Hello! My name is Beki and I’m working with Cathy as the
Children’s and Youth Worker for the benefice. I’ll be doing lots of
new and exciting things with the children and young people. I am
particularly looking forward to planning and developing Funday
Sunday services and Messy Church and looking further ahead,
maybe starting a youth group. I grew up in Yorkshire, and in 2009
moved to Kent to study Theology at Canterbury Christ Church
University and then went on to do an internship in a church in the
centre of Canterbury. In August 2012 I married Luke and we live just on the outskirts of
Canterbury.
I really enjoy a cup of tea, and maybe a good book, craft project or a chit chat, so
if you want to get to know me I’ll be more than happy to drink a cup of Yorkshire Tea

St. Nicholas Players The players next production is a comedy called “Not Now Darling” by Ray Cooney and John Chapman. The play recounts the trials and tribulations of a would be lathario, who is a furrier. The farcical situation involves staff and customers in various romantic relationship problems.

Dear Friends,
I recently went on holiday and during that time away, every day I
passed a particular wall and was confronted with the following saying
by John Lennon:
“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”
And aren’t we all just so busy making other plans? Busy planning
what we are having for lunch, busy arguing with the children, busy
planning tomorrow’s party. Whatever it is that we are so busy planning, “life” is what
is happening to us at that moment, in fact at this very moment. So, what are you doing
with your life?
In the Bible, in John 10:10, Jesus said: “I came that they may have life and have it
abundantly”. Abundantly means a superabundance, excessive, overflowing, surplus,
over and above, more than enough, profuse, extraordinary, above the ordinary more
than sufficient; so how is that for a promise?
God wants this abundance for each and every one of us. God’s covenant, in
other words his contract or promise to us is a covenant for abundant life and as we
give ourselves to God, God gives His total self, His love, to us. And how often can we
say that we have been given so much that is absolutely free, with no strings attached?
Hopefully, even though you are very busy, I do hope that you will have time to
read the following letter and perhaps, just perhaps, be able to fit in a few moments
with the One who is always there, just waiting for us with His open loving arms, just
waiting to love us and welcome us home.
A letter from God
When you awoke, I was there, waiting upon you. I wanted to share in your
love. At breakfast you listened to the radio and rushed your breakfast. You had no
time to speak to me. I waited but you did not turn to me.
Though you travelled by rail you spent your time on your laptop and reading
the news. You did not once give me a thought, and I waited for you to turn to me.
During your work there were a lot of small gaps. There was more time at lunch, but
you did other things and had no time for me. Yet, I waited for you to turn to me.
At the end of the day you watched television and played a game. For a while
you dozed before you had your last drink of the day and I waited for you to turn to
me. Now, I thought, you will have time – just before you go to sleep. Instead, you
read until you were tired. You worried about tomorrow and at last fell asleep.
I will surround you with my love this night. I will wait for you tomorrow and if
you do not remember I will be there the day after. I will wait until you turn to me.

A CD specially produced for Kingsdown Conservation Group by David Harding is now available. The cover illustrations are taken from paintings by Don Arnold, Kingsdown's oldest resident and about a dozen local people (two or three no longer with us) offer first-hand
reminisces of by-gone days. It's nostalgic, yes, but it's also historic. And it's evocative, vivid and fascinating. Everyone who loves our village is sure to want a copy. By the time you read this we will be well into the new academic year, and the glorious Summer break will be a distant memory. In September we welcomed Mrs Katherine Chapman and Mrs Marie Teal to the Teaching team. They will be teaching classes 3 and R. We also welcomed our new Foundation children into the Tiny Tigers and we hope that this will be the start of a long and happy
partnership. Over the Summer Break you may have noticed that there was some work being carried out externally in school. The offices have now been totally refurbished and one of the mobiles were redecorated. Many thanks to Peter Baldwin for carrying out this work for us. Last year was really successful for Kingsdown and Ringwould CEP School and it finished with a set of very good Key Stage 2 results. Well done to all of the children involved and we wish them all the best at Secondary School!
Many exciting learning opportunities have been planned for the coming year and I look forward to sharing these with you through the Rural Roundup. Jo Hygate

Ringwould-with-Kingsdown Parish Council met at Kingsdown Village Hall on Monday 9th September 2013 following a summer break. Residents from Kings Close approached the Council to inform them that Dover District Council may be considering putting a tarmac ‘car park’ on the green in the road. The Parish Council had not been formerly notified of any works regarding this at the time of the meeting, but assured the residents they would get in touch with Dover District Council and enquire. The Parish Council have had reports from members of the public, and Councillors have seen it for themselves, that the bins situated by the public conveniences have been overflowing some days throughout the Summer. The Parish Council have been in touch with Dover District Council regarding this and are waiting for a response. David Whittington from the Neighbourhood Planning Team at Dover District Council is hoping to attend the next Parish Council meeting to give a presentation regarding how to set up a Neighbourhood Plan. Caring About the Community - Do You? Arnolds Alley (ER4) In response to the letter in last month’s Rural Roundup from Mrs Pam Hough; The Parish Council Clerk has written to Mrs Hough. The extract below sets out the current situation and we are now waiting for KCC Public rights of way officer’s response.
The Parish Council have written to Kent County Council regarding ‘Arnold’s Alley’ otherwise known as ER4 twice in the past year to be informed that it was not a ‘priority’ and the budget wasn’t big enough to mend every foot-path in the county. The Parish Council have recently undertaken the task of clearing many footpaths around the Parish, but the Council is aware that ER4 is still very hazardous.
The Clerk is intending to write again to Kent County Council but with your permission would like to include a copy of the letter that was publicised in Rural Roundup. As well as that, Councillors discussed other options of how the Parish Council could solve the problem and have decided to get in contact with Kent County Council and look into the Parish Council being given permission to complete the work themselves, but with the approval from Kent County Council, as it is their land.

From the editor Hello Everyone, Well, I have only heard from two people regarding the Sunflowers, both live in Kingsdown. If I don’t hear from anyone else by the 14th October, the closing date for copy for the November issue I will consider these the winners. I must once again thank my trusty helpers, who every month, or at
least ten months of the year, give up time to help produce and deliver what seems to be a well received publication. Thanks also go to all who send in such interesting articles. It would be great if I could get someone with the knowledge of Microsoft Publisher as an ‘understudy’ to help me out in an emergency. Don’t forget that each month a front cover picture is needed, so all you photographers out there keep your eyes open and your cameras at the ready for any unusual shots. Our speaker for our September Meeting was Peter Ewart who told us about “Smuggling in Kent” in days gone by. His fascinating stories related to the 17th/18th Century when one of the largest smuggling gangs in East Kent and Sussex was the Hawkhurst Gang. Not only was contraband brought into the country but wool was also exported illegally from here to the Low Countries. Churches were often used to hide the contraband. We were very pleased to welcome four visitors to our meeting and we

Where did August go to? And all that glorious weather. Because as I write for the Rural Roundup it is so cold outside that I haven't opened the greenhouse today other than to pick the tomatoes and harvest the chillies from the six plants I purchased way back in May. They are
called Apache, quite small in size, but boy! do they pack a punch. Just one is enough to give any dish a kick and I love them. I freeze them and later on during the winter months I will be trying to make some Chilli Jam or relish. The only thing I must remember is not to put my fingers anywhere near my face!! Ansley Harris once said that his mother always rubbed her hands with oil before handling chillies so I will give that a try. Changing the subject – I would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in making the Annual Show such a success. The committee, the spouses, the volunteers, the exhibitors, the members, those who donated prizes for the raffle and all those who came in the afternoon to make for a wonderful atmosphere. Thank you very much – it made all the hard work worth while. So here's to next year being even better. The AGM is on Monday 28th October so please come along to see how we have faired this year. Tea and Chat in Ripple…The September Tea and Chat meeting was held in Ripple Village Hall on the 9th of the month. In addition to the usual activities, members had great pleasure in presenting Joe English with a cake to mark his 75th birthday. The next meeting, in the Village Hall at 2.00pm on Monday, 14th October, will be a ‘Celebration of Harvest’.

Some comments arising from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Meeting. 1. Residents living on Strakers Hill in East Studdal are perturbed by the speed at which large tractors and other vehicles are using the road. The bends on the hill make it dangerous for pedestrians walking when vehicles have a limited view. KCC Highways have been asked to clean the road signs in the parish as they have become rather dirty and some names are not clear. 2. It is hoped that a V fast ‘hot spot’ will be installed in Studdal Church Hall very shortly. This will enable persons using laptops in the hall to access the internet. 3. The Chairman commented on how good the flowers in tubs looked on the Three Horse Shoes green. He thanked Doug for tending the plants. The co-ordinators of Spectrum, Jam & Jabba and Messy Church thanked the Parish Council for their donation towards items which the youth organisations wished to buy. 4. The running of the Parish website has now been taken over by Councillor Carolyn Clews. She will be putting the monthly Agendas and Minutes for the Parish Council meetings on the site and also other articles of interest. Carolyn would like parishioners to submit poems to the website so that a ‘poem of the month’ can be edited on the site. The website can be found under: www.suttonbydoverpckentparishes.gov.uk 5. Simon said that it was with deep sadness that the parish had lost a dear friend, Barbara Odell. Barbara had, over many years, been an active supporter of the Parish Council as well as a friend to many people in the village. Her enthusiasm for engaging in many organisations and befriending people will be sadly missed. Our next Parish Meeting will be held on Tuesday 1st October at 7.30 pm in Studdal Church Hall. Everyone is welcome.

The Landmark Show Choir is open to adults with no audition, need to read music or experience required, just a love of singing! Branches meet Wednes-days in Deal at the Landmark Centre 5-6.30pm and at Oddfellows Club, Pencester Road, Dover 12.30-1.30pm. We are looking for new members and regularly perform locally (optional).
Maddie will run a strings workshop with Mike Bacon on cello on Saturday 12th October 10.30am-12.30pm at Charlton Church Hall, St Alphege Road, Dover. Aimed at beginners and intermediates (violin, viola, cello or double bass) you will learn music from all genres, and enjoy playing with others as you develop your confidence and technique. The workshop costs £10 and should be booked in advance.
Auditions are now open for Maddie’s Melody Makers, a group for talented young singers aged 13-25 with a training section for ages 8-12. We perform group songs and solos at high profile events throughout East Kent. Our next performance will be as part of the Youth Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall in December.

Dear Residents We have held a meeting with Liam Wooltorton of the East Kent Engineering Partnership (EKEP) who has been commissioned by Dover District Council (DDC) to develop plans for the coastal defences at Kingsdown. The EKEP was established in June 2007 bringing together the engineering teams of the five East Kent Coastal Authorities; Canterbury, Dover, Shepway, Swale and Thanet and are very experienced in coastal defence works. The short-term In the short term the EKEP will be securing the failed wall to the North of the Old Lifeboat House. This will be carried out by installing steel sheet piles at the bottom of the seawall, repairing the cracks and inserting metal tie bars which will be attached to buried concrete blocks. The worst of the nearby groynes will be patched up, by using the upper planks to fill in the holes at the base of the groynes. Shingle will then be recycled from Walmer to fill the worst depleted groyne bays. It is felt that this will be sufficient to help the wall withstand the winter storms. The work should take place fairly quickly, the contract is out to tender now and the works will hopefully be completed by the end of October, which is excellent news. The longer-term The longer-term plan is to replace the 14 existing groynes with 16 realigned ones, and to replenish the beach. Over 60 thousand cubic metres of beach material is required to replenish the beach which would cost nearly £2 million if all new beach was imported. To make the new scheme economically viable the EKEP are looking at various beach recycling options for replenishing the new groyne bays over a period of years following installation of the new groynes. The EKEP is working on a Project Appraisal Report (PAR) which will be submit-ted to the Environment Agency. It is hoped that funding approval will be achieved to allow work to start next financial year. To keep costs to a minimum, piles that are in a good condition will be recycled into the new groynes. The EKEP is cautiously optimistic that this scheme will hopefully achieve EA funding. The scheme that is being prepared by the EKEP is under the £8m estimate previously given by Halcrow, ensuring that it has a realistic chance of achieving funding. Next steps The EKEP will keep in touch with representatives for Kingsdown, and are happy to attend a public consultation meeting once funding has been granted, to present their plans. We were extremely encouraged by the practical, thorough approach being taken by EKEP and look forward to working with them to see these plans through to completion. We would like to pay homage to Lance Corporal to Henry Christopher Friend. Some years back and certainly before the internet , as I was walk-ing through the Kingsdown Churchyard Yard I noticed a grave near the entrance on which was written “In Loving Memory of my dear husband Christopher Friend who passed away 13th January 1930 aged 85, Mary wife of the above who passed away 29th June 1931 aged 81, Henry Christopher youngest son of the above (his parents) killed in the Great War 19th of August 1915, aged 24, buried at Ploegsteert Belgium”.
The name Ploegsteert was not unknown to me, being a village in Belgium not very far from where my parents lived was in France.
As I mentioned to my friend Chris Price that I knew Ploegseert and that I would like to find Henry Christopher’s grave but didn’t really know where to start, but within the next day I had all the information I needed to get me started.
In the 1911 census of England and Wales, Henry Christopher is reg-istered as being 20 years of age, single, milkman and living at “Oakleigh” in Kingsdown. He enlisted in Deal and joined as a volunteer, the 6th (Service) Battalion the Royal East Kent Regiment (the Buffs) probably during August 1914, He trained in Purfleet and Aldershot and sailed from Folkestone to Boulogne between to 29th May and 1st June 1915. On 6th June after a short stay in Boulogne and St Omer, they arrived at the Meteren-Steenwerck area and after some more instruction took over the section of front line at Ploegsteert Wood on the 23rd June 1915.
I have found his final resting place, he is in a lovely quiet area, he is among 22 soldiers from his battalion, he obviously was a good soldier as he was awarded the Victory Medal, the British War Medal and the 1915 star and was Lance Corporal. Meetings start at 11am, (with coffee being served from 10.15am) when the audience is entertained by outstanding lecturers making digital presentations on subjects such as the Surrealists, the Pre-Raphaelites, War Artists, English Cabinet-Making, The Wallace Collection, Mrs Beeton, David Hockney, Tracey Emin and many more. We All Need a Friend Friends and family can be a blessing, but what if your family lives far away and all your friends can’t visit you for any reason? For a growing number of our community this is the case. With our increasingly ageing population one of our biggest problems is growing social
isolation. Loneliness is not only unpleasant; it can lead to a breakdown in mental and physical health. Care services are stretched and even those people who receive regular physical care find
that their providers often simply do not have the time to stop and talk. In recognition of this problem befriending schemes are being introduced in many locations and here in Dover District we have our own scheme, aiming to provide volunteers who can offer
that much needed regular friendly contact. This might simply be a chat and a cuppa on a regular basis – or even just a weekly phone call to make sure the other person is alright. So what is involved in being a Befriender? Befrienders work with vulnerable people, so
we do ask you to go through a simple vetting process and attend initial training – with the option of further on-going training as required. Once that process is complete we aim to match you with someone who is based fairly near you and who has compatible interests. Throughout your volun-
teering with us you will attend support meetings with the co-ordinator around once every twelve weeks – and there is always someone on the end of a phone if you need advice or support.
Your role will be to act as the “good neighbour” – offering company, keeping an eye on the person and being able to flag up other sources of support or services if and when these are needed. Our aim is to support and develop the independence of scheme users, so you are there to
help them help themselves. Why become a Befriender? The friendship in such a relationship often goes both ways – we all like company and sharing stories and experiences with someone else can be both interesting

A SIGNIFICANT ADDITION TO THE LESS CAMPAIGN
As one of the UK's elite land-based colleges, Hadlow was one of the first education institutions to
recognise the significance of climate change and the related environmental impact and issues. This awareness resulted in development of a policy - the Sustainable Development Strategy.
Launched in 2008, it embraced widely ranging green policies designed to make the most efficient use of all resources including energy and water. In addition, the LESS campaign included commitment to environmentally sustainable waste management.
Since its institution, LESS has evolved and developed in a variety of ways which combine to make the Hadlow College community - embracing all staff, students and stakeholders - a centre of sustainable excellence.
In 2011 Hadlow produced a Carbon Management Plan. Signed off by the Carbon Trust, it commits the college to reducing its carbon footprint by 25% by 2014.
The Greenbikes project being launched today is designed to reduce the college staff's
use of cars for travel to various parts of the 1,100 acre estate.

The Parish Council is hoping that David Wittington from DDC will make a presentation about neighbourhood planning at their monthly meeting. Please see the PC notice board outside Del’s shop for more information. Tuesday November 12 – 7.30 for 8.00pm at Kingsdown School Conservation Areas, Character Appraisals and Neighbourhood Plans. An illustrated talk by Clive Alexander, DDC’s principal heritage planner and urban designer. Members £3:00, non-members £4:00, includes free glass of wine and refreshments
Can You Help us to Honour our Hero?
Many of you will have known Squadron Leader Anthony Downing RAF and his family; next year,
2014, is the centenary of the start of the First World War, so this seems to be a suitable time to add his name to the War Memorial in Kingsdown Church as he lost his life as a result of the conflict in Afghanistan.
We know that many people will wish to contribute so we are starting a designated fund for this purpose. There is no space on the War Memorial to add the names of those killed in more
