Project overview

Premise for the quarry project

Quarries – potentially a great opportunity to expand turtle dove conservation beyond farmland • Thick scrub • Water features • Land to enhance with forage mix • CEMEX – keen to help.

CEMEX Turtle Dove Flyway

• Objectives

– Select and enhance 15 CEMEX sites across EU by end 2016

– Monitor intervention effectiveness

– Scale up project

• Outcomes

– Effective intervention understood

– Direct conservation benefits

Providing Food

CEMEX UK – Turtle Dove Project Sites • Site selection criteria

– Close proximity to known breeding sites. Within 5km.

– Not effecting current RSPB trial sites.

– With suitable habitats. Scrub and Water

– Not effecting quarry operations.

• Enhancement sites • Control sites

Westwood Quarry, Hertfordshire 4 ha TD mix – c. 2018

Progress and Next steps • The 10 CEMEX UK sites surveyed by volunteers, in 2014 and 2015.

• In UK - 1 in 2014, 2 (+3 juveniles) 2015 • Four enhancement sites sown. • Added to planning application – benefit of gaining permission. • International Flyway – 2 sites in France with LPO, 1 site in Spain with SEO
