News Notes Page 2

My experience with the Toyotomi product line began over twenty years ago, when selling and servicing Toyostoves was part of my job responsibilities at Service Oil & Gas (SOG), first in Palmer, then in Wasilla. I took advantage of many of the classes offered by Rural Energy Enterprises (REE) over the years to expand my knowledge and familiarity with the products and to keep up with any new products and developments. This attention to detail and excellent customer service helped me build a large and loyal customer base in the Valley. After SOG was purchased and became Crowley Petroleum, I took an early “retirement” and began doing Toyo repairs part-time out of a small shop at my home base. With no advertising at all, the business built at a steady pace. Toyostoves are very popular out here in the Mat-Su Valley, and word-of-mouth was the best advertising you could ask for. I was busier than I ever expected to be! After three years of growth, I thought it made sense to expand the enterprise. At the same time, my wife, Randi, was between jobs and wondering what her next career direction should be. After several discussions weighing all the possibilities, we became business partners and opened Steve’s Toyo Stove Repair, LLC in May, 2011. We were excited to be co-owners of a brand new storefront on the very busy Knik Goose Bay Road in Wasilla, and word spread quickly that we were open for business!! Even our two Bernese Mountain Dog/Blue Tick Hound twins, the ‘Toyo Boys’, enjoy working at our shop… It’s a dream-come-true for me to run my own business, doing something I really enjoy, and sharing it with my lovely wife. We are a complete, one-stop shop. We sell, service and install Toyostoves, carry a full line of Toyo parts, and ship Toyos around the great state of Alaska. We do consultations, as well, and try to help folks out by walking them through several steps before scheduling a service call. People can bring their stoves into our shop for repair, or I will travel to them if it is more convenient. We also sell wood stoves, pellet stoves, oil-drip NordicStoves and Rinnai gas heaters. We’re proud to be a certified Toyostove dealer, and appreciate all the knowledge, support, and guidance we receive from REE, our

distributor. We support our community by having local artists display their work at our shop, we have an historic Iditarod quilt on the wall, and many of Steve’s incredible mounted fish and racks are on display. We invite you to visit us if you’re in the area to talk hunting, fishing, birding, or yes, even Toyostoves. One day, Randi and I look forward to truly retiring, but right now, we enjoy helping folks stay toasty and comfortable. BE COOL. STAY WARM.

REE offers a complete line of SharkBite Pex Tubing, Push-Fit Products and Pex-Barb Products. Pex Tubing: SharkBite® PEX tubing is a cross-linked polyethylene tubing for a wide range of residential and commercial plumbing applications. Manufactured without an oxygen barrier for potable water systems (available in white, blue, and red) and with an oxygen barrier for radiant floor and hydronic heating applications (available in orange). Push-Fit Products: It's the easiest way to join copper, CPVC or PEX pipe in any combination – with no soldering, clamps, unions or glue. Just insert the pipe and the stainless steel teeth bite down and grip

tight, while a specially formulated O-ring compresses to create a perfect seal. Disassembly is just as fast using the simple disconnect tool. So fittings and valves can be easily changed and reused. Pex-Barb Products: The SharkBite Connection System offers an extensive line of barb fittings plus manifolds, supports and tools for both clamp and crimp ring PEX tubing installations. When a water distribution project requires low cost materials, a system that utilizes PEX tubing, barb fittings and manifolds is a good choice.

ASSEMBLE ALL YOUR PLUMBING AND HYDRONIC HEATING NEEDS WITH SHARKBITE CONNECTION SYSTEMS

Have you wondered which Oil Miser water heater you should buy? When you are selling an Oil Miser water heater be advised the Oil Miser 148 unit is designed best for domestic hot water production and the Oil Miser 180 is designed best for hydronic heating. This is due to subtle water flow

characteristic differences through the heat exchanger. The Oil Miser 180 can be used for hydronic heating and domestic hot water with the addition of an indirect water heater, such as the Ergomax E23 or Navien Heat Box. Knowing how your customer will use the heater will allow you to recommend the best application. Oil Misers operate best when they are vented in the sidewall configuration. This is due to the sealed combustion and fresh air intake allowing them to operate most efficiently, thereby increasing the operating life of the units. Ensure the outside wall mounting plate is properly installed with the label up and facing outwards. This ensures that the combustion air intake spacing is correct. The flue termination should be at least 12 inches above the highest expected snow fall level. Oil Miser 180 Oil Miser 148

TECH NOTES: SETTING FUEL PUMP PRESSURE—BS36UFF, OM-148 & OM-180

When installing or servicing a Toyotomi water heater, it is very important to always check the fuel pump pressure and adjust it, if necessary. Fuel pump pressure should be set to the following values:

BS36UFF – Type A – Lot# N07 – 95.3 PSI Lot# N08 – 99.6 PSI Type B – Lot# O02 ~ P01 – 114 PSI Lot# P04 ~ - 107 PSI

OM-148/OM-180 - 192 PSI REE sells the “T” fitting with a glycerin-filled pressure gauge (part# 10005089). We also sell the “T” separately (part# 20476489). Remove the coupler from the fuel line between the top of the pump and where the fuel line enters the burner body. Be sure to use open end 12 MM wrench with a back up wrench so that you do not damage the connection. Install the fuel pump pressure gauge and fire the Oil Miser water heater. With the unit running, adjust the pressure by slowly turning the adjustment screw that is located in the lower left hand front corner of the pump. There should be a black cap covering this adjuster. Set the pump pressure to the value specified above, then recycle the power button to make the unit re-fire, and recheck its pressure. Turn the unit off, remove the tester, reconnect the coupler, and reinstall the black cap. Re-fire the unit again and test the connection for leaks. If you see a lean or sooted unit, be sure to test the pump pressure. We here at REE have had several units returned for repair without having the fuel pump pressure tested. The pump pressures were way out of parameter. These pumps may have been damaged by being run dry, or there may have been an ice plug in the fuel line or filter, causing the gravity fed pump to work under a vacuum. It is very important to maintain a constant downward slope in the fuel line from the tank to the unit. This will eliminate low points in the line where water can settle and freeze. Also, whenever possible, install the fuel filter indoors. This will prevent the filter from becoming clogged by fuel gelling in extremely cold environments.

TECH NOTES: HOW TO PROPERLY FILL OUT A TOYOTOMI WARRANTY CLAIM When filing Toyotomi warranty claims, please be sure to fill out the warranty claim forms completely. All areas of the form must be filled in, with the exception of “Distributor Number” and “Distributor Representative”, and the cost of parts. These areas will be filled by REE. If the information is not applicable or unknown, write “N/A” or “unknown”. If the warranty claim is for work done on a unit, the serial and lot numbers of the unit must be included, or the warranty claim cannot be filed. For detailed information on how to charge for labor and/or travel time, please refer to the Toyotomi Warranty Policy. If you do not have this information, contact REE Technical Support at (907)868-7952. Toyotomi does not pay labor at your rates. If the labor amount is not calculated properly, you will be paid the minimum amount, or no labor will be paid at all. If there is freight or postage being claimed, you must attach a copy of the freight bill to the warranty claim. Add “shipping” in the column under “part name” and write the amount under “total cost”. Also, it is very important that you send the correct copies of the warranty claim form to REE. Each warranty claim form includes 5 copies: The WHITE, BLUE, and GREEN copies should be sent to REE. Mark the envelope “Attn: Warranty”. The PINK copy should be kept with the faulty part until you receive payment for the claim, at which time the part can be discarded. Do not send the faulty part to REE unless instructed to do so. This will eliminate unnecessary shipping charges. If Toyotomi wants the faulty part returned, we will let you know, at which time you should send the faulty part, along with the PINK copy, to REE. Mark the package “Attn: Warranty”. The YELLOW copy, marked “Dealer Copy”, is for your records. Do not send this copy. Filing warranty claims properly will ensure that you receive the maximum possible payment, as well as reducing the time it takes for the claim to be processed and paid. If you have any questions, or if you would like a copy of these instructions for reference, please contact REE Technical Support.
