of talent in the backeld to allow theTigers to move the ball. Smith startedfour games at quarterback last year, andhas a good chance to start this year. Treesprinters on the Republic track team Jace

DuVall, Tryston Ellison, andJerney Jones will share timeat tailback. Zach Jester, ZachDickens, Blake Fanning, and

Jack Hayes could all get snaps atfullback.

All those kids play linebackerfor us, so theyll be in the mix

at linebacker, Beachler says.Well probably have to usethree, if not four of those youngmen at fullback at some point,

just to rotate some kids in andout.

Speaking of the linebackercorps, Beachler says that couldbe a strong point of the defense.

Te thing...is going to bediscipline. At times last year, we

didnt t very well against therun and we created some alleysfor our opponents, and I think

we are better at that this year.

Up front, the defense will include BradleyWright a lot stronger than he was lastyear, because of his work in the weight

room, according to Beachler. Adam Butch-er also should see playing time, along withreturning lettermen Garrett Gordon and

    Jared Jensen at defensive end.

For the entire defense, Beachler says thebiggest improvement may come fromplayers understanding their roles moreclearly this season.

People will watch a game when we misstackles and say were not a very good tack-ling team. It rarely comes down to the factthat were not good tacklers. It s that when

youre not in position to make a tackle, youlook like a poor tackler, he says.

Special teams has been another point ofemphasis this summer, after the Tigerssuffered costly breakdowns in three gameslast year. Beachler says he wants the speciateams players to function as a more cohe-

sive unit this year, understanding tech-nique and having 11 guys who understand

what were trying to accomplish better.

Te Tigers travel to Lebanon for theirpreseason jamboree on August 15.Teyopen the season at home against SedaliaSmith-Cotton on August 22.

Levi Cook and Skyler Hale are the only

two returning starters on the Tigers

    offensive line.

We have someleadership. Ouryoung girls are gettingolder and stronger.Weve got a little morepower...were still veryfast.

    Coach Lee Dishman

Senior Taylor Gold (2B) andjunior Lauren Strobel (3B)round out the probable ineld.

Te speed in the outeld andthe strength of the inelddefense should also make Rooka better pitcher in her secondseason, Dishman says.

She understands that herdefense is going to play for her,and I think that were goingto be very, very strong. Ourouteld is extremely quick; theycan go get balls.Teyve gotgood arms.

With Eby and Strobel at theineld corners, teams that tryand play a small game and bunton us, were going to be in there

handling the bunt real well,he says. It takes the pressureoffRachel a little bit not having

to eld balls because those two can get inthere and get them.

Strobel will bat cleanup, alongside Holt inthe heart of the Republic batting order.

As a sophomore, Strobel sprayed the eldwith line-drive doubles and triples.Tisyear could be even better.

Shes gotten stronger and she continuesto hit the ball.Te ball jumps offher bata little bit more this year than it did inprevious years, Dishman says. Instead ofbeing a gap hitter, she might start hitting

some balls out a little bit more this year.

Increased power up and down the lineupcould lead to more big innings, but dontexpect Dishman to give up the runninggame he loves so much.

We didnt lose our quickness. We con-tinue to work on that and were just goingto continue to put pressure on teams andmake them get us out, he says. Were

going to steal a lot of bases and bunt theball still, and make the other team play thegame. As fast as we are, I think we can putpressure on them and make them makemistakes.

CF Abby Norris should anchor the spee

outfield defense, flanked by Molly Zine

    and Morgan Cantrell.

For the rst time in several years, theLady Tigers golf team enters theseason without a clear #1 player. SistersPayton and Baylee Rayl have anchored thetop of the lineup for Republic the past few

seasons, but the top spot is up in the airthis year, according to coach Curt Plotner.

I think this year actually, losing three(Baylee Rayl, Bailey Cornelison, andHaley Smith) is the most weve lost sinceIve been here, Plotner says.Tat meansthe Lady Tigers will rely on a much

younger, less experienced lineup, includingplayers like sophomore Katie Hamilton.

Katie has been playing a lot this summer, and playing pretty well. Shes scoring well

enough that she has a good chance to getout of districts, and if she can shave offa few more strokes shes got a chance tomake it to state, Plotner says.

Juniors Caroline and Emma Blanford alsogure to play a key role. Plotner says heis encouraged by their improvement since

    last season as well.

Im kind of expecting big things out ofthem, he says.

Only one senior, Vanessa Nimmo, willcrack the ve-player varsity lineup. Who

will be in the fth slot is anyones guess.

    T

at 5th spot is kind of up in the air rightnow so well just have to see. A couple ofthese freshmen look like theyre going tobe okay. Weve got quite a while.

Plotner says whoever is in the lineup, it

will bethe mostbalanced in Republic since he took over ashead coach.

Tey all hit it well enough, they can get iton the green and probably have par putts,Plotner says.

    T

e short game thats where it s at. Ifthey can just work on their short gamethey can shave probably 10 strokes offtheir score; that would really help us outa lot.

Te key to a successful season will beconsistency: avoiding disastrous holes thatcan sink an entire days score.

I tried telling them, 18 ves is 90. Ifthey can just make ve on every hole -- itseems too often they have a hole where

they have seven and eight, and they kindof add up on them, Plotner says.

If his lineup can play a conservativegame that keeps everyone in the 90s orbelow, he believes the Lady Tigers can becompetitive.

    G

    Consistency Is the Key

    for Lady Tigers Golf

Coach Curt Plotner looks to replace

    the senior leadership (and scoring)

of Baylee Rayl. The Lady Tigers have

only one senior, Vanessa Nimmo, on

    this years squad.
