    Club members and are designed to accommodate all fitness levels. We

    offer over 100 classes each week featuring yoga, cardio kickboxing,

    studio cycling, Tai Chi, plus many more. Our innovative classes andquality instruction will enhance your hearts, minds and bodies. Pick

    a time that fits your busy schedule and come when you can.

    Our Most Popular ClassesAbs a Bak Intensity: to25 minutes dedicated solely to strengtheningyour core.

    cao Kkbox Intensity: toHigh intensity kickboxing routines with jabs and up-percuts, this class will help you increase your stamina,coordination, and strength as you learn basic martialarts techniques.

    c ta Intensity: toLed by a certified personal trainer, participants perform

    exercises using free weights, machines, medicine balls,and plyo-balls to improve both lower and upper bodystrength, agility, abdominal strength, and flexibility.

    Group Cycling Intensity: toA fun, high-energy indoor cycling workout that uses

    music to make your body move. This class combinescycling techniques with the sports psychology meth-

    ods employed by athletes of all disciplines. First timeriders should arrive at least 10 minutes early to adjust

    600 Teams and 10,000 participants per year. What team are you on?

    Intramural Sports offers you the opportunity to participate in your favorite

    sport on a competitive or recreational level. Leagues are available in a

    wide variety of indoor and outdoor sports year-round; including basketball,

    soccer, football, softball, volleyball, tennis, and dodgeball.

    Who Can Play?Anyone with a Cal Rec Club membership can join anIntramural Sports team. You can form a team of your

    own this could include anyone from your pals inChem 1A lab to faculty and staff members that can stillbring it, to your Greek brothers and sisters or show

    up as a free agent and be placed on a team.

    Dont Have a Team?If you dont have a team, you are considered a FreeAgent. Although not all sports offer Free Agent teams,

    Free Agents may sign onto a leagues Free Agent teamwhen available. The Free Agent fee is $25 per sport.

    Dates and DetailsLeague play for Spring 2009 begins Tuesday,February 17, and runs for seven weeks plus

    a playoff for each leagues top finishers.* Games areheld at campus rec facilities and are generallyscheduled in the evenings, Sunday through Friday.

    SailingThere is no better place to sail than the San FranciscoBay! Graduates of our Basic and Intermediate Sailingcourses will be prepared to safely handle a Coronado

    15 sailboat in winds up to 15 knots. Once you completeboth Basic and Intermediate Sailing or a Private Check-out youll be set to rent sailboats from Cal Adventures.

    Sea KayakingThe Cal Adventures Sea Kayaking Program providesexperiences that range from gentle days on the Bayto high-sea thrills. With multiple courses to choose

    from, youll get the right amount of instruction whetheryoure looking to build on existing skills, or are a firsttime paddler.

    WindsurfingThe Cal Adventures Windsurfing Program brings thetotal novice to the point of high-speed thrills in onlyone season. Experienced and enthusiastic teachers,

    and sweat. Please note that Cal Rec Club membership is required to

    participate in Open Recreation.

    BasketballHoops heaven: seven courts, three gyms and tons of

    open rec hours.

    Cardiovascular EquipmentWeve got treadmills, stairmasters, elliptical trainers,rowing machines, stationary bikes, and more. Our

    machines over 100 and counting are there for youwhenever were open; find them at the RSF and at the

    Strawberry Canyon Rec Area.

    Racquet SportsTennis, Racquetball, Handball, Squash, Badminton orTable Tennis; whatever the sport, weve got a court for

    you. Racquetball, Handball, Squash, Badminton andTable Tennis are available at the RSF; tennis courts arelocated throughout campus for locations visitwww.recsports.berkeley.edu/tennis .

    TracksHit the track at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field aneight lane, Olympic-class track located just west of the

    RSF. Or, take in stellar views of the ba y as you run onour dirt track at the Golden Bear Rec Center.

    TrailsJust behind the Strawberry Canyon Rec Area the

    Fire Trail awaits hikers and runners. This seven mile(roundtrip) trail twists its way up through StrawberryCanyon, offering views of the Campanile, the Golden

    Gate Bridge and Mt. Tamalpais. The trail starts at theSCRA parking lot and follows Centennial Drive for ashort way before veering deeper into the canyon. Note:

    Use this trail wisely take water, bring a friend, and useonly during daylight hours.

    Swimming4 pools and 32 lanes mean plenty of opportunity forrec swimming. More detail on our pools:

    Spieker PoolWorkout in the same pool used by the mens and wom-ens swim teams: 18 lanes, 25 yards, 79-80 degrees F.

    Golden Bear PoolThis 25 yard, six lane pool maintained at a comfor-

    table 80 degrees is ideal for fitness training orlap swimming.

    Hearst North PoolMarble decking? Colonnaded Nymphs ringing thepool? Sounds like a bacchanalian fantasy, but actu-

    ally this is a 33 1/3 yard, four lane pool that sits onthe second floor of the Phoebe Hearst Gymnasium.Designed by Julia Morgan in 1927, it is one of UC

    Berkeleys most significant buildings.

    Weight RoomsOur three RSF weight rooms total 8,500 square feet

    and are equipped with Cybex machines, Cybex VR2stations, a complete free weight set-up, Iron Grip andTri Bar dumbbells, adjustable benches, Olympic squat

    racks, Gravitron pull-up stations and way more. For amellow lifting session, head up to our newest weightroom at the Strawberry Canyon Rec Area where youll

    find peace and tranquility among the oaks.

    VolleyballIndoor volleyball courts available year-round in the RSF.

    Equipment RentalsMembers may check out sports equipment such as

    racquetball rackets, basketballs, weight belts, locks,and reading racks at the Guest Services counter in the

    Haas Recreation Locker Room. All you need is your CalRec Club membership card.

    Court ReservationsTo reserve a tennis, racquetball, handball or squash

    court, call Guest Services at 510.642.8345 or stop bythe desk located in the Haas Recreation Locker Room.

    Massage therapy can be an integral part of your health maintenance

    program. It promotes relaxation, helps relieve sore muscles and enhances

    athletic performance. Our massage therapists are all certified by an ac-

    credited massage therapy school and have completed a minimum

    500 instructional hours in massage therapy and its many techniques.

    Martial Arts

    Cal Recreational Sports

    The UC Martial Arts Program is dedicated to providing outstanding

    martial arts instruction to the UC Berkeley campus and surrounding

    community. The program is a world renowned leader in the promotion

    and development of the martial arts, and is a model for other

    universities. New members are always welcome.

    Martial Arts ClubsJudoBased on the ancient Japanese art of self-defense

    called Jujitsu, it is concerned with throws and fallingtechniques in addition to physical conditioning andtotal health.

    KarateKarate is the Japanese art of self-defense. All styles ofKarate are incorporated into one general class.

    TaekwondoTaekwondo, the way of foot and fist, is based on theancient Korean methods of self-defense.

    TaijiTaiji emphasizes balance and coordination, reduced

    stress and improved health.

    WushuA challenging fusion of Chinese martial arts andperformance.

    YongmudoA self-defense oriented discipline that makes use of wrist

    twisting, joint locks, kicks, punches, holds, rolls, and falls.

    near the Haas Locker Room Guest Counter. Thislocation presents a calm, soothing atmosphere that isperfect for massage therapy sessions. To find us, come

    to the Haas Locker Room Guest Counter; go through

    the turnstiles and walk to the left, toward the womenslocker room. The door to the massage center islocated just to the left of the entrance to the womenslocker room.

    MembershipCal Recreational Sports

    The Cal Rec Club offers memberships to students, faculty, staff,

    alumni, UC Berkeley retirees, and members of the community.

    We also offer locker room only memberships for bicycle commuters, short

    term memberships such as day passes, and swim-only day passes.

    Membership Types & Fees

    Cal Students: $10 per semester. Spousesof currently enrolled Cal students may purchase anAssociated membership (see below).

    Associated Students: $140 per semester.Open to spouses of currently enrolled Cal Students.

    Note: the student must have a current CRC member-ship to sponsor their spouse. Open to students of

    certain educational institutions. Minimum age: 17.

    Cal Emeriti/Retiree: $296 per year.Includes 5 complimentary day passes per year. Opento Lawrence Berkeley Lab retirees.

    Cal Faculty and Staff: $420 per year/$185 per semester. Annual membership includes 5complimentary day passes per year and monthly payroll

    deduction option. Open to Lawrence Berkeley Lab
