Ruawai Collegersquos Community Newsletter
Wersquove been talking a lot about resilience over the last few weeks in school Students and staff have been discussing what it actually means as we try to add it to our Positive Behaviour for Learning programme Some of the discussions around it have almost over-complicated the word but the heart of it is about the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties Over the last week the resilience of two people in particular has reduced me to tears in different ways
As last weekrsquos newsletter was hitting your inboxes I was in Auckland to see one of my all-time favourite singers - Andrea Bocelli For those of you who donrsquot know him he is described as the worldrsquos most beloved tenor and 10000 of us at the Vector Arena certainly agreed as he sang his way through a range of beautiful songs Andrea Bocelli has been blind since the age of 12 however when he was hit on the head by a football during a soccer match and suffered a brain haemorrhage In spite of his blindness he went on to study law at an Italian University and later began studying opera before turning professional in his mid 30s The power of Bocellirsquos voice is awe-inspiring and Irsquom sure there was not a dry eye in the arena at times such was the admiration of both this manrsquos talent and his absolute determination and resilience in overcoming one of the most major obstacles any human being could experience
I shared with students in assembly this week the video of Nick Vujicic Academically successful and Captain of his school he then went on to gain a double degree at University by the age of 21 Following this he began his career as a motivational speaker mainly in schools and focussing on teenage issues around self-belief hope and finding meaning in life His audiences listen to him with rapt attention and on an emotional roller-coaster between laughter and tears What makes him so special Vujicic was born without any limbs That has never stopped him from doing what he wanted He says ldquothere are some things in life that are out of our control that we canrsquot change and wersquove got to live with The choice that we have though is either to give up or keep on goingrdquo
Teaching our youngsters that not everything they want in life is going to come to fruition first time around is really important sometimes things will work out just exactly as planned at other times it doesnrsquot seem to matter howmuch effort we put in things just wonrsquot fall into place The difference betweensomeone who is successful in life and someone who isnrsquot is toughness the ability to get up dust yourself off and try again As parents and as teachers we can only cushion those blows occasionally otherwise wersquore leading those in our care to think they canrsquot take the hard knocks in life Itrsquos okto fail it really is It makes us stronger humbler smarter and more determined It makes us resilient And thatrsquos no bad thing
