarburante y un cartucho preservaclor decarburante continuo especial FRESH START M.V_ase la informaci6n y las instrucciones con-tenidas en el cartucho FRESH STAR-PM.1. Fijar el cartucho en el fonclo clel tap6n clel

carburante.NOTA: No quitar el papel plateaclo de precintoen el laclo clel cartucho que se fija en el tap6nclel carburante.

PARA PARAR EL MOTOR• Para parar el motor, suelte la barra de con-

troles que exigen la presencia del operador.PARA HACER ARRANCAR EL MOTORAVlSO: Debido alas capas protectoras del mo-tor, una cantidad peque_a de humo puede es-tar presente durante el uso inicial del productoy se debe considerar normal.AVlSO: Su motor viene equipado con unsistema de estrangulaci6n autom_.tico. Norequiere ser cebado o obturado antes dearrancar.• Para hacer arrancar un motor, sujete la barra

de controles que exigen la presencia deloperador abajo en el mango y tire el mangodel arrancador r_.pidamente. No permita queel cord6n arrancador se devuelva abruptam-ente.

_ONSEJOS PARA SEGARPRECAUCION: No utilizar dispositivos anti-

paja de la hoja en la segadora ya que estosaccesorios son peligrosos, pueden daSar susegaclora y anular su garantia.• Bajo ciertas condiciones, tal como cesped

muy alto, puecle ser necesario el elevar laaltura del corte para reducir el esfuerzonecesario para empujar la segadora y paraevitar sobrecargar el motor, dejando mon-tones de recortes de cesped. Puecle que seanecesario reducir la velocidad del recorridoy/o haga funcionar la segadora sobre el Areapor segunda vez.

• Para un corte muy pesado, reduzca el anchodel corte pasando parcialmente por encimadel lugar anteriormente cortado y sieguelentamente.

• Para un mejor ensacado del c_sped y para lamayoria de las condiciones de corte, la velo-cidad del motor debe ajustarse a la posici6nde R,_,PIDO.

• Los poros en los recogedores de cesped detela pueden Ilenarse con mugre y polvo conel uso y los recogedores recaudar_.n menoscesped. Para evitar este, rode el recogedorcon la manguera de agua regularmente yd_jelo secarse antes de usarlo.

• Mantenga la parte superior del motor, alred-edor del arrancador, despejada y sin recortesde cesped y paja. Esto ayudar_, el flujo delaire del motor y extender,, su duraci6n.

CONSEJOS PARA SEGAR Y ACOL-CHARIMPORTANTE: Para obtener el mejorrenclimiento mantenga la caja de la segadorasin acumulacion de cesped y basura. Vea"LIMPIEZA" en la seccion de Mantenimento deeste manual.

• La cuchilla acolchadora especial va a volvera cortar los recortes de cesped muchasveces, y los reduce en tamaSo, de modo quesi se caen en el cesped se van a dispesarentre este y no se van a notar. Tambi_n, elc_sped acolchado se va a deshacer r_.pidam-ente entregando substancias nutritivas parael c_sped. Siempre acolche con la velocidaddel motor (cuchilla) m_.s alta, pues asi seobtendr_, la mejor acci6n de recorte de lascuchillas.

• Evite cortar el c_sped cuando est_ mojado.El cesped mojado tiende a formar montonese interfiere con la acci6n de acolchado.La mejor hora para segar el cesped estemprano en la tarde. A esa hora _ste se hasecado y el _.rea reci_n cortada no quedar_.expuesta al sol directo.

• Para obtener los mejores resultados, ajustela altura del corte de la segadora de modoque _sta corte solamente el tercio superiorde las hojas de cesped. En el caso de que elc_sped haya crecido demasiado, puede sernecesario el elevar la altura del corte parareducir el esfuerzo necesario para empujar lasegadora y para evitar sobrecargar el motor,dejando montones de recortes de cesped.Para un cesped muy pesado, reduzca el an-cho del corte pasando por encima del lugaranteriormente cortado y siegue lentamente.

• Ciertos tipos de cesped y sus condicionespueden exigir que un Area tenga que seracolchada por segunda vez para escondercompletamente los recortes. Cuando se hagael segundo corte, siegue atravesado (enforma perpendicular) a la pasada del primercorte.

RUEDAS DE IMPULSIONRevise las ruedas de impulsi6n delanteras cadavez antes de segar, para asegurarse de que semueven libremente. en el sentido contrario en que giran lasmanillas del reloj.

5. Remueva la cuchilla y los articulos de fer-reteria adjuntadores (el perno, la arandelade seguridad y la arandela endurecida).

AVISO" Remueva el adaptador de la cuchilla yrevise el cubo interior de la ranura del adap-tador de la cuchilla. La ranura tiene que estaren buenas condiciones para que funcione enforma adecuada. Cambie el adaptador si est,.da_ado.

PARA CAMBIAR LA CUCHILLA

1. Ponga el adaptador de la cuchilla en elcigue_al del motor. Asegt3rese que la ranuradel adaptador y que el chavetero del cigue-_al esten alineados.

2. Ponga la cuchilla en el adaptador de estaalineando los dos (2) agujeros en la cuchillacon las salientes elevadas en el adaptador.

3. Asegt3rese de que el borde de salida dela cuchilla (opuesto al borde afilado) est_hacia arriba hacia el motor.

4. Instale el perno de la cuchilla con la aran-dela de seguridad y la arandela endurecidaen el adaptador de la cuchilla y el cigue_al.

5. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchillay la caja de la segadora y apriete el pernode la cuchilla gir_tndolo en el sentido en quegiran las manillas del reloj.

• La torsi6n para apretar recomendada es de35 - 40 pies libras.

• Para revisar el balance de la cuchilla, claveun clavo en una viga o en la pared. Dejealrededor de una pulgada de un clavo rectoexpuesto. Ponga el agujero central de lacuchilla sobre la cabeza del clavo. Si lacuchilla ester balanceada debe permaneceren la posici6n horizontal. Si cualquiera delos extremos de la cuchilla se mueve haciaabajo, afile el extremo pesado hasta que estaquede balanceada.

RECOGEDOR DE CESPED• El recogedor de cesped puede ser rociado

con el agua de la manguera pero tiene queestar seco cuando se vaya a usar.

• Revise su recogedor de cesped a menudopara verificar si est,. da_ado o deteriorado.Se va a desgastar con el uso normal. Si senecesita cambiar el recogedor, c_.mbielo30

solamente por uno que sea aprobado por elfabricante. De el ntJmero del modelo de lasegadora cuando Io ordene.

CAJA DE ENGRANAJES• Para mantener el sistema de impulsi6n

funcionando en forma adecuada, la caja deengranajes y el _trea alrededor de la impulsi6ntienen que mantenerse limpias y sin acumu-laci6n de basura. Limpie debajo de la cubiertade la impulsi6n dos veces por temporada.

• La caja de engranajes se Ilena con lubricantehasta el nivel adecuado en la f_tbrica. LatJnica vez que el lubricante necesita atenci6nes cuando se le ha prestado servicio a lacaja de engranajes.

• Si se necesita lubricante, use solamente ELFMultis EP00. No use substitutos.

MOTORLUBRICAOIONUse solamente aceite de detergente de alta cali-dad clasificado con la clasificaci6n SG-SL de ser-vicio API. Seleccione la calidad de viscosidad SAEsegt3n su temperatura de operaci6n esperada.

2. Remueva la tapa del depdsito del aceite;d_jela a un lado en una superficie limpia.

3. Incline la cortadora de c_sped por estecostado tal como se muestra y purgue elaceite en un recipiente id6neo. Mueva lasegadora de atr_.s para adelante para re-mover todo el aceite que se haya quedadoatrapado dentro del motor.

4. Limpie todo el aceite derramado en la sega-dora yen el lado del motor.

5. Echar aceite despacio en el conducto delaceite, par_tndose a intervalos regulares paracontrolar el nivel del aceite con la varilla.

6. Parar de a_adir aceite cuando se alcanza lasepal de Ileno (FULL) en la varilla. Esperar unminuto para dejar que el aceite se arregle.

7. Contint3e agregando cantidades pequeasde aceite y vuelva a inspeccionar la varillamedidora settles del nivel de aciete en Ileno(FULL). NO sobrellene el motor con aceite,o fumar_, pesa demante del silenciadorcuando Io valla a arrancar.

9. Vuelva a conectar el alambre de la bujia a _sta.

FILTRO DE AIRESu motor puede sufrir averias y funcionar demanera incorrecta con un filtro del aire sucio.Sustituir el papel del cartucho una vez al a_oo tras 100 horas de funcionamiento, m_.s amenudo si se utiliza en condiciones de sucie-dad y polvo particulares.PARA LIMPIAR EL FILTRO DE AIRE

• Limpie el motor a menudo para evitar quese acumule la basura. Un motor tapado fun-ciona m_.s caliente y se acorta su duraci6n.

• Mantenga las superficies pulidas y las rue-das sin gasolina, aceite, etc.

• No recomendamos el uso de una manguerade jardfn para limpiar la segadora a menosque el sistema electrico, el silenciador, elfiltro de aire y el carburador esten tapadospara evitar que les entre el agua. El agua enel motor puede acortar la duraci6n de _ste.

LIMPIE DEBAJO DE LA CUBIERTA DE LAIMPULSIONLimpie debajo de la cubierta de la impulsi6n porIo menos dos veces cada temporada. Raspe de-bajo de la cubierta con un cuchillo para masillao con una herramienta parecida, para removertoda acumulaci6n de cesped o basura en la parteinferior de la cubierta de la impulsi6n.

4. Remueva la cuchilla y la defensa en contradel desperdicio.
