Thank you for being a part of Mrs. Thompson’s Treasure Club. I hope this resource is fun and engaging
for your students!
Please send any feedback to [email protected].
before you begin:
These activities can be used at a pace that works for your class. You can do several a day or spread them out over a few weeks. Many of the activities have different versions so you can differentiate as needed. It is not expected that each student will complete every page. I have included some instructions and answer keys as needed throughout the pages.
rules at School & Home
Introduction Activity:Have two students sit at the front of the class and give them a deck of cards. Tell them to go ahead a play a game called “Sneezerflugel” or some other silly word. They will probably be confused and ask how you play. Tell them it doesn’t matter, just try to play. After a minute, ask them some questions like: Why didn’t you play the game? Was it fun? Explain to them that because they didn’t know the rules of the game, they weren’t able to play it or have fun. This week they will be exploring some rules at school that will help them know what to do, be able to learn and be safe, and also have fun.
Read The Rules by Marty Kelley, or any other book that talks about following school rules.
Ideas & Tips
There are 2 levels for the first emergent reader. The first one uses simple repetitive text for the earliest of readers. The second one is more challenging.
Emergent readers
guess the rule game
Play a game of charades. Have students come up one at a time and whisper to them an action to do. Some can be following the rules such as walking quietly. Others might be breaking a rule such as stomping loudly. Have the class first decide if the student is following a rule or not following a rule, then have them share what they think the rule is. Use whatever your personal set of class rules are for this game so your students will be familiar with them.
Rules at School
We have rules at school. The rules help us know what to do. At school we raise our hand before we talk. We keep our hands and feet to ourselves. We clean up our mess. We listen when the teacher is talking. We are kind to each other.

Directions: Laminate and cut out the titles and pictures (next page also). Use in a center as a sorting activity. Students will sort the pictures in the right groups.

listening/reading comprehension
The listening comprehension pages can be used for pre readers.
The following is an example of how to complete the reading comprehension pages. Have students read the story 3 times. This can be done with a partner, small group or independently depending on reading level. Students will then circle the correct answer for the questions and use the color indicated to underline (or highlight) the evidence that supports their answer in the text.
Tim has a ball. Dan wants to play with it. What can he do? Is it good to grab it? No. Is it good to cry? No. He can ask Tim. “Can I play too?” Dan asks. “Yes!” Tim says.

Venn Diagram
Make a class Venn diagram to compare rules at home and rules at school. You can make big circles on a white board or use hula hoops on the ground! I’ve given some sentences you can use, but feel free to write your own as well. You can read a sentence and have the class decide where it goes, or you can let the class come up with their own sentences that fit into each category. An example is shown below.
I have also included a student page where they can make their own Venn diagram using words or pictures.
