As Acting Headmaster, Paul O’Leary took on the leadership of the College with a mandate to continue the strategic plan and the facilities and advancement initiatives – and he did not shy away from the challenging task. It should also be noted that he spent a lot of his time reorganizing the faculty and positions. We’re seeing the fruit of his leadership this year.

Beginning the 2011-2012 academic year, we have a very capable and passionate leader in Stephen Beatty ’86 as our Headmaster, paired with the well-honed and proven skills of Paul O’Leary as Assistant Headmaster. Along with the other members of the Senior Leadership team, we have a formidable force steering the ship.

Under the skilled watch of Facilities Committee Chair Michael Barker, the campus redevelopment project is in full swing, which will transform our College to match the quality of what we have to offer our boys and our staff in their daily pursuits of inspired learning.

Advancement is in full swing and making great strides daily under the leadership of Advancement Committee Co-Chairs Guy Burry ‘77 and Wanda Ho.

The finances of the College continue to be managed prudently under the watchful eye of Wanda Ho, Treasurer, Finance and Audit Committee Chair, and Cathy Bateman, the incoming Treasurer.

And to top it off, enrolment is at an all-time high – a clear vote of confidence in RSGC from the larger community.

I’ll end my final message as Chair with a story of recently bumping into one of our faculty on the street while he was out for a walk with his

family. He said it was commonly held amongst the staff of RSGC that the College was entering a “golden age.” He said it was believed that these years would be referenced in the future as having been as great and influential in the formation of the College as those of Jack Wright during its developing years.

It’s just like a great sports franchise. Remember when the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series? Now, years later, people refer back to that time and always will. It’s part of something intangible, memorable, timeless.

If the golden age of the College is upon us, I’m pleased to have been a small part of the silver years.

I’m also glad that my two boys have been part of this exceptional franchise – one as a lifer – and are both proud to call themselves Georgians.

I, of course, will always remain in the camp of the “want-to-be” Georgians.

Message from the Chair

My two years as Chair have flown by, as I suspect they did for those who held this position before me. I’m very

pleased to welcome Ruth Woods as the incoming Chair of the Board of Governors and Paul Clark ’85 as Vice-Chair. I know that they, along with the rest of the Board and Senior Leadership, will guide Royal St. George’s College to its next level of success in exceptional boys’ education.

Two years ago, RSGC welcomed a new Head and undertook a new strategic plan, followed by a facilities plan and an advancement plan – all of which were endorsed by the Board at the January 2010 meeting.

transitions are also challenged to show their true character. It is against the backdrop of transition that RSGC truly thrived in the 2010-11 school year.

At the heart of the College are the faculty and staff who, without exception, go above and beyond the span of their duties and responsibilities to create an exceptional learning experience for the boys. The energy of the adults in the school is contagious and it sets the tone for the school’s Georgian culture. So many positive initiatives at RSGC are organic, grass-root, staff-led ideas or concepts. All are underpinned by the central question, “How will this improve the school experience for the boys?” In a period of the

College’s history that is marked by transition at the top, it is the commitment and ingenuity among the faculty and staff that have shone through. We are so proud to work with these colleagues.

As we approach the 50th anniversary of the founding of the College, a milestone we will celebrate in 2014, there is so much to be proud of and so much to look forward to. Our campus transformation is underway, our reputation in the city is excellent, our graduates continue to thrive, our boys continue to be known and loved, and the Georgian spirit lives on.

Message from the Headmaster

It is customary in the College’s Annual Report for the Headmaster to reflect on the challenges and accomplishments of the previous school year. In the spirit of collaboration, Mr. O’Leary and Mr. Beatty, Acting and Incoming Headmaster respectively, are co-authoring the message from the Headmaster’s office for the 2010-11 Annual Report.

We often remind the boys that it is in difficulty or transition that the true depth of their character will be tested.

the Pristine Family for the extra efforts in this venture.

We also added a wrapping sale led by Susan Barker. The wrapping was supplied by Innisbrook and the campaign was very successful.

A very special and highly successful fundraiser, An Evening with Molly Johnson, took place on April 2. Molly, a huge fan of RSGC and our music program, has been eager to organize an event to raise funds for a brand new Georgian music scholarship. Her voice, both on stage and off, is the reason this new initiative was possible. Molly, thanks to you and your committee of wonderful volunteers.

The annual Used Textbook Sale is held each spring. Textbooks are collected from the boys throughout exam week with the sale held the following week. Jennifer Knowles and Susan Barker skilfully took our sale to a new level by gathering a competent group of volunteers and breaking down the various tasks to even out the workload.

In addition to raising funds for RSGC, the Guild supports the school with our volunteers and planning of important events.

The Parent Ambassador program, lead again by Lynn Factor, continued its important role in the success of the Admissions program.

The Guild took a large role in helping host the Fulford Debating Tournament in November. This is a large tournament requiring 80 volunteers. Erin Coffey, Lynn Morse and Stephanie Martin deserve a huge thank you for assembling a large group of parents to act as judges for this important event.

Nancy McConnell started a very popular program called Parent Connections. Nancy organized three events for parent participation. The first two were historic morning tours of parts of Toronto followed by lunch. The tours were well attended, with over 20 parents coming along. The final event was a tour of the Evergreen Brickworks, including lunch.

There are many other areas in which the Guild plays an active role in the school, including library, choir, band, advancement support, social, class parents and community service.

It has been an honour to serve as the President of the Georgian Parents’ Guild during its 47th year. Being part of the Guild and working with many dedicated parent volunteers has been a wonderful experience. I want to thank my High 5, who have helped me immeasurably over the past year. Thanks to Nancy McConnell, Kimberly Cudney, Marilyn Beatty and Carolyn Cullen. I’m certain Kimberly will do a wonderful job as President of the Guild during the 2011-2012 school year.

Royal St. George’s College is a very special school. I feel very fortunate to be a part of it.

Message from the President of the Georgian Parents’ Guild

Royal St. George’s College continues to have an actively engaged parent community. I think it’s the dedication of

this parent community that helps make RSGC a very special school.

This year, the Guild will give the College a cheque for $50,000 toward the Capital Campaign. This donation is part of a larger gift totalling $250,000 over five years. This is quite a feat for a small school!

The monies are raised through five major events.

Sarah Hillyer and Victoria Switzman did an amazing job for November’s Mistletoe Market. They assembled a fabulous team of parent volunteers, brought in new vendors and helped make the 13th annual event the most successful ever. Thanks to Mary Jo Looby for an incredible cocktail party.

The cheese fundraiser led by Marijka Prokipchuk, Elizabeth Lawler, Kimberly Cudney and Lynne Dagleish was a great success. The Cheese Boutique supplied us with an amazing array of cheeses. Special thanks to

2011 has been a banner year for the alumni of Royal St. George’s

College. We have a record number of alumni on staff, including Scott Ackley ’04, Jeff Enfield ’97, Charles Fowler ’86, Rickesh Kotecha ’00, Adrian Thornbury ’87, and of course, our newest Headmaster, Stephen Beatty ’86. Our alumni have also taken their most active role on the RSGC Board of Governors, including Guy Burry ’77, Bruce Chapple ’87, Paul Clark ’85, Robert Keilty ’81 and Jesse Parker ’01. Our alumni have also taken the lead on RSGC’s Honouring Our Past | Building Our Future Campaign, with Co-chair Guy Burry ’77 and past presidents of the RSGCAA Jamie Lint ’98 and Jamie Peters ’90 all taking active roles.

The Alumni Executive is embracing this spirit of leadership at RSGC and creating new events and initiatives to engage our alumni and the broader RSGC community. I’d like to take a few moments to highlight these initiatives and the alumni leading them.

Networking and Mentorship: Alex Edmison ’02, our new Networking and Mentorship Chair, coordinates events like Grad Speed Mentoring and the new Alumni Speed Mentoring. Colin Watson ’94 started Grad Speed Mentoring after Guy Burry ’77 mentioned the York University Alumni Association’s success with the event. And every year since then, nearly 40 alumni come back to RSGC to answer questions about their university and professional experiences and to mentor graduating students. Grads, parents and our alumni volunteers continue to rave about the event, saying how rewarding and helpful it is. Alex Edmison ’02 took the lead from this great event

and last spring launched our first ever Alumni Speed Mentoring event to connect experienced alumni with new university graduates and alumni early on in their professional careers.

Arts and Culture: Bernard Bieberstein ’97, one of our longest serving RSGCAA Executive members and our first Arts and Culture Chair, started a new tradition of creating artistically and culturally inspired events with the Georgian Night at the Opera. It was a tremendous event that brought in alumni from as far away as Ottawa.

Sports: For our many athletically inspired alumni, one of our most popular events each year is the RSGCAA Alumni Ball Hockey Tournament. We’ve started to build on that success by creating new sporting events including our first ever RSGC Alumni Squash Calcutta.

Message from the President of the Alumni Association

“There are no girls so it was kind of cool to get high marks. Everyone just wanted to do well. I loved the closeness, the bonding that a school of that size allows. And the teachers were so different. Not only were they great teachers but they genuinely cared about each student. They were great mentors and had a genuine interest in helping us.”

One of those teachers is Adrian Thornbury, Phys Ed, who remembers him fondly.

“Alex was renowned for his squash and he played an instrumental role in developing the squash program here at RSGC,” said Thornbury. “Not only was he a marquee player on the team but he also helped the coaches give the program direction. He was a great help with all of the players.”

Alex’s hard work and dedication on the squash court has paid off. A player since the age of seven, he turned pro in 2010 and has picked up three titles as part of the International Squash Doubles Association (ISDA). He plays about 17 tournaments a year.

Athletics has never been one of Alex’s weaknesses. It was on the academic side that he needed some help. And it was RSGC that put him on the right track.

“I was a terrible student. I was actually the class clown,” he said. “But at RSGC, I was driven to focus and care a little bit more. It really helped me for university and for life.”

Alex went on from RSGC to Western, where he did a double major in French and kinesiology and a minor in economics and business. He is now a Financial Advisor, Branch Manager and Branch Owner at Assante Capital Management Ltd.

So how does he balance two professional careers?

“My time management and organizational skills have been shaped really well so I’m able to work more efficiently,” he explained. “Besides, squash provides me with more energy and motivation when I’m in the office.”

Thornbury isn’t surprised to hear about Alex’s success both on and off the court.

“At a young age, he showed great leadership qualities and a great rapport for dealing with people,” he said. “He was playing at an international level in high school so he was already balancing work and play. It’s no surprise what he’s doing now.”

Yet despite his busy lifestyle, Alex still manages to find time to give back to the College. In addition to donating, along with wife Haelie who teaches in the Learning Centre at RSGC, he participates in alumni events. Last year, he returned to the school to play every single member of the badminton team.

So what’s his biggest takeaway, even nine years after graduating?

“RSGC had a huge impact on who I am today,” said Alex. “I gained a lot of confidence and a lot of great life experiences. I learned to be comfortable dealing with authority, which continues to help me today. The bonds that I formed with my classmates and teachers are unbreakable and it’s still a really tight-knit community. I really, really loved it there.”

All work and all play makes Alex Carter an old boy

A teacher’s strike that did away with extracurricular activities at Alex Carter’s high school changed his life forever.

“I was an athlete and couldn’t bear going to school without the extracurricular,” said Carter ‘02. “I had some friends who went to Royal St. George’s College so I begged my father to send me there.”

And while he was rather skeptical about going to an independent school after so many years of public school – and was made fun of by his friends – Alex started RSGC in Grade 10 and had no problems fitting in.

“What I really enjoyed was the competitiveness on the academic side,” he said.

By day, Alex works as a Financial Advisor at Assante Capital Management.

The Royal St. George’s College cash position stands at $2.1 million, a decrease of $1.1 million from last year. Operations

and donations generated $1.1 million. A total of $2.5 million has been invested in property, plant and equipment, about 50% on the mini dig project and the balance on program, renewal and regulatory capital spending.

The school remains on sound financial footing and is well positioned for the future, though pre-funding of Campaign expenses have eroded the 10% tuition fee reserve by $200,000.

The College is flourishing financially as a result of sound financial planning that bases fixed costs on fixed attainable enrolment, with variable and non-recurring expenditures only incurred when enrolment exceeds 405. We feel that this is the best way to protect the financial strength of the school in light of the variable nature of enrolment levels.

The continuing renovation, repair and replacement program resulted in an investment of $1.2 million in current plant refurbishment and $100,000 on new technology. A further $472,000 was invested in the summer of 2011 after the end of this fiscal year. $1.2 million was spent on the mini dig project in advance of funding from donations and bank financing. Throughout 2011/2012 we anticipate spending a further $8.8 million to complete this project. Equity in the property plant and equipment fund is $13.3 million.

RSGC continues to receive generous donations, accepting $726,000 in the ’10-‘11 fiscal year. $189,000 was raised through our Annual Giving campaign, an additional $138,000 was donated for specific purposes, capital gifts were $173,000 and $225,000 came in via building fund gifts.

It has been an honour for me to serve as your Treasurer and Chair of Finance for the past four years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who have made them a pleasure: the

senior administration team for its outstanding leadership and excellent stewardship of the school’s financial resources; my fellow Governors for their wisdom, encouragement and patience; our very excellent finance team of Sandra Skinner and Elden Fulton; our staff and faculty for graciously accepting continued constraints on funds available; our admissions team for its success in keeping our enrolment robust through challenging years; and a very special thank you to Andy Whiteley for his dedication to the multi-faceted role he plays at the school. He is certainly one of the College’s most precious assets. Having had the opportunity to work with dedicated professionals with such a strong commitment to the College will always be special to me.

I am most grateful for having the opportunity to be a part of this transformative period at RSGC. As we prepare to celebrate our 50th anniversary, the College is in the strongest position it has ever been. The campus will be transformed with facilities that will be the envy of any urban school. Our newly refurbished Chapel can once again be the jewel of our campus and neighbourhood. I am very confident that under the leadership of Stephen Beatty, the future of RSGC cannot be brighter. The College’s finances will thrive under the very able leadership of our new Treasurer and Chair of Finance, Cathy Bateman. As my time at RSGC comes to an end after 10 years, I hope I have made a positive contribution. I am comforted to know that my son Kjell Pladsen and I will remain Georgians forever.

Paul, who was a Chorister, Acolyte and a Prefect during his time at RSGC, feels very strongly that a lot of his values were instilled in him at the College.

“St. George’s gives much more than an education,” he said. “That’s why I feel compelled to give back to the school, especially as now it’s doing the same for my son.

“I would have given to the school regardless. As soon as I was in the position to give financially, I started giving,” explained Paul. “It was always my intention, but it crystallized when Matthew began at RSGC. He has really benefited from being there, which in turn has only increased my desire to give. It also adds to my drive to be involved in the school, whether on the Board or elsewhere.”

Paul will be named Chair of the Board in 2014, the same year RSGC celebrates its 50th anniversary and Matthew graduates.

Paul sees great importance in the future of the school, which is why he gives to both the annual fund and the Honouring Our Past | Building Our Future Campaign.

“For five years, I’ve been giving to the annual fund and when the Campaign started, I was among the first to confirm a commitment,” he said. “I give to both because they’re different. The annual fund is really about supporting the school’s annual operations and the Capital Campaign is about building the future of the school – it’s about what St. George’s will be and it’s critically important.”

As a result of their contribution to the Honouring Our Past | Building Our Future Campaign, Paul and Susan have garnered the right to name the choir stalls and dais in RSGC’s Chapel. Having been married in the Chapel, these particular recognition opportunities are of great significance to them as a couple. That significance is further emphasized by the roles both Paul and his son have fulfilled while at the College – Matthew has been in the Choir for five years.

The Clark family’s name, then, will live on in the Chapel, as well as in other ways.

“There are so many ways for our alumni to support the College,” explained David Lee, Director of Advancement and Alumni Development. “They can give their time and talents by serving on a committee, they can donate, they can send their sons here and continue their legacy. What makes Paul Clark an extraordinary Georgian is that he’s doing all of these things.”

There are a few things in life that motivate you to truly make a difference. For Paul Clark ’85, one of

those things is Royal St. George’s College. “Throughout my formative years, the two

biggest influences in my life were my parents and St. George’s, as it was then known. As a result, my achievements in life can be strongly attributed to both of them,” said Paul. “Whether it’s success with my family or in my career, I would be a very different person if not for St. George’s. The College has been instrumental in making me who I am today.”

And just who is Paul today? A former Top 40 Under 40 award recipient, Paul is the Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of TD Securities and Vice Chair of RSGC’s Board of Governors. He is also husband to Susan and father to RSGC grade 10 student Matthew.
