I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the Class of 2017. As the first class to enter Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, these students will have a spe- cial place in our school’s history. We wish them the best, as they begin the journey to becoming dental professionals. In this issue we include the list of our faculty who appeared on New Jersey Monthly’s 2013 list of Top Dentists. Our faculty and alumni dominated the list, once again. That is indeed a testament to the world- class education offered here at RSDM. I am certain that in the future, I will see many members of the Class of 2017 on that very same list. I hope everyone enjoys the last days of summer and has a safe Labor Day weekend. Sincerely, The incoming class—the Class of 2017—will be the ϐirst to enter the newly named Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM). Like previous classes, the students will be getting one of the best dental educations available, provided by top‐notch teachers and researchers. This year’s class, which is 91 members strong, was selected from a pool of 2,132 applicants. A number of them graduated from Rutgers, as well as other prestigious universities, such as Columbia, Cornell, Penn, Syracuse, Tufts and Vanderbilt. They live as far away as San Jose, CA, and Chicago, Il, and as nearby as Bloomϐield, Cranford and West Orange, NJ. By the numbers the class is also quite impressive. The 52 females and 39 males have an overall GPA of 3.5 and an overall science GPA of 3.37. A total of 26 students completed one or more pipeline programs, and there are ϐive legacy students. New student Leonard Giordano says he is extremely happy to be at RSDM. “I always wanted to be a dentist, ever since I was a kid,” he says. “And, it seems like my new classmates are very eager to work together. That is comforting, because we have a lot of hard work ahead of us. But I’m really looking forward to it.” RSDM Welcomes its First Class Fran Devonshire, RN, BSN, of oral and maxillofacial surgery, helps Patricia Larosiliere, ’17, learn to use a bagmask to deliver venƟlaƟon, during a CPR class.
