TAKE ON A CHALLENGE AND TACKLE POVERTYNothing feels better than the afterglow of a physical challenge, and even more so when you do it for a great cause.

Whether you’re doing it solo or with family and friends, we invite you to challenge yourself as you raise funds for Sport Relief 2020 this March. You’ll be supporting vital projects in the UK and around the world that help vulnerable people of all ages, and make a difference to real lives. Just like the ones overleaf.

Cameron, 13 Weymouth, UKFor 13-year-old Cameron, home means feeling safe, warm and comfortable. And it’s something he will never take for granted.

Three years ago – with no money and nowhere else to go – Cameron and his dad ended up living in a tiny room in an emergency hostel. The space was cold, damp and noisy, and they shared a bathroom with five other families. Cameron was scared to go to the toilet because the lock on the door was broken. Families in the UK are not supposed to live in emergency accommodation like this for more than six weeks. Cameron and his dad were in the hostel for eight long months before finally moving to a house of their own.

Cameron feels so passionately that no other children should have to go through what he did that he now campaigns for Change it! – a project funded by Sport Relief that works to prevent child homelessness.

Nelsiwe, 35 Pretoria, South AfricaNelsiwe is a mother-of-two from South Africa. Her youngest, is a cheeky, energetic toddler who loves to sing and dance. 16-month-old Celokuhle is happy and healthy, despite her mother receiving the shocking news during her pregnancy that she was HIV positive.

Thankfully, mothers2mothers, a project which receives funding from a Comic Relief and British Airways Partnership, has been able to give Nelsiwe the right support. They ensured that she was educated in the best way to keep her baby safe from the virus both before and after she was born.

With the correct nutrition and medication both mother and toddler are thriving and Celokuhle has remained HIV negative. Nelsiwe is now enjoying motherhood and is optimistic for her family’s future.

Go the distance

Ever thought about challenging yourself to get from one city to another, travel the length of the UK, or perhaps even further? Whether you like to walk, run, cycle, swim or row, set yourself a distance and smash it! Just ask your supporters to sponsor you by the mile, thousand steps or number of gentle hills you conquer.

Try something new

Branch out, by challenging yourself to try an activity you’ve never done before. Always liked the look of kayaking, or wondered what it would feel like to abseil? Try anything you fancy, as long as it leaves you invigorated and sponsors feeling like it’s money well pledged.

A class of your own

Not literally, unless you want to. But if you love exercise classes of any kind – from body pump to boot camp – try doing

them back-to-back. Or set yourself a target for how many you can do in a week, with a bonus from your sponsors for completing an agreed number.

Follow in celebrity footsteps

If you’ve been inspired by our celebrity supporters’ daring exploits – like Zoe Ball’s epic 350 mile cycle from Blackpool to Brighton, or Eddie Izzard’s incredible 27 marathons in 27 days – why not step into their shoes and take on your own super challenge?

DO GOOD WITHEVERY STROKE

Do it for them. Do it for you. Raising money for Sport Relief can leave you feeling good inside and out. How hard you go is up to you, of course. Just take this chance to get some exercise while you’re raising much-needed funds.

TOP TIPS Set yourself a target

Aim high and tell the world. Statistically, target-setters raise 45% more than those who don’t.

You can’t over-share! Tell your story on social media – people want to hear about the good you’re doing.

Team challenge

Get together for a sponsored collective team effort. Whether you want to try a record-setting relay, take on a timed challenge, or set a super long distance goal. However you achieve it – run, swim, cycle or hop – this is your chance to show everyone what your team’s made of and drum up maximum support.

Get out in the gardenIt can be as simple as a ball game, a treasure hunt or ten times round the lawn. Just get everyone out in the garden for fun as you fundraise. Charge them a fee to enter and sell baked treats, so all the money goes to Sport Relief.

Skipathon, hulathon,anything-athon

Set aside an hour or two, or make it a 24-hour challenge. Get everyone involved in the activity of your choice, and see how

long you can go, all for a good cause. Just be sure to take regular breaks, and ask your sponsors to make donations in line with how long you last.

Friendly competition

If you’ve got plenty of takers, split them into teams and set up a mini-tournament. Whatever sport you opt for – football, basketball, table tennis, anything at all – keep the matches short and sweet. Ask everyone for a donation to take part, or make sure everyone has their sponsors on board before you start.

Bring the gang together for something special. A Sport Relief event can be something to enjoy with family, friends or teammates. You can make it as gentle or testing as you like.

OUR FUNDRAISING HEROES

Why 100 metres was a marathon for GwynLeft paralysed after brain surgery, Gwyn Dafydd Hughes from Cwmbran showed the world his strength of will by walking a hundred metres for Sport Relief. Cheered on by friends and family, the 26-year-old took 302 steps to complete the distance at Newport Velodrome.

Gwyn’s father was by his side every step of the way. As he pointed out, “This is the equivalent of a marathon for an able-bodied person. The amount of effort required to walk, both mentally and physically, is immense for him.” Gwyn’s heroic resilience raised over £1,236 for Sport Relief – and like his dad, we couldn’t be prouder of him.

How Mr Fox jumped over 1,000 metres29-year-old Jason Fox from the Channel Islands set himself the task of jumping over 1,000m in just 12 hours. The venue was the Les Ormes Sports Centre in Jersey. He smashed his target, jumping a combined 1037m in 739 jumps.

A formidable achievement, even for an experienced athlete like Jason, who has represented Jersey at the event internationally. Even more impressively, he raised £1,045 for Sport Relief in the process. And never one to make life easy for himself, he even wore a fox-themed onesie to do it!
