Abel’s Supermarket (now Hillcrest New World) was the
first supermarket in Hamilton.
The University of Waikato opened in 1964, and in 1989 (with help from NASA) established the first internet connection
in New Zealand.

$230,000 to the successful City Safe ambassadors programme from the central city to the suburbs
for a 12-month trial.
Construction of the $11.4M water reservoir to supply drinking water to
Ruakura and Peachgrove.
Renewing footpaths on Barries Cres, Dalesford St, Eton Dr, Flynn Rd,
Helena Rd, Nevada Rd, Tralee Pl.
Renewing the playground at Jansen Park.
Planning and design for the Eastern Pathways project which includes improved cycleways and public transport between the CBD and university.
Resurfacing Barrie Cr, sections of Silverdale Rd,
Southsea Cr, Beech Cr, Eton Dr.
Raised pedestrian platform at Silverdale Rd/Masters Ave.
$15.5M for work on the final section of the Ring Road, extending Wairere Dr between Cambridge Rd
and Cobham Dr.

Hammond Park, originally the site of Maaori paa, is home to one of New Zealand’s only urban long-tail bat (pekapeka) populations.
Silverdale is named after the original farm on the land, which
itself was named after the shining silver poplar leaves.

City-wide Projects 2019/20
Let’s take a look
$15M to complete the
upgrade of the Pukete wastewater
treatment plant.
$1M to help address
housing affordability.$1.1M
for new self-issue technology at our libraries.
$2M on work to prepare for
four new themed gardens and a toilet
block at Hamilton Gardens.
$200,000 to plan a
20-year vision for the
central city.
$4M to complete the Hamilton leg
of the Te Awa River Ride from Hamilton to Cambridge.
$1.5M to replace the turf at FMG Stadium Waikato, named 2018’s best venue
by the NZ Events Association.
$3.5M to start work upgrading
Hamilton’s water treatment plant in Fitzroy, increasing its capacity by more than 30% to
140M litres a day.
$20M on road improvements and a rail platform in Rotokauri
for the Hamilton to Auckland train service.
Replacing about 6km of water and wastewater pipes
throughout the city.
Renewal of the splash pad at
Waterworld, adding new features and
creating a dedicated children’s area.
Resealing of 154,000m2 of roads.
Work to control erosion in Hamilton’s gullies and
streams is underway.
We’ll finalise the design of the new bridge over the Waikato River linking Peacocke and Hillcrest.
