Pendahuluan
Orang-orang Sentani tinggal di pulau-pulau dan pantai danau Sentani, dekat Jayapura, ibu kota propinsi Irian Jaya, Indonesia. Jumlah mereka melebihi 16.000 orang.
(b) ~ diucapkan seperti 'a~in'; ngk diucapkan seperti dalam kata '~uk'.
(c) Tekanan terdapat pada silabe kedua dari akhir, kecuali bila silabe akhir berakhir dengan konsonan atau hambatan glotal. Misalnya: unulu 'roh' dan ijem 'lurus'.

Introduction
The Sentani are a people whose traditional home is located on the islands and shores of Lake Sentani, near Jayapura, the provincial capital of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. They number more than 16,000. The Sentani language is Non-Austronesian, comprising three dialects designated by their positions along Lake Sentani as Eastern, Central, and Western Sentani. These conversations are based on the speech of the inhabitants of Ifar Besar, one of the villages of the Central dialect.
It is hoped that these elementary conversations in the Sentani language will serve to encourage visitors to understand and appreciate the linguistic and social richness of the Sentani people.
Pronunciation
While the following brief description of Sentani sounds and symbols is intended to orient the general student to major features of pronunciation, it must be emphasized that these and other details of authentic Sentani speech production will only be accomplished with the assistance of a Sentani speaker and some practice. Linguists seeking a more technical treatment of Sentani phonology are referred to M. Hartzler (1976).
The alphabet is tentative and has been adapted to the Indonesian writing system with which the Sentani are familiar.
(1) Consonants
Voiceless stop k, when occurring at the beginning of words, is accompanied by slight aspiration (a small amount of air accompanies its release). In the middle of the word~ k becomes more like ~, except that air is again expressed simultaneously with the sound (actually a fricative g).
Voiced stop b in the Sentani language is actually heard as a sound midway between ~ and ~. Generally, however, this sound most resembles ~ at the beginning of words, and ~ in the middle of words.
r is flapped, as in Indonesian, and alternates with an unaspirated t at the beginning of words.
, (glottal stop) represents a tightening of the air passage at the glottis.
Other consonants are roughly the same as in English or Indonesian.
viii
(2) Vowels
Sentani has seven vowels, with several variations depending on the context in which it is articulated.
i is pronounced as in English 's~d', except before nasals. Then it sounds the same as the i in 'r1,ng'.
e is pronounced as in 'fed', except when it is the last sound in a word, or immediately prior to i, in which case it is pronounced like the vowel a in 'lame'. A distinct phoneme [e~~] is-also regularly written by Sentani speakers with the ~ symbol without ambiguity. Readers are referred to a Sentani speaker for pronunciation clarification of this sound.
a is the same as in 'f~ther', and ae is as in 'cat'.
u is like 'you', and 0 is similar to the British English pronunciation of 'cot'.
The reader should pay special attention also to the following pronunciation rules:
(a) When u occurs between another vowel and a consonant, it is automatically carried over in the form of a ~ af"ser the consonant, e.g. ikeunge 'give' is pronounced as though spelled ikeungwe, but ~ in puna 'in the water' remains the same, since it is not preceded by another vowel.
(b) Qg is pronounced as in 'siQger'; ngk is pronounced as in 'fiQger'.
(c) Wo,'d stress (accent) occurs on the next to last syllable except when the last syllable ends in a consonant or glottal stop, e.g. unulu 'spirit', and ijem 'straight'.
Brief Grammar

Nouns always occur before the following sets of descriptive words:
(a) adjectives, e.g. ro kabam man big

(b) Interrogative, e.g. ndele kakai? whose boat?
(2) Pronouns

Sentani uses different pronouns for all persons, except the third person plural 'they', which is the same as the third person singular 'he, she', for all positions in the sentence.
I reyae
you (singular) weyae he, she neyae
In all positions they can be
I, my you, your he, his she, her
Wa makeise? you go where?

we (inclusive) eyae we (exclusive) meyae
([ meyae] ) you (plural) meyae they neyae

we, our rna, maei
they na, naei
The verb is the most complex part of the Sentani language. It occurs in the clause in the following order:
SUBJECT + OBJECT + VERB
x
The verb root can be followed by numerous suffixes, e.g.
Raijae ~m~e~ ____ -~r~e~~ __ ~~~ __ -~l~e~. around noon come - first person - agreement particle
(root) Singular future tense
'I will come around noon.'
The verb can also be prefixed, for example, with a negative:
Reyae I
namam not yet
nda this
rambung thing
o moko - i boi. negative - do - negative - occurrence aspect
(root)
'I have not yet done this thing.'
The verb may be preceded by any adverb, e.g.
