Upcoming events tailored for both new & experienced participantsHas your running or walking progressed to the point where you want to enter an event for the first time? Or are you ready for a bit more of a challenge? If so there are two events coming up, one tailor made for people new to the sport and the other for those who are ready to expand their horizons. The Feb. 14 Brevard Zoo Zebra Zoom 3K, which translates to 1.8 miles, takes place over as interest-ing, informative and educational course that exists anywhere in the county. And it provides the perfect opportunity for newcomers to give the sport a bit of a go. And then there is the 5-mile relay for the March 1 Excalibur 10-miler that begins and ends at Viera High School and could be the perfect vehicle for runners and walkers ready to experiment beyond the 5K (3.1-mile distance). For the thoroughbreds the Zoom doubles as race five of the always hotly contested seven-race 2014-2015 Running Zone Foundation Race Series. But don’t be intimidated by the racers. In fact learn from them. Watch how they prepare, watch how they race, watch how they wind down. Ask questions. Someday that could be you. Nobody who is new to the sport shows up and wins in their first-ever event. Everyone starts a bit
slowly, a bit tentatively, growing more eager and experienced with each event. Every journey begins with a first step be it a run-ning step or a walking step. As for the relay, while 10 miles is a long race, five miles can certainly be manageable for runners or walkers with 5K experience. Plus it provides the opportunity for competition with the other relay teams while the greyhounds are racing up front.Have we piqued your interest? If so we’ll look for you at the start and the finish and we’re sure you’ll be recognizable by your big smile of accomplishment. For complete details on both events see the race forms in this newsletter, visit us online at www.runningzone.com or call us at 321-751-8890.

3 RUNNING ZONE THE STARTING LINE
Running Zone Recognized for 2 Prestigious AwardsBy Mark DeCotis
Over the last two months of 2014 Run-ning Zone was extremely privileged and honored to be considered for two prestigious awards.
In November it was among three finalists for the FLORIDA TODAY Business of the Year and in December it was an-nounced Running Zone was named one of the 50 Best Run-
ning Stores in America by Competitor and Running Insight. This year marked the sixth time it received that designation. While the recognition was bestowed on Running Zone it would not have been possible without the hard work, loyalty and dedication of the employees and without the customers, said co-owners Don and Denise Piercy. “We have been in business for 11 years. We began humbly in a small storefront that we quickly outgrew,” Don and Denise said. “We moved to larger quarters and moved again thanks to the support of our customers. “Words cannot convey or express how we appreciate each and everyone who visits
us whether they are long-time supporters or walking through the door for the first time. “Our thanks and appreciation also goes out to the thousands who participate each year in our Running Zone Foundation Race Series events, our fun runs and walks and the Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon which just continues to grow drawing in-creased participation from Brevard County, Florida, across the country and the world.” It’s been said and written that one part of success can be easily defined as being happy in one’s chosen line of work. Don and Denise
trust that the smiles that greet customers ev-ery day at the store or at the starting line will convey how happy they are to continue to be at your service. Happy New Year from Don, Denise and everyone at Running Zone.
Words cannot convey or ex-press how we appreciate each and everyone who visits us whether they are long-time sup-porters or walking through the door for the first time. – DENISE PIERCY
Over 1200 participants at the Ghostly Gecko 5K in October were able to see the “Zombie Doctors” on the course directing runners and walkers. These costumes were created by the Eau Gallie High School Health & Wellness Academy! This past month we were able to present this program with $4000.00 for being the beneficiary of the event.

Ghosts of Christmas past proved to be ghosts of Christmas present as Andrew Cac-ciatore and Kaitlin Donner won the Jingle Bells 2-Miler for the second straight year on Dec. 20. Running through the festively lighted streets of Satellite Beach, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy senior Cacciatore, 18, of Indialantic scored the overall victory by nine seconds over former Holy Trinity runner Alex Hoffman, 21, of Malabar. Cacciatore crossed in nine minutes, 42.1 seconds while Hoffman finished in 9:51.6. Former Holy Trinity runner Kyle Butler, 26, of Melbourne, was third in 9:56.2 while Holy Trinity alumnus and 2012 winner Alex Brown, 20, of Melbourne, was fourth in 10:05.9. Donner, 25, of Melbourne, was the first woman finisher and 11th overall in 10:33.8, edging her husband, Ed Donner, 38, of Mel-bourne, who was 12th overall in 10:39.3. Angela Cobb, 31, of Melbourne Beach, the 2012 women’s winner, was second to Donner and 19th overall in 11:22.7. Palm Bay’s Kim Hunger, was 26th overall and third among women in 11:48.7. For Donner, traversing the by ways of her childhood and teen-age years, the race proved to be yet another enjoyable, albeit brief, evening. “I love doing the Jingle Bell since it's so close to where I grew up and along the streets I ran all through high school,” Donner said. “I cooled down with Luke Redito and passed my parents’ old house.
“It's a tie between the Ghostly Gecko where I always dress up and this race as to which is my favorite of the Running Zone Series.” Jingle Bells also served as a measure-ment for Donner’s fitness as she prepares for the 2015 professional triathlon season and draws ever closer to the U.S. Olympic Trials, which will determine team members for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. “My triathlon season will start in mid March so right now I am in a base phase with a lot of aerobic and technique oriented work in all three disciplines,” Donner said. “This race is timed perfectly as a pre-season test as to where my speed is with no speed work, so it's hard to be disappointed with it. A break is always nice and much needed after a long season, it makes me crave training and racing hard again.” For Cacciatore the race also served as a bridge of sorts. “The Jingle Bells race is a fun race to do after cross country because I am able to run with former teammates and alumni runners from Coach Butler's early teams,” he said. “It's also a gauge for me to see what kind of shape I am in and gives me an idea of what I need to work on for the upcoming track season. “I didn't really have a set plan for the race. I wanted to go out with the lead pack and see what I had left the last mile.“We had a pretty large pack for about the first half mile, then Alex Hoffman and Kyle Butler surged ahead and I went with them. After that
it was just a pack of three Holy Trinity run-ners, with Alex Brown not far behind.”The Male Masters victory went to Shane Streufert, 42, of Viera who was sixth overall in 10:16.8. Ceal Muldoon Walker, 52, of Cocoa Beach, was the Female Masters winner in 12:33.9. The team victory went to Set Goals Not Limits comprised of Butler, former Holy Trin-ity runner Kyle Cooke, current Holy Trinity runners John Cacciatore and Samantha Folio and former Holy Trinity head coach Doug Butler. They had a combined time of 54:24. Team Running Zone of Andrew Cac-ciatore, Kaitlin Donner, Hunger, Scott Larson and Melissa Taylor was second at 55;48. Long Doggers Club of Streufert, Michael Fisher, Cobb, Aubree Peipmeier, and Wade Dauber-man was third in 56:27. The Holland Hornets won the school competition with 18 participants. The Divine Mercy Chargers were second with 11 and Indian Harbour Montesorri third with 10. A total of 1,652 runners and walkers took times in what was the fourth race in the seven-event Running Zone Foundation Race Series. Next up is the Feb. 14 Brevard Zoo Zebra Zoom 3K. For complete information visit www.runningzone.com/series or call Running Zone at 321-751-8890.

The conditions were perfect for the Decem-ber 17th Gecko Club Fun Run! Roughly 60 people of all ages met at the Greater Palm Bay Senior Center for a 2 or 4 mile fun run through the Lockmar Estates neighborhood. Everyone enjoyed the arches over the road,
the musical-light displays and the festive at-mosphere in this neighborhood. Participants were asked to bring non-perishable goods for the Senior Center, and then Long Dogger’s in Palm Bay did not disappoint with their deli-cious post-run food.

7 RUNNING ZONE THE STARTING LINE
Dogs may be man’s best friends, but they are often runners’ worst enemies. Every runner has a story of a dog attack or near attack, and all are terrifying. Dog bites in the USA have become a major problem, doubling in frequency in the last decade. Every day, 1,000 people are treated in emergency facilities for dog bites. In the past decade, 283 people died from their wounds. Pit bulls accounted for 62 percent of fatalities, fol-lowed by Rottweilers (12 percent), bulldogs (7 percent), and German shepherds (4 percent). Even non-lethal injuries are often severe, especially in children, who often suffer head and facial injuries. Lacerations; crush injuries; fractures; infections of skin, subcutaneous tis-sue, and bone; and psychological trauma are the most common injuries from dog attacks. The average medical liability claim for a dog bite is $29,000. Why do dogs attack people, especially runners? We really don’t know. The vast majority of dogs never attack anyone. But any dog, regardless of breed, can potentially attack someone. Because dogs are territorial animals, some attacks occur because the dog is trying to protect its territory. Other, “playful dogs”, might see the runner as inviting a game of chase. Still others are stimulated by sudden fast movement, as when a runner passes by. Finally, there are true “predatory dogs”, often feral, that occasionally travel in packs. These are espe-cially dangerous and have been responsible for several recent attacks in Southern California. Prevention is the best defense against dog attacks. Avoid running in areas where dogs are likely to run loose or where reported attacks have occurred. If you have seen loose dogs in areas on previous routes, change your route. Assume that all unknown dogs are a threat until proven otherwise. If you are running, and a dog starts chasing you, stop. Dogs that are playing chase will lose interest and leave. Nev-er scream or try to run away. Do not turn your back to a dog and try to avoid eye contact. Do not smile, as showing teeth may be perceived as a sign of aggression. Keep your arms at your side with your fists clenched to protect fingers from being bitten. Try to turn sideways to the dog to appear less threatening. The old adage told to children when approached by a strange
dog is appropriate for runners: “Never run from a dog, be a tree or a log.” If a dog seems to be losing interest, slowly back away until the dog leaves. If a dog does begin to attack, try to “feed the dog your water bottle, jacket, etc., to distract it until you can escape. If you can grab a weapon, such as a stick, use it. If you have nothing to distract the dog, try to kick it in the snout. Do not use your hands or arms. At this point, yell for help. If you fall to the ground, curl up in a ball; cover your face with your arms with clenched fists covering your ears. This will avoid bites to face, head, genitalia, and vital organs. Immediate treatment of dog bites involves stopping bleeding with pressure using whatever is available. When possible, clean wounds and seek immediate medical attention even for small or superficial bites. Infection after dog bites is always a concern. Medical treatment should include evaluation for the need for tetanus pro-phylaxis and rabies treatment. All bites should be reported to authorities. In the case of feral dogs, this may help authori-ties to catch the dog and prevent other runners from being injured. In the case of an irrespon-sible dog owner, criminal charges can be filed in many states, and civil actions against the owner can be filed in all states. It is very important

that more victims take action against irrespon-sible dog owners such that future attacks can be prevented. One final consideration is the use of pepper spray against an unfriendly dog. This can be an excellent deterrent that will not permanently harm the dog. Caution must be taken however on a windy day, as the spray may blow back into the runner’s face. In conclusion, the unfortunate fact is that dog attacks, especially against runners, are on the rise. Proper steps taken to avoid such encounters are vital.

The second edition of the run poised to become the Space Coast’s next signature event – the Excalibur 10-Miler – is set for March 1, beginning and ending at Viera High. The race gets the starting gun at 7 a.m. The overall and women’s winners re-ceive Excalibur swords and the acclaim of the masses, many decked out in period costumes, while all finishers receive Excalibur crowns. Last year’s winners were West Mel-bourne’s Steve Hedgespeth in 58 minutes and 33.5 seconds and Vero Beach’s Meredith Van Veen in 1:07:15.
The race, open to runners and walk-ers, features two categories: the 10-miler for individual runners and a five-mile relay for two-person teams. The course winds by Space Coast Stadium, through Viera neighborhoods and along the dirt Powerline Road on Duda and Sons Inc. land, that the company is gener-ously opening for the race. For complete race information includ-ing a lengthy list of participant perks visit http://excaliburrun.com or call Running Zone at 321-751-8890.

Calling all Super Heroes. Friends of Children of Brevard is hosting the Super-Hero 5K run in Viera on Jan. 31 to benefit abused, abandoned and neglected children of Brevard County and support the Guard-ian ad Litem Program. The Guardian Ad Litem program consists of volunteers who work with more than 700 children in Brevard County. Daily, children are removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect by their caretakers and find themselves in Depen-dency Court, through no fault of their own. The volunteers provide a voice for children in court proceedings and to help ensure their safety in foster or relative caregivers’ homes. Friends of Children of Brevard raise funds and solicit in-kind donations to provide for the childrens’ unmet needs. Friends of Children supports the Guardian ad Litem program by assisting in volun-teer recruitment and retention. When a
child needs clothing, academic supplies or even violin lessons, Friends steps up to the plate and helps with normalcy in the home. The SuperHero run includes a free Kids Run and local mascots will be competing in the Mascot Run. SuperHe-ro race T-shirts are guaranteed if participants register before Jan. 15. Also part of the day will be a post
race super hero costume contest and fastest super hero award, door prizes and post race refreshments. Super Hero Medals will be presented for first- through third-place in each age group, top three overall and top masters. Online registration, chip timing and the finish line are being managed by Running Zone. The race starts at 8 a.m. at the Church at Viera on Stadium Parkway. The kids’ run starts at 9:15. Late registration ends at 7:45 a.m. on race day. The entry fee is $25 until Jan. 15. The entry fee for children is $15 and $22 for teams. Beyond Jan. 15 the fees increase to $30; $20 and $27 respectively. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/SuperHeroRun5K and http://www.friendsofchildrenofbrevard.org/superhero
