The Physical Education team at South Lake
Middle School is back and excited for another
fun year of sports, games, and activities! For
those of you that are new to SLMS, my name is
Vince Doan and I am one of the PE teacher.
Sports and fitness is a passion of mine so I hope
to inspire students to make positive choices
when it comes to their health and fitness. Along
with teaching PE, I also run Lunchtime Sports,
Tournament of Champions, and Guys Got Game.
I am very excited about this upcoming year and
wanted to share what we have been doing in
my PE class this past month.

The first full month of school is in the books! We are off to a great start in physical
education class. We started dressing out the first week of the September and since then
students have played Mamba ball and Team Handball. They have been practicing basic
throwing and catching skills. We also had a Fun Friday where students participated in a
friendly competition of Capture-the-Flag against Mrs. Benner’s class. We ended this month
with a review of the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) that they will be participating in March.
Students practiced fitness areas including: curl-ups, push-ups test, and the mile run.
Our next activity: Flag football!

Instructional Assistant, Coach Garcia.
Lunchtime sports started the second week of September for the 2017-2018 school year.
Students were given one week to fill out a roster to compete in the Mamba ball tournament.
We have about 250 students signed-up for lunchtime sports! 7th grade participants compete
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. 8th grader participants compete on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. Each team plays at least 4 regular season games prior to the play-offs.
Check out next month’s newsletter to see which team will be crowned champion!

Guys Got Game (G3) is a brand new program at SLMS led by myself. It is an
all-boys program created to build confident young leaders through
athletics and team building activities. There will be two sessions of G3, fall
and spring; lasting 12 weeks long. The fall session will be all 7th grade boys
and will focus on the transition to middle school. While the spring session
will be all 8th graders and focuses on transitioning into high school. The fall
session is already under way! We currently have 27 boys in the program.
I am very excited for this year’s Harvest Cup
Soccer Tournament! There were about 35 boys
and 20 girls that came to try-out for this year’s
team. The boy’s team is led by Coach Miller and
the girl’s team is led by Coach Corfield. Thank
you to both coaches for volunteering their time
and thank you to all of the athletes that came
out to try-outs. This year, the tournament is
currently scheduled for October 22nd. Final
schedule will be sent out to confirm.
Hope to see everyone there!

Students in my class will start the Flag Football unit the first week of October. It will be our first
official full unit and will last 3 weeks. Flag football activities are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays and
Fridays. Students will be participating in fitness activities on Wednesdays and Thursdays. On
Wednesdays they will participate in cardio and Thursdays will be our strength-training day. Students
will also participate in another physical fitness practice test to support progress. Along with these
various activities, the 7th graders will begin their first SEAMS lesson with Officer Gramer. SEAMS (Self-
Empowerment at Middle School) is a six session, interactive lesson that focuses on the needs of middle
school students. With the first full month behind us, there are lots of exciting things in PE to look
forward to in October!
