COMPETENCES, CONSOLIDATED

02 | EDITORIAL

DEAR READER:

„Connecting Worlds“ is the new Militzer & Münch motto – and none could fit the Militzer & Münch Group better. For to us, connecting continents, persons, and cultures, and putting into motion more than goods, is high demand and company philosophy at the same time.

In connecting worlds, a decisive factor is the network. Here, Militzer & Münch banks on the four pillars Road, Air, Sea, and Projects. Via road, we connect all of Eurasia and North Africa – be it China and Russia, or France and Kazakhstan. In air and sea freight, we operate worldwide with customer oriented solutions. Two years ago we already set out to expand our strong position in the air and sea segments. Under new management, we are now resolutely following through with this develop-ment.

Three elements are of major importance here: For one, we are expand-ing our global network step by step. Since last year, we have been active in the growth markets of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka; we founded a new air and sea unit in Italy and signed a strategic partnership in Brazil. Secondly, we bank on confirmed air freight capacities and new trade lanes, and lastly, we offer our customers numer-ous additional services, for instance for fixed sea freight rates.

More on the current and future developments of our air and sea segments in this issue’s FOCUS starting on page 6.

Our CIS Competence Center has adopted our motto “Connecting Worlds” in a very spe-cific way: The team offers companies interested in entering the Russian mar-ket an ‘all-round care free package’. It covers eve-rything from analysis and consultancy to planning, obtaining the necessary documents, to transport logistics services. The German – Russian team of experts has already successfully accompanied

several market entries and the construction of sev-eral manufacturing sites. Read everything on the CIS Competence Center and our local services on page 10 ff.

Five years now we have been collaborating with CargoLine, the groupage cooperation. Here, too, it is all about connecting worlds – via international networks. To our custom-ers, the collaboration opens new possibilities in the West European mar-kets, while we do trans-port logistics services for CargoLine in those regions that the groupage cooperation had not been able to cover before – a real benefit for customers on both sides. Find more on this on page 18.

As always, the new COM-PASS keeps you posted

– enjoy reading!

Kind regards,

New: Portugal – Maghreb

For customers with regular shipments to Morocco and Tunisia, Militzer & Münch now offers regular weekly depar-tures from Portugal. The trans-ports start from Porto going to Tanger, Casablanca, and Tunis.

Militzer & Münch has launched the new groupage line espe-cially for customers from the fashion industry; many French fashion labels have their wares produced in the Maghreb. Most of the cargo space is tak-en up by bales of Portuguese cloth. They go to garment factories where blouses, pants and other textile articles are made from them. Apart from bales of cloth, the box trailers also carry general cargo.

Sven-Boris Brunner new Managing Director

In March 2014, Sven-Boris Brunner was appointed Managing Director of M&M Militzer & Münch GmbH. The new MD is responsible for Militzer & Münch Germany’s business segments Road and Projects. Brunner, 41, comes with long years of experience in leadership with managerial responsibilities; before joining Militzer & Münch, he was on the management board of a big logistics concern.

The focus of Sven-Boris Brun-ner’s activities is on Northern and Eastern Europe, especially on Russia/the CIS. Since 2012 already, Brunner has been heading the Militzer & Münch CIS Competence Center in Stockstadt near Aschaffenburg, from where he works also in his new function as MD.

“Taking the segments Road and Projects as well as the Russia activities of the Militzer & Münch Group to a further stage is an exciting task”, says Sven-Boris Brunner: “I look forward to the new challenge.”

Quality - confirmed

The Quality Management Sys-tem (QMS) of Militzer & Münch is certified according to inter-national norm ISO 9001:2008. In March 2014, Militzer & Münch was conferred the new certificate, valid for the 97 loca-tions of all national Militzer & Münch units between Morocco and China. Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) examined documentation and implementation of the QMS in their audit.

“We have opted for a multi-site approach”, says Harald Schei-finger, Head of Group Control-ling at Militzer & Münch. “That way, our customers can be sure that our entire Group world-wide works according to standardized processes and with one standard, uniform management system.” The certificate is valid for another three years, the first having been issued in 2011.

For two major exhibitions that took place within a short period of time in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, Militzer & Münch was in charge of all the logistics requirements.

Napoleon in KazakhstanFrom December 2013 un-til March 2014, the Palace of Independence showed exhibits on the subject of

“Napoleon. Life, Legend“. Paintings, manuscripts, sculptures, textiles and articles of furniture from 80 French museums reached Astana via truck and plane.

The Militzer & Münch Ka-zakhstan team organized

the transports including customs clearance, made special wrapping mate-rial available and was in charge of the complete range of handling servic-es from unloading at the airport to the on-forward-ing to the place of exhi-bition, where Militzer & Münch experts unpacked the valuable goods and installed them in the exhi-bition halls.

Art from SpainBack in autumn of 2013 already, Astana was the venue for the “Collection Maxam – Spanish Painting since 1900”. A true pre-miere for art aficionados, as the collection traveled abroad for the first time ever. Militzer & Münch was in charge of all the logis-tics involved. “In order to guarantee smooth trans-port, our specially trained team managed the entire process”, says Kostas San-

dalcidis, Regional Manag-ing Director Middle East and Central Asia.

Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish Prime Minister, opened the exhibition. The venue is interesting, too: The Maxam Collection was presented at the Pyramid of Peace and Harmony, which houses the Kulanshi Art Center.

“The exhibits shown at the Napoleon exhibition alone are worth 23 million euros”, says Kostas Sandalcidis.

“With the transport of such unique works of art, we do not leave anything to chance.”

World economy has grown con-tinually since 2010 – by three percent last year. Parallel to that, world-wide trade is increasing. Experts even forecast a boom: As to HSBC’s cur-rent “Global Connections Report”, global trade in goods will almost quadru-plicate by 2030 – and will thus pick up speed again, growing markedly faster than recently. That entails huge opportunities for industry and commerce – provided they can count on dependable global networks. “Developing our world-wide air and sea freight network is one

of our main targets”, says CEO Alexei Kovalenko.

“We bank on a high-per-formance network that our customers can rely on.”

Stronger in Shanghai In this network, world record export nation China plays a central role. Militzer & Münch has been active in the Peo-ple’s Republic for exactly 20 years now; its know-how reflects the in-depth experience. High quality service and reliability are essential in China. And this is where Militzer & Münch can score: the Group offers to and from China the entire air and sea logistics service range with door-to-door service, warehousing and multi-modal transports. In addi-tion to that, the Chinese team offers comprehen-sive services from trans-

“With this high-value offer, we have established Mil-itzer & Münch with seven offices so far in China”, says Klaus Jäger, Manager Global Air Freight, Militzer & Münch. “Now, we are adding special emphasis on Shanghai, China’s larg-est and most modern city.” Militzer & Münch thus follows the global goods flows even more closely; Shanghai has, after all, been the world’s biggest container port since 2011.

NEW TEAM LEADERSKlaus Jäger and Gunnar Haid are re-sponsible for the future development of the Militzer & Münch air and sea segments. And Militzer & Münch China has a new management, too.

Before Klaus Jäger was ap-pointed, about a year ago, Militzer & Münch’s first Manager Global Air Freight, he was responsible for air freight at interna-tional forwarding

corporations in the US and in Germany. In short: Jäger, 56, knows the field in-side out.

Gunnar Haid has been responsible for global sea freight with Militzer & Münch for a short while only, but has been familiar with the segment for many years already. At Militzer &

Münch, Haid, 38, started his career almost three years ago as Manager Sea Freight Ger-many and Branch Manager in Ham-burg.

Anthony Chan works at the Shanghai office. For over a year now, he has been Managing Director Militzer & Münch China. Anthony Chan is of Chinese descent and has 15

years of experience working in the man-agement of diverse international logis-tics companies in Europe and China.

>>In Asia, there is a high level of economic growth also in the Indian Subcon-tinent. In order to provide its own capacities to the increasing goods flows from this region, Militzer & Münch has been oper-ating in Pakistan, Bangla-desh, and Sri Lanka since last year already.

New in ItalyIn Europe, too, Militzer & Münch is strengthening the existing network: In Italy, a new air and sea freight team began oper-

ating recently. The head-quarters of M&M Militzer & Münch air say cargo srl is at Rome’s Fumicino, Italy’s biggest airport, an-other branch office oper-ates from Milano. Headed by Valter Crescioli, the Italian air and sea freight team offers its customers world-wide services, with the focus being on Asia as well as North and South America. The services are in such demand that there are already plans to open a third location.

Brazil: strategic partnershipExperts give positive fore-casts also for economic growth in Latin America. In Brazil, by far the big-gest national economy of South America, Militzer & Münch has energized its activities.

“Brazil as the most im-portant market of South America is the key to the region”, says Klaus Jäger:

“I am glad we were able to win in Pirâmide SeaAir a renowned company as our strategic partner. The

With new products, partners and trade lanes Militzer & Münch resolutely pursues the course adopted in the air and sea freight segments.

Militzer & Münch is noting an increase in de-mand for new products and services –as well in the sea freight as in the air freight sector. A summary:

NEW PRODUCTS AND TRADE LANES

M&M SEA FIXED RATE

Militzer & Münch’s new sea freight product largely bal-ances rate fluctuations. So far, daily changing sea freight tariffs have made calculating difficult for importers. With the new product, a fixed base rate is agreed on with the customers that remains valid within a certain range even when the rates change. Says Gunnar Haid, Head of Global Sea Freight: “With the fixed rate, we offer also small and mid-size ocean freight importers a planning reliability that compares to what big customers enjoy.”

M&M SEA WAREHOUSING

Logistics solutions for sea freight are no unknown territory for Militzer & Münch – for years, the Group has been offering warehous-ing in China and Europe. The services are be-ing expanded under the new product name

– for instance in Hamburg. Where, among others, Militzer & Münch stores goods from a packaging film manufacturer in Dubai. The cargo arrives via sea in Hamburg, is temporar-ily stored there, and then distributed all over Europe. Value adding services are part of the warehousing product, too: For the export trading company Wachsmuth & Krogmann, Militzer & Münch’s services comprise, apart from storage and distribution, also labeling among others. Recently, the Militzer & Münch team attached new labels to 27,000 parasols.

company is very well posi-tioned; quality and perfor-mance are impressive.”

Pirâmide, a Brazilian air and sea freight logistics company, was founded 20 years ago and now oper-ates from five locations in Brazil. Apart from end-to-end air and sea transport handling including pre- and on-carriage , the ser-vice portfolio of Militzer & Münch’s new partner also comprises AOG and hazardous goods services, customs management, insurance services as well as shipment tracking and warehousing.

Thrust for North AmericaThe model for the coop-eration with Pirâmide is the strategic partnership with Pilot Freight services that was signed two years ago and has developed very well since. Pilot, the biggest privately owned US forwarder, is the exclu-sive distributor of Militzer & Münch shipments to North America; while Militzer & Münch feeds

overseas freight from Pilot into the Militzer & Münch network. “As the most significant export market worldwide, North Ameri-ca is of great importance for global trade”, explains Klaus Jäger. “The planned Free Trade Agreement between the EU and the USA will give these goods flows additional thrust.”

Militzer & Münch is also pushing the develop-ment of new services and trade lanes (see below), systematically pursuing the path mapped out for the air and sea sectors. Clearly in the focus, also in the future, is the benefit for the air and sea freight customer.

M&M AIR FIRM CAPACITIES

Also in the air freight segment, Militzer & Münch stays on its growth course and has developed new air freight products that bank on Militzer & Münch ‘s own confirmed capacities. The main lanes are China/Hong Kong – Central Europe, Los Angeles/New York – Frankfurt, and, newly added: Chicago – Frankfurt as well as Taiwan – Frankfurt

M&M AIR AVIATION SERVICE

Militzer & Münch’s aviation services are a special offer: With its own, specialized departments, the Militzer & Münch Group does spare parts logistics for airlines. Thus, Militzer & Münch provides almost all major Chinese airlines with spare parts from Europe and Asia. “The core of the supply chain is timely cus-toms clearance and delivery of the spare parts”, says Klaus Jäger, Manager Global Air Freight. “And that holds true for the entire range of parts – from the tiny screw to the complete jet engine.”

Russia

COMPETENCES, CONSOLIDATEDFor Militzer & Münch, Russia has always been among the most important markets. More and more companies want to profit from the huge sales market and set up their own locations in the country. The transport logistics Group Militzer & Münch is following the trend and has expanded its service portfolio: Militzer & Münch now offers one-stop comprehensive consultancy services that facilitate the entry into the Russian market.

Covering an area of over 17 million square kilometers, Russia is the largest country on the globe. Over the past few years, more and more foreign companies have been setting up their own manufacturing sites in Russia. Yet administrative proceedings, customs processes, and not least the Russian language, turn entering the Russian mar-ket into quite a challenge. This is where Militzer & Münch acts as an impor-tant intermediary.

Customer orientation via customer consultation In 2012, Militzer & Münch founded the CIS Com-petence Center in Stock-stadt near Aschaffenburg, Germany. About a dozen Russia experts from the German branch offices in Stockstadt, Stuttgart and Nurnberg as well as numerous colleagues from the Russian Militzer & Münch unit (ZAO Militzer

& Münch) constitute the Center’s core team. Man-aging Directors Marina Dshegrij and Sven-Boris Brunner, the head of the Competence Center, work closely together on all pro-jects. At the Competence Center, Militzer & Münch not only bundles all Russia activities, but also harness-es the Militzer & Münch expertise to the customers’ benefit.

“We have compiled a prod-uct range that by far over-reaches the pure transport from A to B; our service begins at a much earlier stage”, says Alexei Kova-lenko, CEO of Militzer & Münch International Hold-ing AG. “With the com-prehensive consultancy portfolio we offer, we sup-port our customers from the beginning in establish-ing their own production plants, and facilitate their entry into the Russian mar-ket.”

An all-round, carefree package for RussiaThanks to Militzer & Münch’s own, locally root-ed Russian unit, and the strong team in Germany, Militzer & Münch is familiar

with the requirements of West-European customers, but also with the condi-tions of the Russian market. Contrary to competitors, Militzer & Münch is thus able to exactly analyze, in advance, complex processes for the custom-ers, to mediate between customers and the Rus-sian authorities, to point out potential risks and to explain administrative specifications. From the authorization for launch-ing operations to customs documentation, to product certification: Militzer & Münch procures all the necessary documents and handles the purchase of technical equipment. “The bottom line is: We provide our customers with a com-plete set-up that meets all the prerequisites for their market entry. On de-mand also including an IT structure”, says Sven-Boris Brunner.

REGION | 11

Russia is almost fifty times the size of Germany. As much as the countries vary geographically, they are nevertheless close-ly linked economically. Russia boasts an enormous abundance of natural resources and is Germany’s most important energy supplier. One third of the oil and almost half the gas come from Russian sources. On the other hand, Germany counts among Russia’s biggest trade partners: In 2013, the Federal Republic held third place behind China and the Netherlands, with a trade turnover of over 56 billion Euros. “Made in Ger-many“ scores high; especially products from the automobile, mechanical engineering and plant design sectors, but also medical, pharmaceutical, chemical or technological products are in high demand.

Many German companies profit from the huge market in the East with their own local organizations: With about 6,000 esta-blishments, more German companies are active in Russia than the sum total from all other EU states.

The customer benefits from planning reliability and transparency. A true added value – one that does not even yet include the transport of goods. Sven-Boris Brunner and Marina Dshegrij agree:

“It is our aim to build up long-term partnerships. Our consultancy service is a highly decisive factor in this strategy, as it helps build a stable basis of trust.”

The service called “trans-port” mostly comes as a corollary then. Once the CIS Competence Center is successfully accom-panying a company in entering the market, the same company, as a rule,

also will rely on Militzer & Münch for subsequent logistics needs. Thus, the Competence Center consulted and supported a big concern from the medical engineering sec-tor in setting up a dialysis unit in the Russian market

– and has now received the orders for the transports involved. After cooperat-ing successfully over some months, and having had the support of the Militzer & Münch experts, major customers from the auto-motive sector, too, rely on Militzer & Münch‘s trans-port logistics know-how.

Competency from the bottom upThe basis for this compre-hensive consultancy ser-vice is the competence of

the staff. Militzer & Münch believes in training skilled staffers from the very basics to become experts, and in coaching them with specific, advanced professional development programs. To this end, Militzer & Münch consist-ently invests in its own manpower and makes the expertise of the personnel available across teams via the closely linked network of its national units.

“In Russia, we grow faster than the market – and we aim at holding that level in the future”, says Alexei Kovalenko. “We see big opportunities in the ten-dency towards foreign-owned production sites, and we will take advan-tage of this potential by

consistently applying our know-how. The excellent cooperation of the team at the CIS Competence Center, and the satisfac-tion of our customers, prove that we are on the perfect track with this strategy.”

The preparations for the out-of-gauge and heavy lift transports started back in October 2012, when permits and customs docu-ments were obtained and the route was planned. The destination: a construction site about 400 kilometers north of Magadan. Com-ing from the USA, Canada, Germany, France, South Africa, China and many other countries, the project goods was first shipped to the port city on the Sea of Okhotsk. Militzer & Münch then trucked the cargo through Eastern Siberia, on board special trucks and escorted by the police.

Narrow mountain passes, dirt tracks, and tempera-tures as low as minus 50 ° C turned the big project into

a challenge that only a tried and true Russia specialist can master. “Conditions were not favorable, it is true, but projects in Russia are a home game for us”, says Managing Director Marina Dshegrij. Thanks to the

close cooperation with all partners concerned and the Militzer & Münch units involved, ZAO Militzer & Münch successfully com-pleted the order.

Cranes, rolls, generators, drills: The Moscow branch of ZAO Militzer & Münch recently transported the complete equipment for a gold mining site to Russia’s East.

Mr. Brunner, what ma-kes Russia so fascina-ting for you?Well, just think of the immensity of the country with nine different time zones! This is a highly interesting market with enormous volumes and lots of potential behind it. Yet it is also a market that forces you to think out-side the box, because in many respects it does not function like other Euro-pean markets. In Russia, there is no static system

– everything is continually changing, is in constant flow. What you need here, again and again, is crea-tivity in order to come up with new solutions. This is why Russia is still so exciting for me even after 20 years!

What are the basic facts to know when entering the Russian market?Communication is a truly decisive factor here. If you want to participate in the market, you should be familiar with the lan-guage, and, in the ideal case, with the technical terms of your indust-ry. This is certainly an obstacle, but it can also be a door-opener. In Rus-sia, personal contact is valued even higher than in Germany - it is the ba-sis for good cooperation. A meeting with Russian business partners never serves business purposes only, it also a means for intercultural and personal exchange.

You speak Russian. How often are you in Russia? For meetings with custo-mers and other appoint-ments I am in Russia re-gularly, about once every three months. More fre-quently, when important appointments are sche-duled. Other than that, the Militzer & Münch Group has excellent re-presentatives in Russia in ZAO Militzer & Münch and Trasko. ZAO Militzer & Münch operates mainly in the Moscow and St. Petersburg areas; Trasko is well-positioned ac-ross the whole area and serves as a road hauler, among others, for Militzer & Münch. Almost all the personnel of ZAO Milit-zer & Münch and Trasko are Russian native spea-kers – they are thus very close to the customers. Moreover, ZAO Militzer & Münch is an important part of the CIS Compe-tence Center and works closely together with our colleagues in Germany. One can rightly say: The door is open for us.

How important is the cooperation of the teams? It is a fundamental factor of success – and this not only holds true for the cooperation between Russia and Germany, but for all other national Militzer & Münch units as well. We are proud to be present with our own organizations in almost

all countries, contrary to our competitors. Most of the colleagues have long years of experience in their fields and are true specialists for their region. I would like to develop this advantage and make even better use of the local expertise by closely linking our natio-nal teams.

You are talking about your future aims. Any more plans as yet? We have successfully established the CIS Competence Center – now we want to further optimize processes. At the moment, we are restructuring the Russia activities of M&M Militzer & Münch GmbH. We will cluster our service port-folio according to specific industries that have the highest importance for the Russian market. With this new strategic ap-proach, we will be able to even better cater to the requirements of our cus-tomers from the different industries concerned.

Thank you very much for your time!

“The door is open”

Since March 2014, Sven-Boris Brunner has been Managing Director of the German M&M Militzer & Münch GmbH that operates in the Road segment. He is a Russia expert. Since he was trained to be a forwarder 20 years ago, he has had a deep interest in Russia, and as the head of the Militzer & Münch CIS Competence Center in Stockstadt, he has been advancing the Group’s Russian activities since 2012.

“Strong economic ties connect Russia to Western Europe, especially to Germany. And while the political situation is threat-ening to escalate owing to the incidents in Ukraine, there are almost no repercus-sions to be felt on transport business. Militzer & Münch’s projects, too, are run-ning steady. Politicians’ diplomatic skills will decide on the continued existence of the trade relations. Preserving the trust that has been built is now imperative.”

hether in terms of manpower, vehicle fleet or loca-tions: Trasko continues on a growth curve. In the past two years alone, five new branch offices were added, the truck fleet was increased from 120 to over 260, and the staff was doubled and now counts about 750 persons.

At the 14 locations in Russia, Trasko employs experts with long years of experience. For Managing Director Eugene Shaka-lida, they are one of the company’s strengths: “We know the requirements of our customers, the conditions of the Russian market, and of course we speak the language. In combination with our own, state-of-the-art fleet, this is a real competitive edge.“

Trasko: Experien ced experts Militzer & Münch daughter company OOO Trasko celebrates its 20-year anniversary next year: The company started operating in 1995 in Moscow and has developed beautifully since.

Everything from one stopThe focus of Trasko’s ac-tivities is on national and international road haulage. Whereby Trasko is flexible in meeting the custom-ers’ needs: The service range includes groupage, part load and full load transports, with services such as customs clearance, insurance or warehousing available on request. “We offer customized services, and everything from one source”, says Eugene Shakalida.

Apart from transport from Europe, for some time now shipments from China to Russia have come to be in high demand. Trasko has developed a suitable solution: Contrary to most other logistics compa-nies, Trasko offers also groupage road services

instead of only full truck loads. The new service scores with its short transit times: Shipments from China reach any destina-tion in Siberia down to the Urals in 15 to 20 days, whereas sea freight will take several months.

For the transports to run as efficiently as pos-sible, Trasko collaborates closely with a Chinese partner who delivers the goods – mainly equipment and spare parts, but also chemical and electronic products – to the border. Here, Trasko as a licensed customs carrier does the customs clearance and takes over the on-forward-ing via company-owned trucks.

Trasko: Experien ced experts

In the preparatory stage of the big event, Trasko’s St. Petersburg branch organized the transport of parts for ski lifts and snow-making equipment to Krasnaya Polyana and Gornaya Karusel near Sochi. A challenging project – es-pecially in view of the tight time frame and the huge volume. In France, Italy, and Austria, Trasko picked up the cargo – total weight: over 3,000 tons - and transported all the goods to their destination within four months. It took 190 truck trips.

ZAO Militzer & Münch, too, handled transports for the Olympic Games. The Moscow team delivered parts for sewage treatment plants from Germany and Italy and also high tech equipment for the Olympic Media Center to the Black Sea: monitors, cameras, and cables from Japan for a Japanese TV station and even a complete studio for a Russian TV station. In the course of almost two years, Militzer & Münch Russia successfully handled circa 1,000 truckloads.

By air, the mail reaches Yekaterinburg airport, where it is imme-diately picked up by per-sonnel from the branch office - sometimes also in the middle of the night. As Maxim Ignatov puts it: “If a plane lands late, we are at the ready. Af-ter all, there must be no delays!” The team loads the express freight onto a truck, gets it cleared with customs and transports it to Moscow, a distance of about 1,800 kilometers.

Trasko’s formula for suc-cess: Designing the best possible solution for each customer in-dividually. “We began as a five-man team and made our mark as a reli-able freight carrier”, says Eugene Shakalida. “We want to fortify our strong market position and de-velop it further, adding manpower, branches, and products.“

Militzer & Münch in Dubai

AIMING HIGH

In Dubai, the sky scraper studded metropolis, the building boom seems to know no boundaries. Artificial island worlds, a swimming building in the form of an ice berg, houses that look like wasps nests – archi-tecture’s most creative ideas are often realized here. Dubai, the biggest city of the United Arab

Emirates, is in no way inferior to Abu Dhabi, the UAE capital.

Dubai’s growing economy has long ceased depend-ing on oil alone: In 2013, the volume of non-oil related foreign trade reached circa 362 billion US dollars – an increase of eight percent as com-pared to the previous year.

Logistics Hub between East and WestAmid white beaches and modern shopping centers, logistics plays a

The total change came with the oil: In the mid-20th century, the United Arab Emirates experienced the onset of an economic boom that was to lead the country towards a new future. In 2007, Militzer & Münch established its own unit in UAE, which recently expanded its portfolio and now offers, apart from air and sea freight, also cross-border road transports.

Dubai – City of Superlatives

Whether the world’s high-est building or the biggest indoor snow park - Dubai breaks world records:

Burj Khalifa, measuring 828 meters, is the world’s tallest skyscraper. With over 160 floors, it houses a luxury hotel, offices, suites, and a viewing platform.

With a world record, Dubai started into the year 2014: The city’s New Year pyrotech-nic display along a 95-kilo-meter stretch of coastline boasted 480,000 fireworks. 40° C outdoors, snow inside: The indoor ski resort Ski Dubai is the world’s largest indoor snow park and offers five ski pistes, among them the world’s first indoor black piste.

major role: Owing to its geographical situation and the well-developed infra-structure, Dubai is the most important hub for air and sea freight between Europe, Africa, and Asia, and is regarded as the gateway to Iran.

“The United Arab Emirates are, per se, first and fore-most an import market”, says Yogi Barot, Manag-ing Director M&M Militzer & Münch LLC. From the Far East, furniture and cosmetics are imported, from Japan: automobiles, from the USA and Europe, among others, equipment and products for the oil and energy production.

“This is also mirrored in the services for our customers”, he explains:

“Our main traffics are Europe-Dubai, Iran-Dubai, and Far East-Dubai.”

In Dubai, Militzer & Münch operates an office and a transit warehouse. A staff of twelve organ-izes world-wide trans-ports – plans are to add another three colleagues to the team by the end of this year.

Sea freight volume: doubledOutside the UAE, the Mil-itzer & Münch Dubai team supports other Militzer & Münch units with projects going to neighboring countries such as Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bah-rain, and Kuwait. “Here, we cooperate mainly with

our colleagues in Ger-many, France, Italy, China, Iran, and Kazakhstan”; says Yogi Barot.

Militzer & Münch Dubai is developing and growing. The sea freight volume doubled in the course of one year, from 2012 to 2013, the turnover in-creased by 45 %. Recently, trans- border road trans-ports were added to the service portfolio: Militzer & Münch cross-stuffs the goods – often from France, Great Britain or China – at Dubai’s Jebel Ali Airport and on-forwards them – most of the time in reefers - to Saudi Arabia.

“In the past few years, our young team has worked hard to establish Militzer & Münch as a brand in the United Arab Emir-ates”, says Yogi Barot.

“The increase in volume and in man power, as well as the positive feedback from our customers, show that we are on the right track.”

A federation of seven emirates

Seven emirates make up the United Arab Emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ra’s al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. Six of them got together in 1971, the seventh followed one year later. The federation boasts the seventh largest crude oil reserves world-wide, the per capita income equals that of many West European countries. The majority of the inhabitants live in Abu Dhabi and Dubai – but natives are in the minority: Around 80 % of the inhabitants are foreigners.

CargoLine and Militzer & Münch:

GETTING THINGS GOING – TOGETHERFive years ago, Militzer & Münch and the German groupage cooperation CargoLine started cooperating. Now, both network systems are taking positive stock: Customers benefit from the better international network – the volume of shipments has kept increasing constantly.

From its his-tory, the groupage coop-eration CargoLine is well positioned in Western Europe, and especially in Germany. Militzer & Münch complements this network perfectly – as the

Militzer & Münch Group is at home in Eastern Europe as much as in North Africa or Central Asia. “With Militzer & Münch, we have become stronger interna-tionally”, says CargoLine’s Managing Director Jörn Peter Struck. “Now, we do transports to regions that before we could not cover.”

For Militzer & Münch, too, the partnership was the

right step: “We wanted to offer our customers real additional value – and we succeeded”, says Alexei Kovalenko, CEO of Militzer & Münch. “CargoLine opens new possibilities in the West European markets, for us and for our customers.”

Growth target: reachedThe development of the shipment volume proves that customers appreciate

the cooperation of Militzer & Münch and CargoLine: Both the pick-up orders coming from the Militzer & Münch network and the distribution orders from the CargoLine coopera-tion increased every year in the two-digit percentage range. In 2013, Militzer & Münch recorded a rise by more than 27 percent in transports from the Militzer & Münch network as com-pared to the 2012 figures;

with shipments from the CargoLine network, the growth rate was at over 17 percent.

The art of bundling The international goods flows are bundled in Eichenzell near Fulda, Hessen. Here, the Cen-tral and the Europa Hubs serve as a link between the networks. Transports from/to Bulgaria, Romania and to the Baltic States are routed directly to the CargoLine Europa Hub. All other destinations, such as the CIS countries and North Africa, are served via the Militzer & Münch Gate (cf. also the info box on page 19). The only exception: Ship-ments to Greece are con-solidated at the Gates in Hannover or Kempten. “Shipments should not be traveling like tourists – we reduce this to a mini-mum”, says Simon Fundel, Manager Road Logistics at Militzer & Münch. “Our IT systems allow intelli-gent control of the traffics

and avoid superfluous kilometers. In certain cases, it simply makes sense to bundle goods not at the Hub or Gate, but directly at the ship-ping depot.” Apart from fixed departures from the Hub or Gate, Militzer & Münch also executes nu-merous direct transports with CargoLine partners in Germany and abroad.

Knowing what’s on the road Militzer & Münch’s top five lanes are Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Lat-via and Lithuania. The Group offers end-to-end information flow for the goods transport to these destinations. “For their shipments, the custom-ers receive status reports just like the ones they know, say, from Ger-many”, explains Simon Fundel. “Integral part of our standard service is also the digital proof of delivery, which the cus-tomer can access online on demand.”

Getting better and betterMore lanes and an in-crease in shipments - CargoLine and Militzer & Münch are not going to rest on their laurels. Apart from creating new products, like for instance ThermoLine, the transport solution for goods sensitive to cold, increasing customer benefit is another target the groupage coopera-tion is constantly working on. Thus, CargoLine and associated partners are putting to the test all their processes again and again, procedures are be-ing continually improved and standardized, IT solutions are being en-hanced innovatively. “We see CargoLine at the top of SME cooperations”, says Alexei Kovalenko. “Quality and service are CargoLine’s utmost pri-orities. For us, a perfect match!”

A tight network

Machine parts from Germany to Azerbaijan, cotton from Tajikistan to Tunisia – for CargoLine, Militzer & Münch regularly handles transports to twenty countries. Among the countries of destination are in

North Africa: Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia

Asia: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan

Europe: Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus

CargoLine – the groupage network

CargoLine, the cooperation regis-tered in Frankfurt/Main, has been performing, for over 20 years now, system groupage transports – in Germany as well as on the inter-national stage. Additional focuses are distribution, procurement, and contract logistics. CargoLine was founded in 1993 by seven companies; today, 45 mid-sized system partners in Germany form a network that is complemented by high-performing international partners.

In 2013, CargoLine transported over 11.8 million shipments; with a staff of approximately 7,200, the cooperation generated a turnover of more than 1.4 billion Euros.

CargoLine is certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001 (including the HACCP concept and logistics services), and complies with the environment norms DIN EN ISO 14001, 14064 (CO2 footprint) as well as DIN EN 16258.

Moreover, CargoLine is a mem-ber of s.a.f.e., the Association for the Protection and Enhancement of Safety in Forwarding.
