What is Running Start?
Running Start is a Washington State program that allows high school students to earn credits toward both high school AND college at a local community college. Students must be juniors or seniors, and must meet all entrance requirements (placement test or alternative) as outlined by the college.
Running Start students are still Redmond High School students. They can choose to take a full-time or part-time course load at Running Start. Full-time Running Start students take all their classes at the community college. Part-time students arrange a schedule to attend some classes at RHS, and others at a community college. Running Start students may still participate in activities at the high school.
Running Start students enroll in community college classes and are treated like any other community college student.
Running Start students and their families do not pay tuition, but they do pay college fees and buy their own books, as well as provide their own transportation.
How Do I Enroll in Running Start? The process will vary slightly at each college, but will generally include:
1. Student fills out a Running Start application online directly with the community college.
2. Student completes math and English placement with the community college.
3. Student meets with RHS counselor to choose courses that align with grad plan and signs Enrollment Verification Form.
4. Student submits the Enrollment Verification Form to the college, attends an orientation meeting, and registers for classes.

Check Eligibility (Place into English 101)
• Placement test at LWTech (FREE) or at other colleges
• English Smarter Balanced Assessment scores of either L3 or L4
• Provide transcript showing college English grade, 2.0 or higher
Fill out Running Start Application
• Link to application forms sent to parent email once eligibility is
determined.
Registration for Class
• Make an appointment with the Running Start advisor to register
for class. Call (425) 739-8107!
• Running Start Enrollment Verification Form must be signed High
school counselor before registration

Admission Requirements• Applicants with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or
higher will automatically be admitted.
• Applicants with a 2.00-2.99 cumulative GPA will be considered for admission based on grades AND test scores.
• Applicants with a 2.00 - 2.49 cumulative GPA will also be required to submit a personal statement.
• Generally, we are looking for placement into ENG 101.
• Students with a cumulative GPA of less than 2.0 are not admitted.

• CWU uses placement testing when
considering admission for students
with a cumulative high school GPA of
less than 3.0.
• CWU requires placement testing for
enrollment into English, math, and
some science courses.

Placement• Students planning to enroll in pre-
calculus or calculus based math courses need to submit ALEKS or Accuplacer scores
• Accuplacer testing is offered at CWU Sammamish on an appointment basis.
– Cost is $25 – pay online
– Results are immediate
– Can be scheduled by calling 425-392-2110.
How is Running Start different
at CWU?
• 1-on-1 advising with a RS Advisor
• Courses are offered on a university
campus.
• Students must meet university
admission requirements to
participate.
• Students work on general education
(first two years of a bachelor’s
degree) and prerequisites for majors.
Which classes can
RS students take?
• Running Start students are treated like
other students at CWU.
• They can take whichever courses they meet
the pre-requisites for.
• Most students will be taking 100 & 200
level courses that would be open to other
college freshmen and sophomores.
• Students will have individual advising and
create a personal education plan.

3. Pre-major courses
• Credits do transfer to other institutions,
but you need to confirm with that
institution that the credits will transfer
the way you intend.
Transferring Credits
• Credits taken through Central Washington University will transfer to other schools the same way credits taken at community colleges will transfer.
• Credits transfer to all public colleges & universities in Washington State.
• Credits will transfer to most private universities and public universities out of state.
• RS Advisors will work with you individually to develop an education plan based on your long term academic goals to help ensure that your credits will transfer in the most efficient manner.

• Complete application and submit a high school transcript online.
• Communications about admission status will be sent to the email used to setup the application.
• Schedule and/or submit necessary test scores for admission and/or placement into English and math.
• Meet with your high school counselor to determine which courses you need for graduation.
• Meet with RS advisor to develop an education plan and register for classes.
New Student Advising
• Fall registration opens on May 6, 2020
– Advising is available throughout the summer, but students are encouraged to apply and start advising early.
• Winter: late October
• Spring: early February• *Students are encouraged to start in Fall Quarter.
