Sherborne School Rugby Tour to Australia 2015

I am delighted to be sending you my best wishes for your forthcoming tour toAustralia. Going on rugby tour is an exciting experience, not to be missed! England always enjoy travelling to the Southern Hemisphere; the opportunity to experience the culture of another continent, especially one so passionate about its rugby, will be very special.

I believe that Sherborne has had a very successful rugby season, from the U15s winning the NatWest Vase, to the 7s team winning at the Colston’s Sevens. So I hope all of your preparations and training continue to go well. Make sure you have really worked on your conditioning as that will be of huge importance.

Remember your school’s values and those of rugby too. Wear your shirts with pride and play with passion, play as a team and for those teammates that you have been brought up playing alongside over the past few years.

A special bond is created by those on tour - the experiences you’ll share with your team mates will never be forgotten. Enjoy it, believe in yourselves and give it your best! I’m sure you will do your school, yourselves and your families proud.

Best wishes

Stuart Lancaster England Head Coach

Dear Senior Rugby Squad

Sherborne has had an exceptionally successful rugby season this year and it is typical of the Shirburnian spirit and the dedication of David Muckalt and his colleagues that you are now travelling to the other side of the world to find further challenges.

There is no doubt that this tour will be physically and competitively demanding; Australia’s proud sporting tradition suggests that the opposition will be daunting. There will be opportunities also to be tested in other ways. You will have a chance to learn from new landscapes – both physical and cultural – and to demonstrate the generosity of spirit and sensitivity for which Sherborne is famed. I am sure that you will return having gained as much from your time off the pitch as you have on it.

In the last couple of years we have had the pleasure of hosting sides from King’s, Parramatta and St Ignatius’, Riverview, who were a credit to their schools both on and off the field. They are hosting us in return on this tour and I am grateful to them in advance for their hospitality. Similarly to Churchies in Brisbane, who I know have given a warm welcome to us in the past when they have visited Australia.

Having always been strong, rugby at Sherborne is now increasingly ambitious. Events such as this are an integral part of our work to keep progressing and to keep improving; you are central to that effort.

You are also ambassadors for both School and Country. Take up the challenge to represent us, and yourselves, at our best. Undoubtedly this experience will bond you even closer as a group and I hope you will also form new ties and lasting friendships with your host families and others in Australia.

With warmest wishes for a successful tour and my thanks to the accompanying staff who include David Guy, David Muckalt, Rhidian McGuire, Tom Mason and Tom Scott. May you have a truly wonderful experience.

From the Head of RugbyDavid Muckalt

Touring is an integral part of the rugby experience at Sherborne School. The School first toured in 1978 and has run regular trips to the Southern hemisphere and Europe. The School last toured Australia in 2011 and since returning we have enjoyed hosting touring parties from The King’s School, Parramatta and St Ignatius’ College, Riverview.

Having visited Australia on three previous tours, I am fully aware of the unique experience that awaits the Sherborne touring party. There is a shared belief between schools in the UK and in Australia that the touring experience will enhance the unity within the team and generate life long memories and friendships. This is enhanced through the hosting and billeting of players which allows young men to experience new cultures first hand. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the families who will be offering this experience to the Sherborne group this summer.

The tour provides a competitive and challenging environment which will test all 47 players and five coaches. The aim of this tour is to help players develop their skills in a different environment and face tough physical and mental challenges that the strong fixture list will provide. Our tour will see us take on two of Brisbane’s top schools, The Southport School and Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie), and two of Sydney’s top Schools, The King’s School and St Ignatius’, Riverview, before heading to Cairns for our last fixtures against Trinity Anglican School and St Augustine’s College. The players and staff will balance training and playing with ensuring that time is left to experience what Australia has to offer.

We are very much looking forward to the challenges that Australia has in store for us and I am confident that we will return from the tour having had the opportunity to develop and bond as a squad in preparation for our 2015-16 season. The experience will undoubtedly serve as a source of life long memories and hopefully, friendships. I encourage all the Sherborne touring party to embrace the challenges that await us and to do so in the same respectful manner that acts as one of pillars that the game is built upon.

He is currently the 1st XV backs coach and in previous years has coached England Schools U16 Saxons, England North and England South West. David is married with two children and one daft cocker spaniel. He enjoys beach holidays in the summer and skiing with the family in the winter, and is returning to Australia for the 5th time; his last visit was with Sherborne School in 2011.

TOM MASON

Tom Mason is Head of Geography at Sherborne and has been at the school for 3 years. He has coached the U16 age group at the school alongside running teams in hockey and cricket. Tom also has the onerous task of leading the ski racing trip to Switzerland each year.

TOM SCOTT

Tom Scott teaches modern languages and has been at Sherborne for five years, although he is also an Old Shirburnian. He has coached both U16 and U14 sides within the school and is also Head of Athletics, although he is most likely to be found training for his latest hobby/obsession: triathlon.

ALEX MCCALL

Alex currently runs his own business but is also the Head Physiotherapist for the England rugby U16’s group. Alex is happily married and has recently become a father for the second time, so what better way to celebrate than to leave home for 3 weeks! Alex will be on his first tour with Sherborne School but he is an experienced tourist as he has recently demonstrated by delaying his flight out by a day and upgrading his own flight to Business Class!

DAVID MUCKALT

David Muckalt is in his 3rd year at Sherborne and is the Head of Rugby and Deputy Director of Sport. He joined Sherborne following 5 years at Giggleswick School and 7 years at The Manchester Grammar School. In both his previous schools he enjoyed tours to Australia. He has himself played at international level, representing the England Counties XV and played as a semi-professional for 10 seasons in the English Championship. He will be acting as the Tour Manager for his 5th visit to Australia and is looking forward to renewing friend-ships with staff at Churchie, The King’s School and Riverview, all schools that he has visited in previous trips, as well as more recently looking after the 2013 King’s UK touring party and the 2014 Riverview UK Touring party. David is a very quiet and unassuming member of the tour party so you may need to look hard to find him!

RHIDIAN MCGUIRE

Rhidian is Head of Physical Education at Sherborne and has been there for 2 years following a spell as Head of Rugby at Bath based Prior Park College. He coached this season’s successful under fifteen A team who won the Nat West Vase final at Twickenham in March and is also involved with Bath academy as an U16 coach. Sherborne Rugby 2014-15 Season Overview

The 2014 season saw Sherborne School play over 200 fixtures with teams at all age groups enjoying a weekly programme which balanced technical and tactical coaching with the challenge of a tough fixture a week throughout the Michaelmas Term. The rugby programme at Sherborne is purely optional and with 20 teams playing regularly it speaks volumes about the quality and provision that we offer and the experience that the boys have on a weekly basis.

This season, the 1st XV had one of their most successful seasons for well over a decade winning 13 of their 16 fixtures, with the high-lights being victories against Radley College (Centenary Cup Match, 26-7), Marlborough College (22-0), St Pauls (Mike Davis Cup, 28-18) and Clifton College (33-12). The brand of rugby on display from the XV this season was built around a strong set-piece and a very exciting back line, many of who will be in Australia this summer as they look forward to another season. The School boasted 7 Bath Academy players and Jack Edmondson represented England u18’s in the annual FIRA competition. Alongside the 1st XV, the 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths and 6ths (occasional) all had successful seasons with many players experiencing their first season of open age grade rugby.

Our Colts year group had a very productive season reversing many of their previous year’s defeats showing that size is not the essential ingredient in achieving success! This year group have had to endure a few difficult periods during their time at the School, however, a fantastic team spirit has certainly helped them bond and with many of the A and B XV players travelling to Australia, I am sure that this characteristic will benefit them moving forward into open age grade rugby.

Our Junior Colts year group were able to enjoy a trip to Twickenham with our u15A XV winning the National Vase Competition against Oakham School and one Tyrece Johnston-Fisher (over 2 million hits on you-tube). Whilst we are certainly not a School that celebrates the winning of trophies as a measure of our success, this victory showed a great deal about this year group of players. Our entry into the Vase competition came as a result of a surprising defeat in round 3 of the Cup with many boys falling into the trap that because they had beaten the opposition before, all that would be needed for us to progress was for us to turn up, how wrong! The learning experience was clear for all to see; The resilience that the squad then showed to commit fully to a competition that we would not expect to see ourselves in, and then to win the last 5 rounds on the way to the final all away from home, showed that this group of future 1st XV players have a strong team ethos and work ethic, traits which will undoubtedly serve them well.

Sherborne Rugby 2014-15 Season Overview

Our Mini-Colts have had a tough introduction to rugby at Sherborne School with almost every team being twice the size. However, the boys have started to recognise the benefits of playing the Sherborne way and whilst they have struggled to contain sides defensively, they have scored some outstanding tries throughout the season and moving forward, this belief in the style of rugby being more important than size, will be rewarded (although I do hope that they grow a little bit over the summer!)

The 1st VII have been afforded the opportunity to focus purely on 7’s during the Lent Term, which has certainly helped us to close the gap on the regular big hitters on the Schools 7’s circuit. With six tournaments in place the 1st VII played at Millfield, Brecon (1/4 finalists), Colstons (Winners), Oakham, Bryanston (Plate Winners) and Rosslyn Park in the Open School Competition (Semi-Finalist). The 1st VII were captained by Fergus Hamilton and their efforts throughout the short season have been very commendable and with 11 of the 17 players in the squad set to return next year, the future of sevens at the school looks promising!

There have certainly been many highlights this season and to pick one would be very difficult, I must congratulate the 1st XV on their superb season winning 13 of their 16 fixtures and being unbeaten since half term (8 consecutive wins), and not losing a match on the Upper. The Colts have had a fantastic season with the A XV losing a very close County Cup semi-final and the C XV unbeaten. The Junior Colts A victory at Twickenham in the Vase Final was a fantastic occasion for all involved with the School and they were support-ed by the JCD XV who had the pick of the playing records at this age group. The Mini-Colts have certainly found this season tough but I have witnessed a tremendous spirit which will serve them well as they move through the school. In the sevens the 1st VIIs performanc-es at Colstons (Winners) and Bryanston (Plate Winners) and their tremendous efforts reaching the semi-final of the Rosslyn Park Open competition have all contributed to what has been the most successful season to date in my tenure as Head of Rugby.

This season, the rugby at Sherborne School has improved with the common dominator in all age groups being the recognition and acceptance that playing as a team is a vital ingredient in success. Departing 1st XV Captain Matthew Key has been inspirational in instilling this and he will leave a legacy of how great things can be achieved with great team work, strong values and clear goals. The Australia Tour provides our 2015 Captain, Fergus Hamilton, to build on some of these strong values and he will need the support of all the tourists in Australia to ensure that he can continue to build on the strong rugby foundations that have been laid before him.
